E’ un periodo molto positivo questo per Marcelo Paganini, il virtuoso della chitarra rock. Il musicista originario di Belo Horizonte in Brasile, infatti, ha tenuto di recente una serie di apparizioni live in giro per il mondo che hanno ottenuto grandi consensi. Compositore, multistrumentista, arrangiatore, midi programmer e sound engineer. Paganini si è fatto conoscere ed apprezzare negli anni per il suo gusto raffinato per l’improvvisazione applicata ad una grande varietà di stili musicali. Dalla musica classica, al progressive rock, dal rock al reggae all’acid jazz e al flamenco, Marcelo si è costruito una lusinghiera reputazione. Merito anche delle sue ottime produzioni discografiche, come “Traffic Jam” del 2012 e il più recente “Identity Crisis”, entrambi ricchi di prestigiose guest star. Intervista a Marcelo Paganini
“Identity Crisis” è il titolo del tuo più recente cd. Come loi hai scelto?
Marcelo Paganini non è il mio vero nome, la gente ha iniziato a chiamarmi così nel 1979. Anche se vado pazzo per l’Italia, non sono italiano. Sono metà francese e metà brasiliano e sono nato a Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Quindi non ho parentele con Paganini anche se mi piacerebbe molto…In giro per il mondo comunque ci sono tanti “veri” Marcelo Paganini ma io non sono uno di loro. Difatti io sono il reale “fake” di Marcelo Paganini, quindi la maggior parte dei links quando cerchi in rete riguardano me…Comunque sono un grandissimo fan della musica di Niccolò Paganini. Portarsi avanti questo nome, nel mio caso, come musicista è diventato sempre più difficile. Generava infatti delle alte aspettative. Quando mi sono trasferito a New York all’inizio degli anni ’90 intravidi la possibilità di cambiare il mio nome da palcoscenico. Ma poi la mia canzone “Blues de ninguem” che registrai suonando le keyboards nella band rock brasiliana Kamikaze divenne una hit per anni. Rimase al numero uno della radio locale di Belo Horizonte per più di un anno… Così più ho cercato di prendere le distanze da Paganini più ne rimanevo “incollato”. Così ho cercato di essere il musicista migliore che potevo per fare giustizia al nome di Paganini. Per tornare al titolo dell’album, “Identity Crisis” rappresenta la situazione di un musicista franco-brasiliano che viene da New York ed ha uno studio di registrazione in Catalonia…
Gli esordi di Marcelo Paganini
Tu sei conosciuto come virtuoso della chitarra. Quando hai deciso che questo era lo strumento che intendevi imparare a suonare?
Quando ho iniziato a suonare era il 1974, avevo 9 anni ed ero un cantante. Un anno dopo mi sono ritrovato a cantare di fronte ad un’enorme audience. Era il luglio del 1975 durante un grande festival musicale nella mia città originaria in Brasile…Li vidi la rock band brasiliana Os Mutantes per la prima volta. Rimasi affascinato da Sergio Dias, il chitarrista della band, che incontrai successivamente nel backstage. Quindi ebbi la mia prima chitarra e non mi sono mai guardato indietro anche se poi mi sono innamorato anche di altri strumenti.
Qual è il tuo brano preferito di “Identity Crisis” e perché?
“Bacteria” perché è la migliore canzone che abbia mai scritto finora. Ci ho messo quasi cinque anni a completare tutto l’album, praticamente il 10% della mia vita. E “Bacteria” è stata la parte più lunga. Sono riuscito a raccontare la favola della creazione dell’Universo, pieno dappertutto di batteri contenenti parole e musica. Ho cercato di fare qualcosa che non fosse diversa soltanto dal lavoro degli altri ma che fosse diversa anche dai miei precedenti lavori. Ho cambiato l’accordatura della mia chitarra in modo che non potrai ripetere niente di quello che avevo suonato prima, ho dovuto imparare tutto di nuovo…
Le guest famose di “Identity Crisis”
Billy Sherwood, Adam Holzman, Marc Madore e Chad Wackerman sono tra le guest di “Identity Crisis”. Come li hai scelti e come sei riuscito a coinvolgerli in questa tua nuova avventura musicale?
