Intervista a Stevie Holland: il ritorno sulle scene discografiche con l’album Talk to Your Tomatoes

Il ritorno sulle scene di Stevie Holland è “targato” Talk to Your Tomatoes. Si tratta di una collezione di brani che contiene cover di famosi artisti come Joni Mitchell, James Taylor ed altri. Ma ci sono anche pezzi inediti composti da Gary William Friedman, il fidato collaboratore della raffinata interprete, nonché suo marito, artefice anche degli arrangiamenti e delle orchestrazioni. Talk to Your Tomatoes è un album interessante e ben realizzato, che vede la nota cantante jazz statunitense di nuovo sotto i riflettori. Apprezzatissima anche come interprete live in jazz clubs, cabaret rooms, teatri e locali, Stevie Holland ha pubblicato Talk to Your Tomatoes omaggiando brani che ha sempre apprezzato.

Classici del pop e brani inediti

Classici del pop e del jazz che si ascoltano sempre con piacere. Quando poi ad interpretarle è un talent del jazz e dello smooth jazz come la Holland, tutto diventa più armonioso. La cantante, nata e cresciuta in un ambiente musicale, è reduce dal successo dello scorso album Life Goes On, prodotto dal vincitore di Grammy Todd Barkan, che ha co-prodotto anche il cd di Stevie Before Love Has Gone. Così come ha ottenuto grande riscontro con il progetto teatrale musicale Platinum Dreams presentato allo York Theatre’s New2NY Series, Merton of the Movies e con Dream Mountain, un musical ispirato a Gutzon Borglum, lo scultore di Mount Rushmore.

Intervista a Stevie Holland

Parliamo del primo singolo estratto e come mai lo avete scelto?

Il nostro primo singolo pubblicato è stato “On A Clear Day”, che ho scelto perché è un brano noto, ma il nostro arrangiamento con fiati e archi e il mio approccio vocale lo portano in un territorio molto diverso da quello che credo sia stato fatto in precedenza. È così allegro e swingante che mi è sembrato il primo singolo naturale per l’album.

Le orchestrazioni dei brani di “Talk to your Tomatoes” sono molto ricche e includono orchestra d’archi, un combo di fiati e chitarra, oltre al tuo trio. Com’è stato il processo di registrazione del nuovo CD?

Volevamo una gamma di orchestrazioni ricca, completa e diversificata per l’album. Abbiamo suddiviso le sessioni in trio con fiati in una data, poi trio con archi nella seconda. Gli archi hanno sovrainciso due tracce che i fiati avevano precedentemente registrato. Il mio ruolo iniziale era quello di essere il collante per stabilire l’arrangiamento e il tono di ogni canzone per i musicisti. Una volta completate tutte le tracce strumentali, ho trascorso alcune sessioni extra sovraincidendo le voci in un ambiente più rilassato.

L’incontro con Jeff Davis

A proposito del vostro trio, hai collaborato con loro per diversi CD. Come ti sei imbattuta in loro all’inizio e avete deciso di lavorare insieme?

Il batterista Jeff Davis e io ci siamo conosciuti quando cantavo per il Re e la Regina di Norvegia nel 2005 e da allora abbiamo lavorato a molti progetti diversi nel corso degli anni. Sapevo che sarebbe stato perfetto per questo album. Questa è la prima volta che registro con il pianista Matthew Sheens.

Me l’ha segnalato un collega, e ho apprezzato molto il suo approccio innovativo e sapevo che sarebbe stato molto attento ad affrontare i suoi assoli tenendo conto di ogni specifico arrangiamento. Ole Mathisen, un sassofonista tenore che ha registrato in alcuni dei miei album, ci ha fatto conoscere Chet Doxas e ci è piaciuto subito il suo lavoro. Matt Aranoff è un bassista di cui ammiriamo il modo di suonare da anni e si è rivelato il momento giusto per questo progetto. Volevo registrare con il chitarrista Ben Monder da molti anni. Ci conoscevamo al liceo, ci siamo riavvicinati quasi vent’anni fa e finalmente era arrivato il momento!

