Ben Jones e Laurence Hobgood: due artisti che, da soli, sono riusciti a creare una musica raffinatissima e dagli alti standard qualitativi e stilistici, tutti elementi contenuti nel loro album omonimo. Un cd interamente registrato in un’enorme stanza agli studi Skywalker Sound, con una tracklist variegata e accattivante. Ben, vocale e Laurence, piano, offrono al pubblico la loro personale ed affascinante versione di brani classici, notissimi. Tra questi spiccano Nature Boy (cantata da Nat King Cole), Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (scritta da Carole King e Gerry Goffin), How Deep Is Your Love (Bee Gees) e tanti altri. In un mix di eleganza e di genuinità che accarezza le orecchie dell’ascoltatore. BACKdigit.com ha intervistato Ben Jones e Laurence Hobgood facendosi raccontare la loro storia musicale, e la creazione di questo album ricco di sfaccettature…

Intervista a Ben Jones e Laurence Hobgood

Avete registrato questo album live negli studi Skywalker Sound. Come mai avete fatto questa scelta, volevate mantenere il sound più fresco possibile?
(risponde Ben) Sia io che Laurence proveniamo da tradizioni in cui la spontaneità e la connessione umana sono un pregio. Registrare dal vivo agli Skywalker ci ha permesso di catturare la piena “conversazione tra la voce e il piano. Ogni respiro, ogni sfumatura, ogni reazione. C’è un’energia che scaturisce soltanto quando due musicisti stanno creando qualcosa in tempo reale, e noi volevamo che quello fosse il battito del cuore del nostro album.

(risponde Laurence) Gli Skywalker sono degli studi grandiosi. Stanze enormi, non ti stressi affatto per quanto sono rilassanti, almeno per me (non sono per niente agorafobico). Ritrovarsi in una stanza di quella grandezza (quasi tutti i reverb del piano sono analogici, ad esempio la stessa stanza lo è ) e la “cabina” nella quale suona Ben è più grande del garage dei miei genitori. Abbiamo lavorando con uno dei migliori ingegneri del suono del pianeta, Leslie Ann Jones. Metti su qualsiasi disco di vocal/piano e fai un paragone con il sound del nostro disco (non intendo con il modo di suonare). Noterai ciò che siamo stati capaci di catturare, ci scommetto che sentirai una grande differenza nel feeling dello spazio, “dell’aria” intorno ai suoni. E’ vero che la tecnologia digitale che è diventata molto, molto buona ma comunque non riesci a replicare al cento percento una stanza del genere.

Una tracklist interessante

La tracklist è molto interessante e comprende varie canzoni con stili differenti. Qual’è stato il pezzo più difficile da registrare e perché?
(risponde Ben) Probabilmente “Lush Life”. E’ un tale capolavoro, armonicamente completo e con varie sintonie emozionali. Mi sono dovuto trattenere per cantarla senza renderla troppo “drammatica”. Gli arrangiamenti di Laurence ti danno così tanto spazio the ogni frase ti fa sentire esposto, così ho dovuto essere completamente presente e attento in ogni riga.

(risponde Lawrence) Per la maggior parte del tempo durante le sessions del disco mi sono sentito al settimo cielo. Mi sono divertito moltissimo ritrovandomi nella circostanza ideale (e con un favoloso, bellissimo Yamaha 9” concerto Grand, magnifico da suonare. Così l’unica cosa che mi ricordo essere stata un po’ “difficile”, ma forse anche interessante, è stata il terzultimo giorno in cui stavamo lavorando al pezzo di Carole King “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?”. Leslie non era soddisfatta di come stava venendo fuori la cosa. Sentiva che non era all’altezza dello standard che ci eravamo imposti e alla fine aveva pensato addirittura che avremmo fatto bene ad eliminarla. Né io né Ben volevamo cancellarla. Quindi la sfida di Leslie è stata quella di forzarci a trovare qualcosa nel pezzo che non avevamo ancora trovato, per dimostrare che apparteneva a questo album.

Il brano più emozionante

Qual’è invece il brano che vi ha regalato più emozioni mentre lo stavate registrando?
(risponde Ben) “Ballad of the Sad Young Men”. Me la sento ancora sotto la pelle. Registrarla live agli Skywalker, con Laurence che ha forgiato ogni armonia come un respiro, è stato uno di quei momenti in cui il tempo si è fermato.