Quando cammini nella giusta direzione è come se l’intero Universo cospirasse per farti raggiungere i tuoi obiettivi…Poi incontri le persone giuste. Scegli gli artisti che ammiri di più e loro suoneranno quello che è più giusto per ogni brano. Marc Madore suona il basso nella mia band dal 1996, lui è un tipo dal grande talento e generosità. Non sarei mai arrivato tanto lontano senza di lui, questo è sicuro. Lui ha scritto tutte le partiture dei miei pezzi e devo dire che anche questo è stato un grande cambiamento.
L’incontro e l’amicizia con Billy Sherwood
Billy Sherwood degli Yes ha registrato le parti di basso nel mio primo album e mi ha aiutato a convincere Tony Kaye ad unirsi a noi con il suo organo Hammond nel brano “Somewhere somehow”. Ci siamo incontrati per la prima volta allo show del NAMM vicino Los Angeles e più tardi nel 2015 siamo salpati insieme per Cruise to the Edge. Così era arrivato proprio il momento di incidere un album insieme. Lui canta la maggior parte delle vocals nell’intero cd e il basso in un pezzo. Ho incontrato Lenny White della Miles David Band e Return to Forever a Parigi. Lui è stato talmente magnifico da voler registrare la batteria per ben due pezzi. Ho incontrato Adam Holzman, che lui della band di Miles David e più recentemente della band di Steve Wilson allo stesso show del NAMM. L’energia era straripante, lui ha registrato le keyboards su quattro pezzi su sei dell’album. Adam si è messo in contatto con Chad Wackerman (della band di Frank Zappa e Allan Holdsworth) ed ha registrato la batteria su tre canzoni…E poi quando tutto era pronto, Rachel Flowers si è unita al progetto con le sue vocals, le keyboards e la chitarra. Incredibile!!! Ho ascoltato questo album ogni singolo giorno per essere sicuro che davvero lo avessi realizzato. Sono la persona più fortunata che sia mai esistita, grazie Universo!
I recenti show in Europa e Sud America
Come sono andate le cose on the road in Spagna e Brasile durante i tuoi spettacoli estivi e quali sono state le reazioni dell’audience?
Sono stato in Catalonia, Spagna per finire il mio album e quattro anni dopo mi ritrovo ancora in Catalonia oppure a cercare un modo per ritornarci prima possibile. Ho tenuto uno show in una bellissima città li vicino chiamata Osor, vicino Girona e la reazione del pubblico è stata incredibile, pura maiga… Non mi aspettavo un benvenuto tanto caloroso per la mia canzone “Tangerine Way”. Non l’avevano mai sentita prima. La Catalonia è per sempre nel mio cuore…
Poi lo scorso giugno ho tenuto il mio terzo tour in Brasile dal 2014. Sei prove, due città (Rio de Janeiro e Belo Horizonte), due band diverse e tre settimane di lavoro. Dici che sono stato impegnato? Ho postato su internet 10 video del primo spettacolo all’Audio Rebel di Rio. Durasnte l’ultimo show nella mia città natale Belo Horizonte abbiamo avuto una doppia standing ovation…
E’ stato molto emozionante suonare di fronte alla famiglia, asgli amici, ai fans del Conservatorio, dove ho suonato per la prima volta 40 anni fa.
I futuri progetti di Marcelo Paganini
Quali sono i tuoi nuovi progetti e a cosa stai lavorando in questo periodo?
A breve comincerò ad editare i videos dello show di Belo Horizonte per renderli disponibili ad essere fruiti in rete nelle prossime settimane. Sto pianificando di suonare almeno uno show il prossimo autunno in Europa per pubblicare “Identity Crisis” anche dall’altra parte dell’Atlantico. Ed ho molti album ai quali ho lavorato per anni che vorrei riuscire a pubblicare una volta che li ho terminati. A cominciare dalle registrazioni live di uno show a Divan du Monde a Parigi nel 1998 con una magnifica funk/rock band. Avevamo la sezione ritmica di George Moustaki e la sezione di ottoni di Khaled insieme ad altri ospiti. Questo album sarà dedicato al trombettista Christophe Dutray, che ci ha lasciato troppo presto pochi mesi fa…
The Interview
Identity Crisis is the title of your last cd. Why did you choose it?
