I Big Big Train riprendono la corsa verso il successo con il singolo “Oblivion”. Il pezzo anticipa il nuovo, attesissimo album della band forse più acclamata della scena new prog rock mondiale, il cui titolo è “The Likes of Us”. Per questo cd, in uscita l’1 marzo 2024, i Big Big Train capitanati dal talentoso bassista, chitarrista e multistrumentista Greg Spawton, si presentano con un line-up d’eccezione. Al fianco di Greg troviamo infatti Alberto Bravin, lead vocals, chitarra e keyboards, Nick D’Virgilio, batteria, percussioni, vocals e chitarra acustica a 12 corde. Quindi Dave Foster alle chitarre, Oskar Holldorff alle keyboards e vocals, Rikard Sjöblom alle chitarre, keyboards e vocals e Claire Lindley, violino. Grandi sono le aspettative intorno a “The Likes of Us”, prima collaborazione dei BBT con la prestigiosa etichetta tedesca InsideOut. Questo è un periodo d’oro per la formazione, reduce da una serie di concerti molto acclamati tenutisi la scorsa estate. Intervista a Greg Spawton dei Big Big Train
Questo è il primo cd che i Big Big Train realizzano con l’etichetta InsideOut e rappresenta quindi un grande passo avanti per la carriera della band. Avete per questo sentito qualche tipo di pressione mentre stavate componendo i pezzi?
Si’, ci siamo sentiti addosso tanta pressione. Sapevamo che questo molto probabilmente è l’album più importante della nostra carriera. E’ il primo che realizziamo su una major label ed è anche il primo da quando abbiamo perso David. Così sappiamo che la posta in gioco è molto alta per noi. Abbiamo cercato di rendere questo album il migliore che abbiamo mai fatto. Abbiamo lavorato molto sodo sulla scrittura dei pezzi, scegliendo le canzoni migliori ed assicurandoci di presentare un disco coeso. Volevamo proporre quel tipo di album che l’ascoltatore mette su con la prima canzone e si lascia trasportare finendo per ascoltarlo tutto.
Il cd è stato registrato agli Urban Recording Studios a Trieste. Che ricordi hai riguardo il lavoro in quello studio e in generale riguardo l’atmosfera di quel periodo?
Dato che questo era un nuovo inizio per noi, abbiamo voluto fare qualcosa di differente. In questo periodo la maggior parte delle band (incluso noi) tendono a registrare da remoto. Spesso lo si fa a casa e poi i vari pezzi dell’album vengono messi insieme nel processo di mixaggio. Ma noi volevamo fare quest’album alla vecchia maniera. Tutti insieme a suonare nella stessa stanza nello stesso tempo. Così abbiamo scelto uno studio con una grande stanza per registrare, con grandi microfoni e un’ottima acustica. Gli Urban Studios sono al centro di Trieste. Così potevamo lavorare sodo, uscire magari per berci velocemente una birra e poi tornare in studio al lavoro. E’ stata una meravigliosa settimana in cui abbiamo fatto musica insieme.
“The Likes of Us” album number 15
Questo è il quindicesimo album della band ma i Big Big Train danno l’impressione di essere sempre così “freschi” e di avere ancora tantissimo da dire. Come avete fatto a rimanere sempre così interessanti musicalmente ed individualmente durante tutti questi anni?
Questa domanda mi fa sentire vecchio! Dal profondo del cuore, la band è sempre stata incentrata sul songwriting. Io sono appassionato di tutto ciò che concerne la buona musica e le parole. Le band tendono ad iniziare con un exploit di creatività ma quell’aspetto con il passare degli anni si affievolisce. In ogni modo, non c’è ragione per la quale debba capitare e penso che noi ora abbiamo il beneficio della saggezza. L’esperienza poi ci aiuta a vedere le cose differentemente e a mantenere alti i nostri standards. E cosa più importante, sento che abbiamo ancora molto da raggiungere. Siamo ancora “affamati” di successo e il successo per noi significa fare in modo che le nostre canzoni vengano ascoltate da più persone possibile.
