Intervista a Davey Love della rock band statunitense Death Valley Gypsies
Siamo qui oggi per parlare con Davey Love della rock band made in Usa Death Valley Gypsies. Mi è molto piaciuto quello che ho visto e sentito di The Death Valley Gypsies. Non ho mai avuto la chance di vedere la band live, ma devo dire che fate una bella impressione nei vostri videos live postati su Facebook.
Ho sentito che la vostra band ha suonato al Whiskey A GoGo. Suona come un posto emozionante nel quale suonare considerando il suo posto nella storia del Rock. Come è andata l’esibizione? Come è stato esibirsi su uno stage che ha visto susseguirsi così tanti acts famosi?
In effetti abbiamo suonato al Whiskey un paio di volte. La prima volta un po’ di anni fa con il solo ed unico Dio della chitarra Michael Schenker degli UFO, poi circa un anno dopo ci abbiamo suonato insieme agli Enuff ZNuff. Gli spettacoli sono stati sold out e abbiamo conquistato un sacco di fans, vendendo anche molta del nostro merchandising. Direi che è andata molto bene. Mi sono ritrovato a tu per tu con Michael Shenker per un po’ e, diciamo casualmente, ho infilato un paio di cartoline promozionali dei Death Valley Gypsies nella sua Cadillac!
Death Valley Gypsies: il loro line-up
Davey, puoi parlarci della band com’è ora, quali sono i membri, quando vi siete formati e dove siete di base?
Ecco il nostro line-up. Davey Love – Guitar, Vocals. Orion Morningstar – Vocals. Fernando Torres – Bass. J.V. Fowler – Percussion, Vocals. Angi Makk – Guitar, Vocals.
Ci siamo tutti incontrati dopo che io avevo messo un annuncio per cercare membri per la band. Sapevo abbastanza bene quello che stavo cercando, dovevo soltanto trovare i tipi giusti per poter mettere insieme tutti i pezzi. Ufficialmente siamo diventati i Death Valley Gypsies nell’estate del 2017.
Noi siamo di base nell’area della baia di San Francisco.
Secondo te, cosa rende i Death Valley Gypsies diversi da tutte le altre formazioni?
Penso sia il fatto che noi facciamo esattamente quello che ci piace fare. Scriviamo la nostra musica e mettiamo su uno show dal vivo cool. Siamo fans e musicisti della vecchia scuola del rock, ci piacciono i toni e gli stili vintage. Oggi ci sono in giro più tribute bands degli anni ’70 e cover band che band nuove. Questo la dice certo lunga su quanto il nostro stile sia cool!
I migliori club dove suonare
Quali sono i posti dove vi piace di più suonare, c’è una location in particolare che preferite?
Il Whiskey è forte, poi c’è Il Ritz a San Jose, CA (ci abbiamo suonato con The Lords of Altamon). Quindi Gilma Street a Berkeley, il CA è stato spassosso, come l’albo Room ad Oakland, o lo Store Club a Oakland dove abbiamo avuto grabnde successo svariate volte. Anche il Pleasanton Fairgrounds e il San Mateo Fairgrounds sono stato divertenti. Non saprei, noi amiamo l’area della East Bay e l’area della San Francisco Bay. The Mystic Saloon ad Avery, in California, è pazzesco!
Come descriveresti i Death Valley Gypsies e la loro musica a qualcuno che non ha mai visto prima la band?
Beh, siamo tutti cresciuti ascoltando band come i Led Zeppelin, i Deep Purple, UFO, Black Sabbath, T. Rex, Ramones, FOGHAT, Alice Cooper, Beatles, Stones, roba del genere. Così quel tipo di musica ha influenzato il nostro modo di suonare e il nostro stile nel songwriting ovviamente, almeno un pochino. E questa è una cosa positiva.
I DVG e i social
Io “frequento” spesso la pagina Facebook dei Death Valley Gypsies che trovo molto ben fatta, tra il materiale promozionale che postate riguardante gli show futuri ed altro, e i videos delle vostre performances. Immagino che sia una pagina molto frequentate dalle persone in tutto il mondo. In quali altre piattaforme social siete presenti, su Instagram ed altre?
Si’, certo. Siamo su Facebook, Instagram, BlueSky, YouTube e poi c’è un sito ufficiale che proprio in questo periodo stiamo perfezionando, www.DeathValleyGypsies.com. A proposito, ho delle eccitanti news per la stampa.
Sto mettendo in piedi una nuova band con Orion Morningstar dei DVG. Al momento stiamo facendo delle prove e scrivendo dei nuovi pezzi. Credo proprio che ti confiderò il nome, tu sei il primo a saperlo! Black Sun Massacre oppure Black Sun Mass per abbreviare…Questo progetto eun tantino più heavy e più dark del materiale dei DVG. Pensa allo stoner rock con un accenno di psichedelia. Mettici anche Black Sabbath, gli Iron Butterfly che incontrano i primi UFO…Abbiamo tutti un amore e una passione per quella musica con un accenno di riffs psichedelici. Inoltre ci piacciono quei film tipo horror di culto, Russ Meyer, Dario Argento, Hammer Horror, quel tipo di stile sperimentale ed eccitante. Così in ogni modo, tenete alta la vostra attenzione perché i BSM stanno arrivando per conquistarvi!