Well, Marcelo Paganini is not my real name, people started calling me Paganini in 1979. Even if I am crazy about Italy, I am not Italian. I am French and Brazilian, being born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. So no I am not related to Paganini, I really wish I was… There are many “real” Marcelo Paganini’s around the world but I am not one of them. In fact I am the real “fake” Marcelo Paganini, but most of the links in search engines are about me…
I am just a big fan of Niccolò Paganini’s music… To carry that name as a musician after a while became harder and harder, talk about high expectations… When I moved to New York City in the early 90’s I saw it as a chance to change my stage name. But my song “Blues de ninguem” that I recorded as a guest on keyboards with Brazilian rock band Kamikaze became a hit. Number one in local radio in Belo Horizonte for over a year… So the more I try to distance myself from Paganini, the more it sticks…
The story of Marcelo Paganini
You are known as a guitarist virtuoso. When do you decide that the guitar was the instrument you really wanted to learn?
When I started in 1974 I was 9 years old and I was a singer. Then one year later I found myself singing in front of a huge crowd in July 1975 at a big music festival in my hometown in Brazil.. There I saw Brazilian rock band Os Mutantes for the first time, and became fascinated with Sergio Dias, the guitar player of the band, who I met backstage afterwards… Then I got my first guitar and never looked back, even if I fell in love with other instruments too…
What is your fav song among the ones of Identity Crisis and why?
“Bacteria” because it is the best song I wrote so far, it took me almost 5 years to complete the whole album , that is around 10% of my life. And “Bacteria” was the biggest part of it…I managed to tell the tale of the creation of a Universe filled with bacterian life everywhere with words and music that I tried to make not only different from what other people have done, but also different from my previous works as well… I changed the guitar’s tuning so I could not repeat anything I have played before, I had to relearn everything from scratch…

Billy Sherwood, Adam Holzman, Marc Madore and Chad Wackeman are among the musicians of Identity Crisis. Why did you chose them and how did you manage to involve them in your new musical adventure ?
When you walk in the right direction the whole Universe conspires to help you achieve your goals… Then you meet the right people… You choose the artists that you admire the most and they will play what is right for the songs… Marc Madore has been playing bass in my band since 1996, he is such a talented and generous guy. I would never came that far without him, that is for sure… He also wrote all the scores for my songs, that alone was a game changer…
The friendship with Billy Sherwood
Billy Sherwood has recorded bass on my first album and helped me convince Tony Kaye to join us on Hammond organ on the song “Somewhere somehow”. We first met at the NAMM show near Los Angeles, and later we sailed together on Cruise to the Edge 2015. So it was time to record a whole album together: he sang most of the vocals in the whole album and recorded bass in one song. I met Lenny White, from Miles Davis Band, and Return to Forever in Paris, and he was wonderful enough to record drums in two songs. I also met Adam Holzman, also from Miles Davis band, and more recently Steve Wilson’s band at the same NAMM show. The energy was high, he recorded keys on 4 songs out of the 6 songs in the album. Adam got me in touch with Chad Wackerman, from Frank Zappa and Allan Holdsworht bands and he recorded drums in 3 songs… And when everything was almost done, Rachel Flowers joined the project at the 11th hour on vocals, keys and guitar. Incredible!!! I listen to this album every single day to make sure it really happened, I am the luckiest guy who ever lived, thanks Universe!!!
The recent shows in Europe and South America
Did you enjoy being on the road in Spain and Brasil during the summer and how was the reacion of the audience?
I went to Catalonia in Spain to finish my album and 4 years later I am still either in Catalonia or looking for a way to go back there as soon as I can. I did a show in a small wonderful town there called Osor, near Girona and the reception of the public was incredible, pure magic… I was not expecting such a warm reception to my song “Tangerine way” they never heard before… Catalonia forever in my heart…
Then last June I did my third Brazil tour since 2014, with 6 rehearsals, two cities (Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte), two different bands and three weeks. Did you say busy? I posted in the Internet 10 videos of the first show at Audio Rebel in Rio de Janeiro. On the last show in my hometown Belo Horizonte we had a double standing ovation… It was very emotional to play for my family, friends and fans at the Conservatorio’s theater, where I first played more than 40 years ago…
The future projects
What are your new projects? What are your working on at present?
Right now I will start to edit the videos of the show in Belo Horizonte to make them available on the Internet in the coming weeks. I am planning to play at least one show in Europe next fall to release “Identity crisis” on this side of the Atlantic too. And I have many albums that I have been working on for years that I will release once I finish them. Starting with a live recording of a show at Divan du Monde in Paris way back in 1998 with a killer funk/rock band with George Moustaki’s rhythm section and Khaled’s brass section, among other guests. This album will be dedicated to the trumpet player Christophe Dutray, who left us way too soon some months ago…
