Gli RPWL celebrano il successo di Crime Scene con True Live Crime. L’acclamata prog rock band tedesca ne approfitta per regalare ai propri fans più che un assaggio di quello che è stato il Crime Scene Tour 2023. Anticipato dal singolo Another Life Beyond Control, il disco riporta le emozioni di un tour particolarmente riuscito. Durante i vari show, infatti, Yogi Lang, lead vocals, Kalle Wallner, chitarrista, Marc Turiaux batterista e Markus Grützner, bassista, hanno dato il meglio di loro stessi. Melodia, ritmo e alto livello interpretativo per i migliori pezzi tratti dal repertorio dell’amato gruppo.

Intervista a Yogi Lang degli RPWL

Crime Scene è stato un grande successo e ha confermato gli RPWL come il migliore e più popolare gruppo prog rock tedesco. Ti aspettavi un successo così clamoroso?

La sensazione che ho provato può essere meglio descritta con la parola sollievo. Il tour per l’album precedente “Tales from Outer Space” è stato fantastico, l’album in studio è andato abbastanza bene e quindi stavolta c’era un po’ di pressione riguardo l’intera produzione di Crime Scene. Vedere che l’album è stato accolto così bene è un enorme peso che mi sono tolto dal cuore.

True Live Crime come dice il titolo è un cd live. Come mai avete sentito il bisogno di registrare un album dal vivo subito dopo Crime Scene?

Dopo un concerto o una tournée la gente spesso ci chiede se c’è la possibilità di riascoltare o rivedere uno dei nostri concerti. E anche per noi registrare un tour e poterlo rivedere è mantenere una documentazione di ciò che abbiamo fatto, molto meglio che conservarlo solo nella nostra memoria!

Dove avete registrato True Live Crime?

L’album è stato registrato nel boerderij di Zoetermeer / Paesi Bassi. A differenza di altre registrazioni, questa volta non si è trattato di un concerto parte di un tour ma più di una situazione di festival. È stata una vera sfida perché in una situazione del genere possono sorgere vari problemi, ma la band ha dominato tutta la situazione e ha passato l’esame a pieni voti.

True Live Crime è il risultato del vostro spettacolo dal vivo. Ti piace ancora suonare dal vivo e stare sul palco dopo così tanti anni? Mi riferisco a te personalmente ma anche agli altri membri della band…

Dopo così tanto tempo, considero ancora un grande onore il fatto che ci siano persone a cui piace la nostra musica e che vogliono ascoltarla. Questo non diventerà mai davvero un evento quotidiano. E’ uno dei motivi per cui hai iniziato a fare musica. Ma anche la band contribuisce moltissimo: è davvero fantastico farne parte!

Il debut single Another Life Beyond Control

Perché hai scelto Another Life Beyond Control come singolo per il nuovo cd?

Per me, questa canzone ha tutto ciò che rende una canzone, un pezzo degli RPWL! E il tema domina bene tutto l’album: cosa significa la parola male? è qualcosa di astratto? fa parte di noi? Riesci a riconoscerlo? E tutto basato su un caso storico di crimine accaduto circa un secolo fa.

Pensi che gli RPWL siano più una band dal vivo o da studio?

Ogni band dovrebbe curare entrambi gli aspetti! Il mondo dello studio è abbastanza chiaro: ciò che conta è suonare bene! L’altro mondo, quello dal vivo, da vita alla registrazione. È estremamente utile lasciare che questa sensazione dal vivo fluisca nella registrazione. Siamo molto contenti che anche gli RPWL abbiano questa capacità.

La favolosa sezione ritmica di Marc Turiaux e Markus Grützner

Qual è stato il contributo che la sezione ritmica con il (nuovo) bassista Markus Grützner e il batterista Marc Turiaux ha dato a True Live Crime?

Non avevamo un bassista fisso ormai da un paio d’anni. Sebastian Harnack dei Sylvan si è unito a noi per il tour Tales From Outer Space, ma non in studio. Ora, avere una sezione ritmica così buona per le registrazioni è stato davvero stimolante!. Soprattutto durante il Crime Scene-Tour è diventato chiaro fin da subito quanto fosse eccitante sul palco.

Com’è per te come cantante lavorare con i due cantanti di sottofondo? Chi si occupa degli arrangiamenti vocali?

Ovviamente è una bella cosa non essere soli davanti al microfono sul palco. La maggior parte degli arrangiamenti per i cori provengono dalle registrazioni in studio. Caro e Carmen fanno tutto da sole, sanno da sole in con cosa si sentono maggiormente a loro agio.