Interview to Davey Love from Death Valley Gypsies
We’re here today to talk to Davey Love of the Death Valley Gypsies. I really like what I’ve seen and heard of The Death Valley Gypsies. I’ve never had the chance to see the band live, but the band comes across really well on the videos of your live shows that I’ve seen on Facebook.
I’ve read that your band played at the Whiskey A GoGo. It sounds like a pretty impressive place to play, considering its place in Rock history. How did the gig go? What was it like playing on a stage that so many great musicians had stood upon?
We actually played the Whiskey a couple of times, first time was a few years ago with the one and only guitar God Michael Schenker of UFO, then about a year later we played with Enuff Znuff. The shows were sold out and we made a lot of fans, also sold all of our merch. I’d say it went very well. Got to hang with Michael Schenker for a few and I accidentally put a Death Valley Gypsies promo card on his Cadillac!

Davey, could you tell us about the band as far as, who the band members are, when the band was formed and where the band is based?
Davey Love – Guitar, Vocals
Orion Morningstar – Vocals
Fernando Torres – Bass
J.V. Fowler – Percussion, Vocals
Angi Makk – Guitar, Vocals
We all met after I ran an ad for band members. I pretty much knew what I wanted to do, just had to find the guys that could pull it off together. We officially became the Death Valley Gypsies summer of 2017. We’re based out of the San Francisco Bay Area.
In your opinion, what sets the Death Valley Gypsies apart from other bands?
Well, I think we are totally doing what we want to do. We write our own tunes and put on a cool live show. We are old-school rock and roll fans and musicians, we love vintage tones and styles. Today there are more 70s rock tribute bands and cover bands than original bands, that says something about how cool our styles are for sure!
The favourite DVG clubs
What’s the band’s favorite gig location, do you have a place where you play often?
The Whiskey is cool, the Ritz in San Jose, CA, (we played there with The Lords of Altamont), Gilman Street in Berkeley, CA was a gas, Elbo Room in Oakland, Stork Club in Oakland was a blast a few times, Pleasanton Fairgrounds and San Mateo Fairgrounds are fun. I don’t know, we love the East Bay Area and San Francisco Bay Area. The Mystic Saloon in Avery, CA is a blast!
How would you describe the Death Valley Gypsies and your music to someone who’s never seen or heard the band before?
Well, we all grew up listening to bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, UFO, Black Sabbath, T. Rex, Ramones, FOGHAT, Alice Cooper, Beatles, Stones, stuff like that, so that stuff has influenced our playing styles and writing styles of course, at least a little bit, and that’s a good thing.

I’m familiar with the Death Valley Gypsies Facebook page, which I find quite impressive between the excellent promo material you’re putting out there on future shows etc, and the videos of your performances. I imagine it’s seen on Facebook by many people around the world. What other social media platforms are you on, are you on Instagram or any others?
Yeah sure, Facebook, Instagram, BlueSky, YouTube, and of course there’s the web sight which might be getting an upgrade right now, www.DeathValleyGypsies.com. If folks just Google our name, lots of info should come up, and check out our Death Valley Gypsies show models page too!

I do have some very exciting news hot off the press! I’m starting a new band with Orion Morningstar from DVG, we are currently in rehearsals and writing brand new songs… I guess I’ll tell you the name, you’re the first to know! Black Sun Massacre or Black Sun Mass for short… this project is a little heavier and darker than DVG stuff. Think Stoner Rock with some fuzzy psychedelic thrown in… Black Sabbath, Iron Butterfly, meets early UFO…We all have a love and passion for that heavy fuzz riff stuff and cult type horror and biker films, Russ Meyer, Dario Argento, Hammer Horror, that exciting exploitation style. So anyways, just be on the lookout, ‘cause BSM are coming to get ya!