Il debut single, “Oblivion”, è un brano orecchiabile e molto potente. E’ stato difficile sceglierlo tra i vari pezzi della tracklist del cd?
Avevamo due canzoni che, secondo noi, erano adatte come singoli. La prima, “Oblivion”, è un pezzo più rock mentre il secondo è una ballad. Così era come se questi due pezzi mostrassero i due aspetti contrastanti del disco, rimanendo comunque entrambi piuttosto accessibili. Il fatto è però che l’InsideOut ci aveva chiesto tre singoli! Il resto dei pezzi sono piuttosto lunghi e in pieno stile progressive rock. Così si è trattato di una scelta abbastanza difficile. Alla fine abbiamo deciso per una versione leggermente editata di uno dei pezzi prog rock come terzo singolo.

Ricordando David Longdon
“The Likes of Us” è il primo album dei Big Big Train con il cantante Alberto Bravin e senza David Longdon (tristemente venuto a mancare nel 2021). Quale è stata la tua impressione quando hai sentito Alberto cantare le nuove canzoni? Hai sentito un senso di continuità con l’ottimo lavoro che aveva svolto David?
Mi ci è voluto un bel po’ di tempo per riassestare la mia vita senza David. Anche adesso, mi sembra qualcosa di surreale. In ogni modo, io avevo stretto una buona amicizia oltre che una relazione lavorativa con Alberto. Così non ero molto preoccupato riguardo a come sarebbero andate le cose. In finale Alberto è stato profondamente coinvolto. Ha composto tanto e mixato l’album con Rob Audrey, quindi si è preso parecchio lavoro sulle spalle. Per quanto riguarda le sue vocals, lui ci ha messo il cuore e l’anima per cantare le canzoni di questo album. Ci sono stati vari momenti in cui ci siamo commossi registrando le vocals del cd.
“The Likes of Us”: i dettagli tecnici
Il disco verrà pubblicato in versione limitata in Dolby Atmos mix di Bruce Soord dei Pineapple Thief. Come vi siete ritrovati a lavorare insieme a lui a questo mixaggio?
Sono un grande fan del lavoro di Bruce con i Pineapple Thief e sono venuto a sapere che lui si è fatto una grande reputazione per i suoi miraggi in Dolby Atmos. Così quando l’InsideOut mi ha suggerito Bruce, io ne sono stato incredibilmente felice. Gli ho fatto visita nel suo studio per i nostri mix ed è venuto fuori che anche Bruce è un enorme fan di Anthony Phillips. Così abbiamo passato un sacco di tempo a parlare di “The Geese and the Ghost”! (n.d.r. il primo cd solista di Anthony Phillips).
Per il nuovo cd dei Big Big Train avete rinnovato la collaborazione con l’artista visuale Sarah Louise Ewing che la realizzato la cover. Le avete dato qualche consiglio riguardo il lavoro da fare per “The Likes of Us”?
Gli album sono una combinazione di musica ed arte, quindi noi coinvolgiamo Sarah fin dall’inizio del processo creativo. Le abbiamo mandato i nostri demo e lyrics così si è potuta fare un’idea di quello che era il disco. Lei ha pensato che il tema dell’amicizia fosse la cosa più importante così ha dipinto due scene che riflettono l’aspetto dell’infanzia dei membri della band per la front cover e il libretto di illustrazioni.
Un fantastico line-up per il nuovo cd dei BBT
Il line-up per “The Likes of Us” è composta da tutti musicisti virtuosi e di talento. Parlando in particolare del batterista Nick D’Virgilio, quanto ha contribuito al songwriting dell’album?
Il lato compositivo di Nick è nel primo singolo, “Oblivion”, che ha composto insieme a Dave Foster. Poi c’è anche una sezione del brano più lungo, “Beneath The Masts”. NDV è davvero una parte importante della band per altre ragioni che vanno al di la del suo incredibile drumming e il suo lavoro nell’ambito della composizione. Lui ci aiuta ad ottenere quel grandioso vibe che abbiamo in studio e on stage.
Dopo un tour estivo che ha ottenuto un enorme successo, state pianificando nuove date per presentare il vostro nuovo album?