(risponde Lawrence) Per me “Nature Boy” è stata la più significativa dal punto di vista delle emozioni. Quel brano è sempre stato speciale per me (ho avuto un’esperienza semi-sensitiva una volta e “Nature Boy” era alla base di quel fenomeno. C’è stata una versione più o meno famosa agli inizi della mia carriera (scritta per un altro cantante) che è molto chiassosa ed energica. La versione di questo album ha una pazienza e una maturità che credo sia qualcosa di cui essere davvero orgogliosi. Ci vogliono anni su questo pianeta per suonare in quel modo (sto parlando anche della performance di Ben). Penso che a qualsiasi cantante che canti al suo livello di acume tecnico e con quell’abilità esecutiva ci si debba riferire come a qualcuno che “suona”.

Il sound del cd

I brani della tracklist sono stati composti da svariati artisti ma tutto nell’insieme il sound del cd risulta molto coeso. Come avete raggiunto questo risultato?
(risponde Ben) Questa coesione viene dalla fiducia e dall’avere le stese intenzioni. Laurence ed io non abbiamo iniziato a registrare pensando ad un genere, ma pensando ad una storia. Ogni brano del disco esplora qualche aspetto del desiderio, della speranza o della connessione tra esseri umani. Una volta che abbiamo trovato quella linea emozionale da percorrere, i suoi arrangiamenti e il mio approccio vocale hanno dato a tutto, in modo naturale un tono e una texture consistente.

(risponde Laurence) Beh, prima di tutto concordo con quello che dice Ben. Penso che sia anche qualcos’altro da dire riguardo l’abilità, il mestiere di realizzare un disco da un punto di vista puramente tecnico. Ad esempio tirando a lodare lo spazio agli Skywalker e il mio precedente commento. Grandioso, un suono di prima classe, consistente da un brano all’altro, unificano il progetto.

La cover del cd

Come avete scelto la cover del cd? I brani contenuti sono canzoni che avete sempre amato ed ascoltato?

(risponde Ben) Le canzoni vengono fuori da ore di conversazione riguardo i pezzi che abbiamo più amato, con i quali siamo vissuti, o che insieme abbiamo riscoperto.
Alcuni sono i nostri favoriti da una vita. Altri ci hanno sorpreso una volta che io e Laurence li abbiamo reimmaginati.
(risponde Laurence) Le session fotografiche sono state fatte da un nostro grande amico comune, Da mia Marhefka. E’ stato bello averlo li in studio per una buona parte della giornata. La foto di copertina cattura il vibe di collaborazione che abbiamo sperimentato. Signifca anche che è stato Damian che ha “catturato” quel momento.

Uno stile musicale elegante e sofisticato

Voi avete un suono sempreverde ed elegante. Pensate che sia questa la ragione del vostro successo?
(risponde Ben) Lo spero. Sono sempre stato attirato dalla musica che valorizza il gusto e la verità al di sopra dei trend del momento. Laurence porta con se la stessa sensibilità che appartiene al mondo del jazz. Se il nostro sound è senza tempo, probabilmente è perché entrambi andiamo alla ricerca dell’onestà e non di quello che di moda.

Un tour in programma

Avete in programma di presentare questo nuovo cd dal vivo?
(risponde Ben) Si’, questo è il nostro piano. Ci siamo già esibiti al Birdland a New York, 
BEN: Yes, that’s the plan! We’ve already performed concerts at Birdland in New York, all’Epiphany Center for the Arts a Chicago, al Piedmont Piano Company a Oakland, al JazzTX a San Antonio, al MFA in Houston, The USA Pavilion at the World Expo ad Osaka, al Ravinia a Chicago. Abbiamo delle date già programmate al San Jose Jazz e al Nikko di San Franciscp. Stiamo ora organizzando delle date per il 2026, sperando di espandere gli arrangiamenti e il repertorio per includere più musicisti on stage insieme a noi.

La scelta di diventare musicisti

Come avete deciso di diventare dei musicisti di professione?
(risponde Ben) Io sono cresciuto in un ambiente musicale. Entrambi i miei genitori suonavano nella Peoria Symphony e noi ragazzini avevamo in mano le corde degli strumenti prima di salire su una bicicletta. Il mio strumento era il violoncello. Ma il primo scintillio che mi ha fatto desiderare di cantare mi è venuto da Simple Pleasures di Bobby McFerrin. Ho consumato quella musicassetta per quanto l’ho ascoltata, mandandola indietro non so quante volte insieme agli amici. Ogni singola parte vocale pera per noi pura gioia.

