Lalle Larsson (nome completo Lars-Egon Larsson, nato a Malmö il 19 Maggio del 1974) è probabilmente il tastierista e compositore più apprezzato di tutta la Scandinavia. Lalle ha costruito la sua carriera un passo alla volta con costanza, determinazione, disciplina e talento e questo gli è valso il plauso del pubblico ma anche dei colleghi. In questi anni ha suonato, tra gli altri, negli Ominox, Anderson/Stolt, The Flower Kings, Syrek, Karmakanic, Agents of Mercy, Kaipa Da Capo…

Presto in tour con Steve Hackett

Si è accorto di lui anche il leggendario ex chitarrista dei Genesis Steve Hackett che lo ha voluto sul palcoscenico nella Steve Hackett Band. Dal prossimo gennaio in poi, infatti, Lalle prenderà il posto di Roger King nell’acclamato gruppo per le date del tour Best of Genesis & Solo Gems. BACKdigit ha intervistato il bravo musicista e per far felice tutto il popolo del prog rock che ci segue, si è fatto raccontare qualcosa sulla nuova, eccitante esperienza che lo attende.

Come ci si sente ad essere il nuovo tastierista della Steve Hackett Band?
Sono emozionato! Steve è fantastico e mi sento davvero onorato di potermi unire alla sua band e alla sua crew!

Come hai conosciuto Steve Hackett?
L’ho incrociato in diverse occasioni nel corso degli anni, suonando agli stessi festival, ecc. In un modo o nell’altro ho anche lavorato con la maggior parte dei membri della sua band. Conosco Jonas e Nad da oltre vent’anni e siamo grandi amici. Abbiamo anche lavorato insieme in una band con Roine Stolt chiamata Agents of Mercy. Sia Nad che Roine e Jonas sono stati in tour con Hackett. Poi c’è, ovviamente, il legame con i Karmakanic/Flower Kings.

Una carriera brillante e i progetti futuri

Secondo la stampa, sei il tastierista più blasonato della Svezia. Sicuramente hai lavorato duro per raggiungere questi risultati… Cosa stai facendo al momento prima di cominciare con la Steve Hackett Band l’anno prossimo?
Sono grato di aver avuto l’opportunità di essere coinvolto in così tanti progetti creativi e band diverse. Al momento, i Flower Kings sono nelle fasi finali del mixaggio di un album dal vivo tratto da un tour che abbiamo fatto all’inizio di quest’anno insieme a Neal Morse & The Resonance e sto lavorando a del nuovo materiale per il prossimo album.

Poi c’è anche una nuovissima uscita intitolata “Syrek – Story 2”. Un album prog rock/metal strumentale ipertecnico che vede la mia partecipazione più quella di Terry Syrek, Marco Minnemann, Bryan Beller e Mohini Dey. Inoltre attualmente sono in tour negli Stati Uniti in veste di direttore musicale di uno spettacolo intitolato “Music of ABBA”. Dopodiché passerò il resto dell’anno a trascrivere il materiale di Hackett/Genesis.

Alla “scoperta” della musica dei Genesis

Sei un fan dei Genesis? Tra le loro canzoni qual è la tua preferita?
In realtà sono abbastanza nuovo alla musica dei Genesis degli anni ’70, ma una volta che avrò approfondito il repertorio, sono sicuro che troverò vari pezzi preferiti. Detto questo, mi piacciono molto Firth of Fifth e Cinema Show.

Il tuo stile sarà molto diverso da quello di Roger King quando ti troverai sul palco con la band?
La maggior parte dei brani sono stati composti con molta cura, quindi in questo senso è quasi come suonare della musica classica. Rimarrò quindi fedele all’originale, proprio come ha fatto Roger. D’altro canto, ogni musicista ha la sua impronta unica e questa traspare sempre anche nelle parti scritte.

L’amicizia con Jonas Reingold

Jonas Reingold è il bassista della band di Steve Hackett. Come dicevamo prima hai già suonato con lui in diversi progetti. Hai sicuramente parlato con Jonas del tuo ingresso nella band. Ti ha dato qualche consiglio a riguardo?
Jonas è un collaboratore di lunga data e credo che sia stato lui a raccomandarmi a Steve. Abbiamo una fiducia così profonda l’uno nell’altro e un rispetto reciproco dovuto ad anni di lavoro insieme, quindi no, nessun consiglio in realtà, non ce n’è stato bisogno. Roger è stato tanto gentile e mi ha garantito che mi aiuterà con i suoni e la produzione. Lui tra l’altro è un tipo simpatico, intellettuale, con un grande senso dell’umorismo ed entrambi condividiamo l’interesse per la musica orchestrale moderna. È fantastico il fatto che sia disposto a supportarmi e a rispondere alle mie domande.