Le prime date saranno il prossimo marzo negli States e poi suoneremo due sets durante Cruise to the Edge. Saremo anche l’ultima band che suonerà alla Night of the Prog Festival a Lorelei in Germania. Stiamo anche pianificando ulteriori date per l’autunno e speriamo di tornare presto in Italia.
La tracklist di “The Likes of Us”
La tracklist del cd non è molto lunga e contiene 8 canzoni. Avevate molti pezzi trai quali scegliere ed è stato difficile selezionare quelli da inserire?
Essendo una prog rock band, alcuni pezzi sono piuttosto lunghi! Così l’album presenta materiale che va al di la di ciò che trovi generalmente in un album nuovo. Avevamo due ore di nuova musica tra la quale scegliere e che pensavamo avrebbe funzionato meglio, inclusa nel disco. Quindi abbiamo scritto della musica extra per poter tirare fuori alcuni dei temi e dei motivi musicali.
Qual è il tuo pezzo preferito di questo nuovo disco?
Questa è una domanda difficile perché mi piacciono tutti molto. Sono molto orgoglioso di “Beneath The Masts”. E’ stata una sfida da comporre e penso che siamo riesci a creare qualcosa di speciale con questo pezzo.
Greg Spawton racconta la storia dietro “Beneath The Masts”
Nella tracklist ci sono canzoni di diverse lunghezze e “Beneath The Masts” con più di 17 minuti è la più lunga. Ci puoi dire qualcosa di questo pezzo?
Nell’autunno del 2022 ho trascorso due mesi a Roma. Da una parte volevo godermi la città, il cibo e la storia e dall’altra stare li era come una sorta di “ritiro” musicale. Così il primo giorno a Roma mi sono recato in un negozio di strumenti musicali ed ho acquistato una chitarra a 12 corde. Ho trascorso parecchie settimane a scrivere ed arrangiare “Beneath The Masts”. Sono tornato dall’Italia con la maggior parte della musica del pezzo, quindi Alberto e NDV mi hanno aiutato a completarlo. Io ho scritto le lyrics mettendoci un paio di settimane agli inizi del 2023. Scrivere un lungo pezzo di musica non è facile. La cosa più importante per chi lo compone è assicurarsi che il viaggio che l’ascoltatore affronta per ben 17 minuti ne valga la pena. Spero di aver raggiunto questo obiettivo con “Beneath The Masts”.

Greg Spawton Interview
This is your first cd for InsideOut Music label and certainly is a big step for your career. Did you feel any pressure when you were writing the songs?
Yes, we did feel a lot of pressure. We know that this album is probably the most important one of our career. It’s the first release on a major label and it is the first release since we lost David. So, we know that the stakes are very high for us. What we have tried to do is to make this the very best album we could possibly release. We worked really hard on writing and choosing the best songs and making sure we have delivered a cohesive album. We want this to be the sort of album where the listener puts the first song on and then gets drawn in and ends up listening to the whole album.
The cd has been recorded at the Urban Recording Studios in Udine. What memories have you got about the work there and the atmosphere in that period?
As this was a new start for us, we wanted to do something different. These days, most bands (including us) tend to record remotely, often at home and then piece albums together during the mixing process. But, we wanted to do this album the old-school way: all of us, playing in a room together at the same time. So we chose a studio with a large recording room and with great microphones and acoustics. Urban studios is right in the middle of Trieste, so we could work hard and then we’d pop out for a quick beer and then get back to work. It was a wonderful week of making music together.
“The Likes of Us” cd number 15
This is the fifteenth cd from the band but Big Big Train always give the impression of being so fresh and still have so much to say. How did you manage to stay so interesting musically and individually during all these years?
This question makes me feel old! At heart, the band has always been about song-writing. I am very passionate about writing good music and words. Bands tend to start in a burst of creativity, but then that falls away over the years. However, I don’t see any reason why that has to be the case and I think we now have the benefit of wisdom and experience which helps us to see things differently and keep our standards high. Most importantly, though, I still feel we have much to achieve. We are still hungry for success and success, for us, is for our songs to be heard by as many people as possible.
The debut single, Oblivion, is a very catchy and powerful song. Was it difficult to choose it among all the tracklist of the cd?
