Ritornano i Destruction, la nota trash metal band, con il nuovo album Birth of Malice. La formazione tedesca formata da Marcel “Schmier” Schirmer, voce e basso, Damir Eskic chitarra, Martin Furia chitarra e Randy Black, percussioni, sulla piazza da ben quaranta anni ha ancora tanto da dire. Intervista a Martin Furia dei Destruction

Negli ultimi 40 anni i Destruction hanno cambiato formazione molte volte. Che impatto hanno avuto questi cambiamenti sulla musica della band?
Penso che abbiano avuto un certo impatto, ma d’altronde i Destruction hanno sempre avuto personalità. È normale che in 40 anni una band cambi formazione, 40 anni sono tanti, è un periodo lungo e la vita ti riserva dei colpi di scena pazzeschi!

Il vostro nuovo album si intitola Birth of Malice. (ndr: La nascita della cattiveria) A cosa si riferisce?
Penso che sia un titolo azzeccato e rifletta molto quello che sta succedendo al giorno d’oggi nel mondo. Anche se siamo capaci di creare grandi cose, c’è molto male in giro e l’umanità riesce continuamente a trovare nuovi modi per rovinare tutto invece di investire in una vita degna di essere vissuta per tutti. C’è e ci sarà sempre quello sparuto gruppetto che ha il potere, vuole tutto per sé e non intende lasciare nulla agli altri.

I riffs di Martin Furia

Come chitarrista, qual è stato il tuo contributo specifico per questo album?
Ho scritto le parti di chitarra basate su riff di basso di Schmier, proprio come Dami. Quindi ho portato un bel po’ di riff che alla fine sono diventati canzoni e ovviamente ho scritto i miei assoli. Ho anche prodotto, mixato e masterizzato l’album insieme a Schmier. Quindi è stato un grande processo integrale di cui sono molto felice di aver fatto parte.

E l’artwork della copertina? È una vostra idea o è un concept del visual artist che lo ha realizzato?
È un concept di Schmier che lui ha sviluppato insieme a Gyula Havancsák, colui ha curato la cover. Gyula tra l’altro ha già lavorato con noi per “Diabolical” tra gli altri nostri cd.

Qual è la tua traccia preferita dell’album e perché?
È difficile sceglierne una, mi piacciono davvero tutte, ma “Destruction”, “No Kings, No Masters” e “Scumbag Human Races” sono sicuramente tra le mie preferite.

Destruction on the road

Spero che i fan si divertano ad ascoltarlo tanto quanto noi ci siamo divertiti a realizzarlo! Vogliamo suonarlo in tutto il mondo. Parteciperemo ad alcuni grandi festival in Europa quest’estate, come Wacken e Summer Breeze. Quindi sarà la volta di un vero e proprio tour europeo. Ci sono anche progetti per andare ad esibirci in Asia e America Latina. Ai Destruction piace suonare in tutto il mondo e spero che questo album ci faccia suonare ovunque!

A parer tuo c’è in giro una nuova band che ha qualcosa in comune con i Destruction?
I Bütcher che vengono dal Belgio. A volte mi ricordano i Destruction! Band grandiosa!

Martin Furia Interview

During the last 40 years Destruction changed line-up many times. What was the impact of these changes on the music of the band?
I think it always a certain impact but then again Destruction has always had a personality. It’s normal that in 40 years a band changes line up, it’s a long time and life has crazy twists!

Your new album is called Birth of Malice. What does the title refers to?
I think it’s a great name and reflects a lot what is going on nowadays with the world. Eventhough we are capable of creating great things, there’s a lot of evil around and humanity manages to find new ways to fuck shit up instead of investing in a life worth living for everybody. There’s always these few that want more for themselves and less for everyone else.

Martin Furia’s riffs

As a guitarist, what was your specific contribution for this album?
I write guitar parts based on Schmier bass riffs, same as Damir. I brought quite some riff that eventually became songs and of course wrote my solos. I also produced, mixed and master the album along with Schmier, so it was a great integral process I’m very happy to have been part of.

What about the artwork of the cover? Is that your idea of is it a concept of the visual artist who realized it?
It was Schmiers concept that he developed along with cover artist Gyula Havancsák, who already worked on “Diabolical” among other previous releases.

What is your favourite track of the album and why?
It’s hard to pick one, I really like them all, but “Destruction”, “No Kings, No Masters”, “Scumbag Human Races” are certainly among my favourites.

What are your expectations on Birth of Malice?
I hope the fans enjoy it listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it! We want to play it all over the world, we have quite some great Festivals coming in Summer in Europe, like Wacken and Summer Breeze, then there will be a proper European tour and there are plans to go to Asia and Latin America. Destruction likes to play all over the world and I hope this album will make us play everywhere!

You have a very long career. Is there around, in your opinion, a new band that has got something in common with Destruction?
Bütcher from Belgium reminds me sometimes of Destruction! Great band!