I brani della tracklist del nuovo cd di Stevie Holland

A proposito della tracklist, il duo voce/chitarra di Round Midnight è uno dei brani più interessanti. Che ne dici di questo e della tua collaborazione con il chitarrista Ben Monder?

Sono contento che ti piaccia. Come ho detto, la mia collaborazione con Ben era attesa da tempo. In passato ho avuto produttori che non erano sicuri della nostra compatibilità stilistica. Credo che il fatto che io e Ben siamo stilisticamente così diversi sia ciò che rende questo brano così speciale. Vorrei assolutamente avere un brano nell’album che fosse solo un duo voce-chitarra, e “Round Midnight” si adatta perfettamente. La canto da anni ed è parte del mio DNA. Ben mi ha supportato senza ostacolarmi e il suo assolo è incredibilmente magico, secondo me!

“How I Feel” dal musical “The Me Nobody Knows”

“How I Feel” è tratto dal musical “The Me Nobody Knows”. Che dire dei nuovi arrangiamenti per l’album?

Mio marito Gary William Friedman è il compositore di “The Me Nobody Knows”. Ci siamo conosciuti come compositori collaboratori più di venticinque anni fa e in tutti questi anni di collaborazione non mi sono mai sentito a mio agio nell’affrontare alcun brano del repertorio del musical, per molte ragioni, a parte il fatto che il cast ha un’età compresa tra gli otto e i vent’anni. È stato Gary a suggerirmi di interpretare “How I Feel”. L’orchestrazione originale del musical di Broadway era più orientata a fiati e chitarra. Gary voleva farne una revisione completa per me, riarrangiandola con un’orchestra d’archi. Sono entusiasta del risultato. Sebbene sia ancora teatrale, credo che abbiamo creato un solido approccio sinfonico-jazz al brano.

La passione per la musica e per James Taylor

Blossom is a cover from a James Taylor song. Is he one of your favourite artists?

Sono cresciuta ascoltando James Taylor da bambina e ho sempre amato la sua musica. Questa è la mia terza cover dei suoi brani (in precedenza “Sunny Skies” e “Another Grey Morning”). Sebbene le sue interpretazioni siano in gran parte di ispirazione folk, ho sempre pensato che le sue melodie e i suoi testi poetici si prestassero facilmente a interpretazioni jazz.

Talk to your Tomatoes è la tua sesta uscita di standard e materiale originale. Pensi che pubblicherai un altro album simile a questo nel prossimo futuro?

Spero sempre di poter registrare un altro album! Ci piacerebbe concentrarci ancora di più sui fiati la prossima volta. Ho anche alcuni progetti “concept” in lavorazione. È una questione di tempistiche e, se restiamo indipendenti, di budget, LOL

Sei una delle cantautrici e cantanti jazz più acclamate del mondo. Qual è secondo te il tuo talento migliore, quello che ti ha permesso di distinguerti durante la tua brillante carriera?

È molto gentile da parte tua. Discipline così diverse, canto e scrittura. Immagino di aver cantato molto più che scrivere nella mia carriera, ma la scrittura sta iniziando a prendere il sopravvento sul mio lavoro di scrittore/paroliere teatrale, oltre alle mie canzoni pop. Il mio talento migliore, tuttavia, potrebbe essere l’esibizione. È il culmine di tutto: far sentire la propria voce, raccontare la storia attraverso i testi e farlo in modo onesto e divertente.

Un tour in arrivo

Stai già pianificando un tour dal vivo per presentare il tuo nuovo CD?

Assolutamente. Prima tappa, il mio giardino di casa a New York. Le date saranno annunciate tra un paio di settimane. Poi alcune location selezionate negli Stati Uniti. Ma spero molto, e sono entusiasta, di organizzare concerti attesi da tempo in Giappone, Europa e Scandinavia. Incrocio le dita!

Interview to Stevie Holland

Let’s talk about the first single of the CD and why did you chose it?

Our first single release was actually “On A Clear Day”, which I chose because it’s a known song, yet our arrangement with horns and strings and my vocal approach bring it into very different territory than I think previously done. It’s so upbeat and swinging that it felt like the natural first single for the album.

The orchestrations of Talk to your Tomatoes’ songs are very rich and include string orchestra, horn combo and guitar, along with your trio. How was the process of recording the new cd?