(risponde Laurence) Io ho sempre suonato il piano. I miei genitori erano entrambi musicisti in carriera. A casa nostra ho ascoltato ogni tipo di musica. Dal country western al rock’n’roll e ovviamente la musica classica. Broadway, French Art Song, 20th century/’New Music’, Americana/Appalachian musica folk, musica asiaticac (sia tradizionale giapponese/cinese/coreana ed Indian Raga. Io ero profondamente appassionato di arti visuali, disegnare e dipingere e più avanti la calligrafia. Ma non ho mai avuto dubbi su quale direzione avrei scelto.

Gli eroi musicali di Ben Jones

Quali erano i vostri eroi musicali da teenagers?
(risponde Ben) Negli anni in cui frequentavo la High School, scoprii le grandi voci maschili di Chet Baker, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Steve Perry, Robert Plant. Cantavo sui loro pezzi nella mia camera da letto molto prima di salire sul palcoscenico. La musica teatrale è stata la mia porta d’ingresso per esibirmi davanti al pubblico. Come molti altri ragazzi, venni subito arruolato perché uno show aveva bisogno di persone che ci partecipassero. Interpretare le lyrics in modo teatrale divenne la mia seconda natura molto presto. Ricordo anche di essere stato accompagnato a vedere dei concerti al Peoria Civic Centre. Les Misérables, Bobby McFerrin, Elton John, anche Bill Cosby e li realizai come doveva essere stare a capo di una performance live. Quel senso di connessione è ciò che mi guida ancora oggi.

E quelli di Laurence Hobgood

(risponde Laurence) I miei anni da teenager videro la transizione dall’essere uno dal palato eclettico a quella che credo sia inevitabilmente e necessariamente la gestazione di un musicista jazz pienamente credibile. Ero totalmente focalizzato sulla musica jazz, e la cosa durò per un periodo abbastanza appropriato. Fu quando avevo tra i 20 e i 30 anni. Poi si espanse di nuovo verso l’esterno per abbracciare tutti gli altri bellissimi tipi di musica che avevo amato da ragazzino. Così divenni un ascoltatore abituale dei Chicago, Tower of Power, Yes, Styx, Elton John, Genesis, Kansas, Stevie Wonder e gli Earth, Wind & Fire. Poi anche Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Miles & Trane. Anche Chick’s Return To Forever e i Weather Report entrarono a far parte dei miei interessi.

Progetti per il futuro

C’è qualche artista con il quale tu e Laurence vorreste collaborare?
(risponde Laurence) Per prima cosa, come ha detto prima Ben, noi speriamo di avere l’opzione per poter includere basso e batteria per alcune performance selezionate. Ci sono cosí tanti incredibili musicisti che mi piacerebbe coinvolgere per avere una “completa sezione ritmica”. Sono troppi da nominare. Ma al di la di questo, e parlando al di fuori del jazz, mi piacerebbe interagire con Yo-Yo Ma, Allison Krause, Stevie, sarebbe favoloso. C’è un bravissimo musicista turco che si chiama Erkan Oğur. Lui ha inventato una chitarra classica fretless che è il suo marchio di fabbrica. E’ un virtuoso di kopuz e oud, un musicista con il quale amerei realizzare un progetto musicale.

Ben Jones e Laurence Hobgood: un incontro fortunato

Come vi siete incontrati e quando avete deciso di iniziare a suonare insieme?
(risponde Laurence) Ben mi ha raggiunto per una data al Birdland che voleva fare ma il suo MD di lunga data (per i suoi altri eccellenti spettacoli) Ron Abel non era disponibile. Quindi perché non suonare come un duo? Avendolo sentito cantare, sapevo quanto fosse bravo. Ma una volta che abbiamo iniziato a lavorare insieme per sviluppare la lista delle canzoni, subito fu chiaro quante cose avessimo in comune. Prima di tutto, le canzoni stesse.