We had two songs that, for us, would work as singles. The first one, Oblivion, is a more rocky track and the second one is a ballad. So, these two seemed to show two contrasting aspects of the album, whilst both being quite accessible. The only problem we had was that InsideOut asked for three singles! Most of the rest of the songs are quite lengthy and fully in the progressive rock style, so that was a more difficult choice. In the end, we have gone with a slightly edited version of one of the prog rock songs as the third single.
In Memory of David Longdon
The Likes of Us is also the first cd with singer Alberto Bravin and the first one without David Longdon who sadly passed away in 2021. Was were your impression when you heard him singing these new songs? Did you feel a sense of continuity with David’s excellent work?
It took me a long time to adjust to life without David. Even now, it seems unreal. However, I’d formed a close friendship and working relationship with Alberto and so I wasn’t too worried about how things would be. In the end, Alberto was hugely involved, doing a lot of the writing and mixing the album with Rob Aubrey, so he took a lot of the load from my shoulders. As for his vocals, he put his heart and soul into singing the songs on the album. There were a few tears from all of us when we recorded the vocals.
“The Likes of Us” the technical details
The cd will be out in a limited edition with a Dolby Atmos mix by Bruce Soord from Pineapple Thief. How did you come across him for this job?
I’m a big fan of Bruce’s work with Pineapple Thief and I’d become aware that he was getting a great reputation for his Dolby Atmos work. So, when InsideOut suggested Bruce, I was totally happy. I visited him in his studio to sign off the mix and it turns out he is also a huge fan of Anthony Phillips so we spent a lot of time chatting about The Geese and the Ghost!
For the new cd you renewed your collaboration with visual artist Sarah Louise Ewing for the cover. Did you give her any suggestion?
Albums are a combination of music and art, so we always involve Sarah early on in the creative process. We sent her demos and lyrics so she had a good idea of what the album was all about. She felt that the theme of friendship was the most important thing so painted two scenes which reflected aspects of the childhood of band members for the front cover and for the gatefold.
A great line-up for the album
The line up for The Likes of Us is made of all talented and virtuoso musicians. Talking in particular about drummer Nick D’Virgilio, how much did he contribute to the songwriting of The Likes of Us?
NDV’s writing features on the first single, Oblivion, which he composed with Dave Foster and also a section of the longest song, Beneath The Masts. NDV is also really important in the band for other reasons aside from his amazing drumming and his compositional work. He helps get a great vibe in the studio and on stage.

After a very successful summer tour, are you already planning new dates to present the new cd?
We have our very first dates in March in the States. Then we’re playing two sets on Cruise To The Edge. We are also going to be the final band to play the last Night of the Prog Festival at Lorelei in Germany. We are planning further dates in the autumn and we hope to be back in Italy soon.
The tracklist of the cd
The tracklist of the cd is not so long, with 8 songs. Did you have many many songs to choose from and how hard was to select them?
As we’re a prog rock band, some of those songs are quite long! So the album features well over an album of new material. We actually had about two hours of new music to choose from and we selected the songs which we thought worked best together as an album. We then wrote some extra music to bring out some of the musical themes and motifs.
What is your favourite song of the new album?
That is a hard question as I am fond of them all. I am very proud of Beneath The Masts. That was quite a challenge to compose and I think we managed to create something special with that one.
Greg tells the story behind “Beneath The Masts”
There are various length songs in the cd and Beneath The Masts is the longest one with more that 17 minutes. Can you please tell something more about it?
In the autumn of 2022, I spent two months in Rome. Whilst I wanted to enjoy the city, the food and the history I was also there as a sort of writing retreat. So, on the first day in Rome I went to a music store and bought a 12-string guitar and spent several weeks writing and arranging Beneath The Masts. I came back from Italy with most of the music and then Alberto and NDV helped me to finish it off and I wrote the lyrics over a few weeks at the beginning of 2023. Writing long pieces of music is not easy and the most important job for the songwriter is to make sure the journey that someone goes on when they listen to a long track is worth the 17 minutes of their time. I hope we have achieved that with Beneath The Masts.