Gli impegni futuri tra tour e album degli RPWL

Presto ripartirete in tour e a maggio farete anche date in Quebec. Cosa ti aspetti dal pubblico lì che è sicuramente diverso da quello europeo?

Abbiamo suonato in Canada già svariate volte ed è sempre stato fantastico Secondo me il Canada è molto europeo nei gusti, quindi non è poi così diverso. Gli Stati Uniti o il Messico,invece, sono davvero molto diversi. È comunque è molto divertente viaggiare con la band ed è un onore quando sei invitato a suonare in un posto o in un altro.

State già componendo nuove canzoni per il vostro prossimo album?

Ad essere onesti, siamo ancora impegnati con molte altre cose per la nostra etichetta e il nostro studio! .Abbiamo appena terminato di lavorare al nostro album dal vivo, incluso bluray, cd e vinile. Il prossimo in arrivo è il nuovo live dei Sylvan e l’album solista del cantante dei Sylvan Marco Glühmann. Kalle ha anche già iniziato a lavorare al nuovo album dei Blind Ego il suo side project. Sicuramente prima o poi lavoreremo su un nuovo album degli RPWL ma per ora non abbiamo ancora iniziato.

Interview to lead vocalist Yogi Lang

Crime scene was a great success and confirmed RPWL as the best and most popular German prog rock band. Did you expect such a huge success?

Maybe the feeling can best be described as relief. The tour for the previous album “Tales from Outer Space” was so great, the studio album received quite well and so there was a bit of pressure in the whole production of Crime Scene! Seeing that the album is so well received is a huge weight off our hearts

True Live Crime as the title say is a live cd. Why did you feel the need to record a live album just after Crime Scene?

It’s still the case that after concerts or a tour, people ask if there isn’t an opportunity to hear or see a concert. And also for us it is a great contemporary document to record a tour and not just keep it in our memories!

Where did you record True Live Crime?

The album was recorded in the boerderij in Zoetermeer / Netherlands. In contrast to other recordings, this time it wasn’t a solo concert but more of a festival situation. That was a real challenge because more problems can arise in such a situation, but the band mastered everything with flying colors.

The live shows from True Live Crime

True Live Crime is the result of your live show. Do you still enjoy playing live and being on stage after so many years? I mean you personally and also the other members of the band…

After so many years, I still see it as a great honor that there are people who like our music and want to hear our music. This will never really become an everyday occurrence. It’s one of the things why you started off making music. But the band also contributes a lot to it: it’s really wonderful to be part of it!

The debut single Life Beyond Control

Why did you choose Another Life Beyond control as single for the new cd?

For me, this song has everything that makes a RPWL song! And the theme covers the whole album very well: what means evil? is it something abstract? is it part of us? Can you recognize it? And all based on a historical crime case that happened about a century ago.

Do you think RPWL is more a live band or a studio one?

Every band should have both worlds within! The studio world is quite clear: simply playing well! The other world, the live world, is breathing life into the recording. It is extremely useful to let this live feeling flow into the recording. So we are very glad that the band also has this quality.

The fabulous rhythmic section by Marc Turiaux and Markus Grützner

What was the contribution the rhythm section with the (new) bass player Markus Grützner and drummer Marc Turiaux gave to True Live Crime?

We didn’t have a bass player for a couple of years now. Sebastian Harnack from Sylvan joined us for the Tales From Outer Space-Tour, but not in the studio. Now to have such a great rhythm-section for the recordings was really inspiring! Especially during the Crime Scene-Tour it became very clear how great it felt on stage!

How is it for you as the vocalist to work with the two background singers? Who comes up with the vocal arrangements?

Of course it’s great being not alone at the microphone on stage. Most of the arrangements for the backing vocals come from the studio recordings. Caro and Carmen do the whole finish themselves, they know best what they feel comfortable with.

RPWL: the future projects

You will start touring again soon and in May you also have dates in Quebec. What do you expect from the audience there that is surely different from the European one?

We’ve played in Canada a few times and it has always been really great! In my opinion it is very European there, so it is not really that different. In contrast to the USA or Mexico, wich is quite different indeed. It’s still really fun to travel with the band and it’s an honor when you’re invited.

Are you composing already new songs for your next RPWL album?

To be honest, we are still busy with lots of other things for our label and studio! We have just finished our live album, including bluray, cd and vinyl. Next coming up is the new Sylvan live album and the solo album by Sylvan singer Marco Glühmann. Kalle also has already started his new Blind Ego album. Surely we will work on a new RPWL album but we haven’t started yet!