Anche se apparteniamo a due diverse generazioni, condividevamo un ventaglio di pezzi piuttosto lungo e molto eclettico. C’è anche quella che potrei definire “il fattore Midwestern”. Un modo di parlare diretto ma rilassato, con gli occhi aperti. Qualcosa tipo dimmi quello che intendi che include umiltà ed oggettività. Il che, nella mia esperienza, è molto diverso dal subdolamente diverso “profilo” della costa dove Boston/NYC e giu verso la East Coast o il vibe della West Coast di L.A./San Fran/Seattle. Noi due, invece, ragioniamo entrambi sulla stessa frequenza del Midwestern.

Interview to Ben Jones and Laurence Hobgood

You said you recorded this new album live at Skywalker Sound. Why did you choose to work in this way, to keep the sound more fresh?


BEN: Laurence and I both come from traditions that prize spontaneity and human connection. Recording live at Skywalker allowed us to capture the full conversation between voice and piano — every breath, every nuance, every reaction. There’s an energy that only happens when two musicians are creating in real time, and we wanted that to be the heartbeat of the album.

LAURENCE: Skywalker is just one of those great studios – huge room, can’t stress enough how relaxing it is, at least for me (I’m not agoraphobic at all) to be in a room that size (almost all of the reverb on the piano is analog, i.e. just the room itself) and the ‘booth’ Ben’s in is bigger than my parents’ garage. We’re working with one of the best engineers on the planet, Leslie Ann Jones. Put on just about any vocal/piano duo record and compare just the sound of it (i.e. not the playing) to what we were able to capture and I’m betting you’ll hear a big difference in the feeling of space, of air ‘around’ the sounds. It’s the room – digital technology’s gotten very, very good but it still can’t 100% replicate a room like that.

An Interesting Tracklist

The tracklist is very interesting with many songs and different styles. What was the song more difficult for you to record and why?


BEN: Probably “Lush Life.” It’s such a masterpiece — harmonically complex and emotionally layered. To sing it honestly without over-dramatizing took restraint. Laurence’s arrangement gives it so much space that every phrase feels exposed, so I had to be completely present in every bar.

LAURENCE: I was, for the most part, in heaven on this session – it was so much fun playing under these ideal circumstances (amazing, beautiful Yamaha 9’ concert grand, wonderful to play.) So the only thing I recall being ‘difficult’ – perhaps interesting? – on (I believe?) the 3rd/final day we were working on the Carole King song, ‘Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?’ Leslie was dissatisfied with what was happening – she felt it wasn’t meeting the standard we’d been setting and, finally, said she thought we should maybe just drop it. Neither Ben nor I wanted to drop it, we were into it – so her challenge forced us to find something in the song we hadn’t yet found, to prove it belonged on the record.

The most emotional track

What is instead the song that gave you more emotion when you were recording it?


BEN: “Ballad of the Sad Young Men.” It still gets under my skin. Recording it live at Skywalker–with Laurence shaping every harmony like a sigh–was one of those moments where time stopped.

LAURENCE: I think for me ‘Nature Boy’ was the most emotionally meaningful; the song’s always been very special for me (I had a bit of a semi-psychic experience once where ‘Nature Boy’ was the core of the phenomenon) and there’s a kind-of-famous version from an earlier era in my career (written for a certain other singer) that’s very rowdy/up-energy. The take on this record has a patience and maturity that I think is something to really be proud of, it takes some years on the planet to play that way (I’m talking about Ben’s performance, too – to me, any singer who’s singing with his level of technical acumen and interpretive ability deserves to be referred to as playing!).

The sound of the cd

All the songs are written from various artists but altogether the sound of the cd is very cohesive. How did you achieve this result?


BEN: That cohesion comes from trust and shared intention. Laurence and I didn’t start with genre — we started with story. Every song on the record explores some aspect of longing, hope, or human connection. Once we found that emotional through-line, his arrangements and my vocal approach naturally gave everything a consistent tone and texture.
LAURENCE: Well first & foremost – what Ben said. I think there’s also something to be said about the craft of record-making from a purely technical point of view, i.e. back to lauding the Skywalker space and my previous comment: great, world-class sound – that’s consistent from track to track – unifies a project.

La cover dell’album

How did you choose the cover for this cd? Are these songs that you always loved and play?


BEN: The songs came from hours of conversation about pieces we’ve loved, lived with, or rediscovered together. Some are lifelong favorites, others surprised us once Laurence reimagined them.
LAURENCE: The session photos were taken by a great friend of both of us, Damian Marhefka. It was great having him in the studio for a healthy portion of one day, the cover photo captured the collaborative vibe we were experiencing – and it meant even more that it was Damian who ‘caught’ that moment.