We wanted a rich, full and diverse range of orchestrations for the album. We broke the sessions up into trio with horns on one date, then trio with strings on the second. The strings overdubbed two tracks that the horns had laid down previously. My initial role was to be the glue to establishing the arrangement and the tone of each song for the musicians. Once we had all the instrumental tracks down, I spent a few extra sessions overdubbing the vocals in a more relaxed environment.

The first encounter with Jeff Davis

About your trio, you’ve been working with them for different cds. How did you come across them at the beginning and decide to work together?

Drummer Jeff Davis and I met when I was singing for the King and Queen of Norway in 2005 and have worked subsequently on many different projects through the years. I knew he’d be perfect for this album. This is my first time recording with pianist Matthew Sheens. He was brought to my attention by a colleague, and I loved his fresh take on things and knew he’d be very sensitive to approaching his solos with each specific arrangement in mind.

Ole Mathisen, a tenor sax player who’s recorded on some of my albums brough Chet Doxas to our attention, and we loved his work the moment we heard him. Matt Aranoff is a bass player whose playing we’ve admired for years and it just worked out to be the right time for this project. I have wanted to record with guitarist Ben Monder for many years. We knew each other in high school, reconnected almost twenty years ago, and it was finally time!

About the tracklist, the vocal/guitar duo on Round Midnight is one of the most interesting songs. What about it and your collaboration with guitarist Ben Monder?

Glad you enjoy it. As I mentioned, my collaboration with Ben was long overdue. I actually had producers in the past who weren’t sure about our compatibility, style-wise. I think the fact that Ben and I are strikingly different stylistically is what makes this track so special. I absolutely want to have one track on the album that would just be a vocal-guitar duo, and “Round Midnight” fit the bill. I’ve been singing it for years and it’s part of my DNA. Ben was supportive without getting in my way and his solo is hauntingly magical in my opinion!

How I Feel from The Me Nobody Knows musical

How I feel is taken from the musical The Me Nobody Knows. What about its new arrangements for the album?

My husband Gary William Friedman is the composer of The Me Nobody Knows. We were introduced as songwriting collaborators over twenty-five years ago and in all our years of collaboration, I never felt comfortable approaching any of the repertoire from the musical -for many reasons, aside from the fact that the cast age range is eight to twenty years-old. It was Gary’s suggestion that I cover “How I Feel”. The original orchestration for the Broadway musical was more horn and guitar oriented. Gary wanted to do a complete revision for me by re-arranging it with a string orchestra. I’m thrilled with how it came out. Though it’s still theatrical, I think we created a solid symphonic-jazz approach to the song.

The passion for music and James Taylor

Blossom is a cover from a James Taylor song. Is he one of your favourite artists?

I grew up listening to James Taylor as a young girl and have always loved his music. This is my third cover of his songs (previously “Sunny Skies” and “Another Grey Morning”.) Though his performances of his music are largely folk-inspired, I’ve always felt that his melodies and poetic lyrics easily lend themselves to jazz interpretations.

Talk to your Tomatoes is your sixth release of standards and original material. Do you think you will make another album similar to this in the next future?

I always hope to be able to record another album! We’d like to lean even more heavily into horns the next go-around. I also have some ‘concept’ projects percolating. It’s pretty much about timing – and if we stay independent – budget, LOL.

You are one of the most acclaimed jazz singer and songwriter. What do you think is your best talent, which allowed you to stand out during your brilliant career?

That’s very kind of you. Such different disciplines, singing and writing. I suppose I’ve done a lot more singing than writing in my career, but the writing is starting to catch up with my work as a book writer/lyricist in the theater, beyond my stand-alone pop songs. My best talent however, might be performing. That’s the culmination of everything – putting the voice out there, telling the lyrical story, and doing so in an honest and entertaining way.

A live tour coming for Stevie Holland

Are you already planning a live tour to present your new cd?

Absolutely. First stop, my backyard in New York City. Dates to be announced in a couple of weeks. Then select locations in the States. But I’m very much hoping for, and excited about setting up, long overdue performances in Japan, Europe and Scandinavia. Fingers Crossed!