Il passato negli Agents of Mercy con Nad Sylvan

Hai accennato al fatto che facevi parte degli Agents of Mercy e che avevi già lavorato con Nad Sylvan. Ti piace il modo in cui canta le canzoni dei Genesis nella Steve Hackett Band?
Si’, Nad è un caro amico. Penso che sia perfetto per la band di Steve. Ha quel timbro di voce alla Gabriel/Collins e ha una grande presenza scenica.

Il potere del progressive rock

Ultima domanda: secondo te al momento come stanno andando le cose per quanto concerne la scena prog rock?
A giudicare dai festival, dalle crociere prog e dai tour, penso che la scena prog sia viva e vegeta. C’è sicuramente un pubblico. D’altro canto, andare in tour sta diventando sempre più costoso. I bus, i costi di viaggio, gli hotel e il cibo sono molto più costosi ora rispetto a, diciamo, dieci anni fa.

È davvero difficile per alcune delle band più nuove e meno affermate guadagnarsi da vivere facendo musica. Io sono davvero fortunato a poter fare quello che faccio. Sono più di trent’anni che vado in tournée, incido dischi professionalmente e guadagno dignitosamente. Ne sono molto grato.
La musica è una grande medicina e poter viaggiare in tutto il mondo e diffondere positività e amore, vedere le persone sorridere e unirsi, tutto per amore della musica, è una cosa meravigliosa.

How does it feel like being the new keyboard player of the Steve Hackett Band?”

I’m excited! Steve is great, and I feel really honored to join his band and crew!

How did you come across Steve Hackett?

I have crossed paths with Steve on a number of occasions over the years, playing the same festivals etc., have also worked with most of his band members in one way or another.

I have known Jonas and Nad for over twenty years, and we are close friends.
We also had a band with Roine Stolt called Agents of Mercy. Both Nad, Roine and Jonas have all toured with Hackett.
Then there is, of course, the Karmakanic/Flower Kings connection.

His brilliant career and future projects

According to the Press, you are the most prominent keyboard player in Sweden. You certainly worked hard to achieve these results…
What are you doing at present before joining the Steve Hackett Band next year?

I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity to be involved in so many different creative projects and bands.
As of now, The Flower Kings are in the final stages of mixing a live album from a tour we did earlier this year (together with Neal Morse & The Resonance) and I’m working on some new material for the next Flower Kings album.

There is also a brand-new release called” Syrek – Story 2.” A hyper technical instrumental prog rock/metal album featuring myself, Terry Syrek, Marco Minnemann, Bryan Beller and Mohini Dey.

As we speak, I’m in the US touring as the Music Director for a ”Music of ABBA”    show. After that I will spend the rest of the year transcribing the Hackett/Genesis material.

“Discovering” Genesis music

Are you a Genesis fan, and what is your fav Genesis song?

I am actually fairly new to the 70s Genesis music,
But once I go deep into the repertoire, I’m sure I will find some new favorites.
Having said that, I really like Firth of Fifth and Cinema Show.

Will your style differ very much from the one of Roger King while on stage with the band?

Most of the songs are thoroughly composed, so it’s almost like classical music in that sense.
I will stay true to the originals just like Roger did.
Then again, every musician has their own unique fingerprint and that will always shine through even in the written parts.

His friendship with Jonas Reingold

Jonas Reingold is the bass player of the Steve Hackett band. You have played on various projects with him already. You certainly talk to Jonas about your joining the Steve Hackett band. Did you get any piece of advice from him about it?

Jonas is a longtime collaborator and I believe he also recommended me to Steve.
We have such a deep trust and mutual respect from years of working together, so no advice really.

Roger has been so gracious, and he will help me with the sounds and the production side of things.
Roger is such a nice guy, intellectual, with a great sense of humor and we both share an interest in modern orchestral music.
It feels great to have him there for support and to answer my questions.

The experience with Agents of Mercy and Nad Sylvan

You were part of Agents of Mercy and worked with Nad Sylvan too.
Do you like the way he sings Genesis songs?

Yes, Nad is a dear friend.
I think Nad is perfect for Steve’s band. He’s got that Gabriel/Collins timbre in his voice, and he’s got a great stage presence.

The power of progressive rock music

Last question: the prog rock scene has been dominant for years.
How are things at present?

The power of progressive rock music
Judging from the festivals, the prog cruises and tours, I think that the prog scene is alive and well.
There is definitely an audience for it. Then again, it is getting more and more expensive to tour.
Tour buses, travel costs, hotels and food are a lot more expensive now than it was, let’s say, ten years ago. It’s really tough for some of the newer, less established, bands to make a living only by doing music.

I am so fortunate to be able to do what I do. I’ve been touring and recording professionally for over thirty years now, and I’m making a decent living.
I’m very grateful. Music is a great healer and to be able to travel all over the world and spread positivity and love, see people smiling and unite, all for the love of music, is such a beautiful thing. With so much negativity going on in the world, we need that more than ever now.
