Buon compleanno Simon Hinkler!
E’ probabilmente tra i più grandi chitarristi di goth rock del mondo e il suo stile inconfondibile ha segnato i successi dei The Mission. Simon Thomas Hinkler nasce a Sheffield (UK) il 13 novembre 1959 segno zodiacale Scorpione. Oltre ad essere un chitarrista di gran talento è anche un eccellente tastierista, compositore e produttore. Forma la sua prima band, Tv Product, nel 1978 insieme al coinquilino Tony Perrin e a tre amici che ha conosciuto frequentando il Politecnico della sua città natale. Dopo qualche tempo Simon lascia la band per unirsi agli Artery in veste di keyboard player. Nel 1982 entra a far parte dei Pulp, produce il loro primo album It dove suona la chitarra il mandolino, il basso e il pianoforte. Inoltre co-scrive il singolo di debutto che si intitola My Lighthouse. Successivamente rientra negli Artery per un breve periodo di tempo insieme a suo fratello David anche lui inizialmente con i Pulp.

L’arrivo nei The Mission

Ai The Mission si unisce nel 1986 e dopo averli lasciati nel 1990 rientra definitivamente nella band nell’Ottobre 2011. Con il suo fascino inconsapevole e sfrontato, l’aria irriverente, la sigaretta fra le labbra e il cappello nero ha incarnato alla perfezione l’immagine del gothic rock. Parliamo di quel mixture di dark, psichedelia e mistero che ha incantato un’intera generazione e che influenza ancora la musica dei nostri giorni. Schivo, riservato, originale e anti-divo per eccellenza Simon insofferente alle regole dello showbiz mal sopporta l’ondata di popolarità che investe i The Mission dopo l’uscita di God’s Own Medicine dell’86 e di Children dell’88 e decide di mollare tutto e di trasferirsi negli Stati Uniti. Lì resterà a vivere fino al 2009 anno del suo ritorno in patria.

Nel frattempo si mette a lavorare nel suo studio privato all’album A Room Full Of This insieme a Mark Gouldthrope (originariamente vocalist degli Artery) sotto il nome di The Wing Commander che uscirà sul mercato nel 1992. Questo è il secondo lavoro della coppia Hinkler-Gouldthrope. Il primo intitolato Solitude And The Snake fu registrato poco prima che Simon entrasse a far parte dei The Mission e di conseguenza il progetto The Wing Commander fu messo in stand-by.
Il suo primo solo album risale al 2005 e si intitola Lose the Faith, un lavoro ispirato, accurato, intelligente, onesto, che contiene tra gli altri Drop in the Ocean, un brano sincero e pieno di poesia.

Un chitarrista e songwriter d’eccellenza

Nei suoi anni con i The Mission Simon ha suonato la chitarra, le tastiere e scritto e co -scritto molte delle canzoni più belle e più rappresentative della band. Sono sue anche l’avvincente ballad Can’t see the ocean from the Rain e Another Fall from Grace che da il titolo al più recente cd dei The Mission del 2016.
Sicuramente i The Mission non sarebbero stati quelli che sono stati e che sono senza di lui. Ma a Simon, che fa da sempre il suo lavoro con precisione, rigore e professionalità, non fanno certo difetto due virtù tipiche dei grandi. Parliamo di modestia e umiltà.

Anticonformista, imprevedibile, zingaro per natura e vocazione nel corso della vita. Anzi nel corso delle sue vite. Quella passata a suonare sui palcoscenici di tutto il mondo acclamato dai fans e quella vissuta in solitaria nel deserto del nuovo Mexico. Alla ricerca di se stesso e di ciò che contasse davvero per lui lontano dai riflettori. Simon ha vinto e perso ma sempre con stile e con integrità e non ha mai tradito il suo talento alla ricerca del successo facile, né i suoi principi, né è mai venuto meno ai suoi ideali che lo hanno portato a spingersi lontano lontano fino alle colonne d’Ercole.

Ama scrivere e sulla sua pagina fb, durante i tour dei The Mission, tiene rigorosamente un diario di bordo nel quale racconta con stile fluido, accattivante e brillante avventure e disavventure on the road. Tutto questo presto potrebbe diventare un libro.

He is probably among the greatest goth rock guitarists in the world and his unmistakable style marked many hits of The Mission. Simon Thomas Hinkler was born in Sheffield (UK) on 13 November 1959 star sign Scorpio. Besides being a very talented guitarist he is also an excellent keyboardist, composer and producer. He formed his first band TV Product in 1978 together with his roommate Tony Perrin and three friends he met while attending the Polytechnic of his hometown. After some time Simon leaves the band to join Artery as a keyboard player. In 1982 he joins Pulp, produces It their first album in which he plays guitar, mandolin, bass and piano and co-write their debut single My Lighthouse. He subsequently rejoins Artery for a short period of time together with his brother David initially with Pulp too.

Simon joins The Mission

He joins The Mission in 1986 and after leaving them in 1990 he definitively reinited with the band in October 2011. With his unaware and wild charm, irreverent air, a cigarette pressed between his lips and a black hat he perfectly embodies the image of gothic rock, that mixture of dark, psychedelia and mystery that enchanted a whole generation and still influences music today. A free soul,reserved, original and antistar par excellence, Simon, intolerant of showbiz’s rules, can’t stand the wave of popularity that hits The Mission after the release of God’s Own Medicine in ’86 and Children in ’88 and decides to give up everything and to move to the United States where he will stay until 2009, the year of his return to his homeland.

In the meantime he started working in his private studio on the album A Room Full Of This together with Mark Gouldthrope (originally vocalist of Artery) under the name of The Wing Commander. The album would be released in 1992. This is the second work of the Hinkler and-Gouldthrope together. The first, Solitude and the Snake, was recorded shortly before Simon joined The Mission. And as a result The Wing Commander project was put on hold.
His first solo album dates back to 2005 and is titled Lose the Faith. It’s an inspired, accurate, intelligent, honest work. It contains among others Drop in the Ocean, a sincere and poetic song. In his years with the Mission Simon played the guitar, keyboards and wrote and co-wrote many of the band’s best and most representative songs, including the rousing ballad Can’t see the ocean from the Rain and Another Fall from Grace which gives the title to The Mission’s most recent 2016 cd.

A top guitarist and songwriter

Surely the Mission would not have been what they were and are without him but Simon. He has always done his job with precision, rigor and professionalism, certainly does not lack two typical virtues of great artists: modesty and humility.

Non conformist, unpredictable, a gypsy by nature and vocation throughout his life, or rather throughout his two lives. The one he spent playing on stages all over the world, acclaimed by fans and the one he lived on his own in the desert of New Mexico in search of himself and what really mattered to him away from the spotlight. Simon won and lost but always with style and integrity and never betrayed his talent in search of easy success, nor his principles, nor did he ever fail to fulfil his ideals that led him to go far, far away to the Pillars of Hercules.

He loves writing and on his facebook page during The Mission’s tours he rigorously keeps a diary. In this diary he recounts adventures and misadventures on the road in a fluid, captivating and brilliant style and that will soon be collected a book.