An elegant and sophisticated musical style

You have a very timeless and elegant sound. Do you think this is the reason of your success?


BEN: I hope so. I’ve always been drawn to music that values taste and truth over trend. Laurence brings that same sensibility from the jazz world. If our sound feels timeless, it’s probably because we both chase honesty rather than fashion.

Planning to tour

Are you planning to present this new cd live worldwide?


BEN: Yes, that’s the plan! We’ve already performed concerts at Birdland in New York, Epiphany Center for the Arts in Chicago, Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland, JazzTX in San Antonio, MFA in Houston, The USA Pavilion at the World Expo in Osaka, Ravinia in Chicago, and we’ve got upcoming concerts at San Jose Jazz and the Nikko in San Francisco. We’re now booking dates for 2026, and hoping to expand the arrangements and the repertoire to include more players on stage with us.

The choice to become professional musicians

How did you decide to become professional musicians?

BEN: I grew up in a musical household—both my parents played in the Peoria Symphony, and all of us kids had string instruments in our hands before we could ride bikes. Mine was the cello. But the first spark that made me want to sing came from Bobby McFerrin’s Simple Pleasures. I wore that cassette out, looping it endlessly with friends until every vocal sound felt like pure joy.
LAURENCE: Playing piano is just something I’ve always done; my parents were both career artists, in our house I heard all kinds of music, from country-western to rock & roll, of course classical. Broadway, French Art Song, 20th century/’New Music’, Americana/Appalachian folk music, asian music (both traditional Japanese/Chinese/Korean musics and Indian Raga.) I was also deeply into visual art – drawing & painting then later calligraphy – but there was never any real question what direction I’d choose.

Who were your musical heroes when you were a teenager?


BEN: Through high school I slowly discovered great male voices–Chet Baker, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Steve Perry, Robert Plant–and sang along in my bedroom long before ever stepping onstage. Musical theater was my gateway to performing in front of people; like a lot of guys, I got drafted because the show needed guys! Interpreting lyrics dramatically became second nature fast. I also remember being taken to concerts at the Peoria Civic Center–Les Misérables, Bobby McFerrin, Elton John, even Bill Cosby (😬)–and realizing how commanding a live performer could be. That sense of connection still drives me today.

LAURENCE: My teen years saw the transition from a pretty eclectic palate to what I think is both inevitable and necessary in the gestation of a fully credible jazz musician: a total focus on jazz music, lasting as is appropriate for some period of time, i.e. into my late 20s or early 30s, then expanding outward again to re-embrace all the other wonderful sounds I’d loved when I was younger. So my teen listening habits encompass Chicago, Tower of Power, Yes, Styx, Elton John, Genesis, Kansas, Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind & Fire – AND then also Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Miles & Trane. Chick’s Return To Forever and Weather Report both got on my radar when I was still a teen.

Plans for the future

Is there any artist you and Laurence Hobgood would like to collaborate?
LAURENCE: First to say – as Ben mentioned we hope to have an ‘option’ to include bass and drums on select performances and there are so many amazing players I’d love to involve in that ‘complete rhythm section’ sense, too many to name, really. But beyond that – and going outside of jazz – I’d love to interact with Yo-Yo Ma, Allison Krause, Stevie’d be amazing. There’s a Turkish master musician named Erkan Oğur – he invented a fretless classical guitar that’s his trademark (and he’s a virtuoso on kopuz and oud) that I’d LOVE to do a project with.

Ben Jones and Laurence Hobgood: a lucky meeting

How did you meet each other and decided to start to play together?


LAURENCE: Ben reached out to me about a date at Birdland that he wanted to take, but his longtime MD (for his other excellent shows) Ron Abel wasn’t available and would I be into the duo idea? Having heard him sing, that was a no-brainer. But once we started working to develop the song list the many things we have in common quickly became clear; first of all, the songs themselves – even though we’re basically a generation apart we shared a pretty extensive, and very eclectic, palette. There’s also what I might refer to as ‘the Midwestern thing’; a straight-talking BUT laid back, open-eyed, say-what-you-mean way of being that includes elements of humility and objectivity that, in my experience, is subtly different from the coastal ‘profiles’, whether Boston/NYC/D.C. and down the east coast – or the L.A./San Fran/Seattle west coast vibe. We both resonate at that Midwestern frequency.
