La loro musica nasce dall’unione di melodie medievali e la potenza del doom metal, utilizzando strumenti antichi come la ghironda e la cornamusa insieme a chitarre distorte. I loro spettacoli sono teatrali, con attori e proiezioni, ma la musica rimane sempre centrale. La band non cerca di cambiare la scena metal, ma di creare qualcosa che piaccia a loro. Il brano “Anchorhold” tratta il tema dell’isolamento, ispirandosi agli anacoreti. Attualmente non sono previsti tour.Questa intervista agli Apocalypse Orchestra ci svela un universo artistico ricco di storia, mistero e sonorità uniche.

Intervista ad Andreas degli Apocalypse Orchestra di Cristina Speranza

Il vostro nuovo album, “A Plague upon Thee”, parla di storie oscure del passato, come gli zeloti e i saccheggi infernali. Cosa vi ha spinto a scegliere temi così macabri?

Spesso perché  tutto sommato li troviamo divertenti. Ci sono molte di queste pecuriali pratiche storiche di cui non si parla nei libri di storia, quindi scriviamo canzoni su di esse. E se poi questi temi lirici sono sull’aspetto macabro delle cose, così sia!

Il vostro sound è un mix tra la melodia medievale e la potenza del doom metal. Come siete riusciti a mettere insieme questi due stili in un modo così unico e potente? Il fraseggio delle vere melodie medievali è in realtà molto adatto ad essere suonato in tempi più lenti. E poiché le melodie non sono strettamente in tonalità maggiore o minore come siamo abituati oggigiorno, è abbastanza facile armonizzarle in un modo che risulti molto cupo.

I vostri spettacoli dal vivo hanno uno stile teatrale e vedono la presenza di attori, fuochi e proiezioni. Come riuscite a trasformare la vostra musica in uno spettacolo così intenso e quanto è importante per voi l’aspetto visivo?

L’aspetto visivo è molto importante per noi perché aggiunge profondità agli spettacoli. D’altra parte, cerchiamo di non dipendere da nessuna teatralità, perché non è sempre possibile aggiungere questi elementi  allo show a causa della logistica o del budget. Se suoniamo al chiuso in un piccolo club,  ad esempio, qualsiasi cosa con il fuoco potrebbe essere fuori questione. Quindi la cosa più importante deve essere sempre la musica. Così, anche se i nostri “tempi” possono essere lenti, cerchiamo sempre di portare quanta più intensità ed energia possibile nell’esecuzione musicale.

Qual è la traccia che, secondo te, rappresenta di più lo stile degli Apocalypse Orchestra?

Un nostro amico che ha partecipato a diversi dei nostri video musicali pensa che “Saint Yersinia” sia la traccia che veramente cattura l’essenza di ciò che rappresentiamo, quindi andiamo avanti così!

Qual è stata la principale fonte di ispirazione per scrivere il materiale per il tuo nuovo album?

È una domanda difficile a cui rispondere. Dal momento che tutti noi scriviamo i pezzi in una certa misura, non puoi davvero individuare una fonte specifica. Le idee e i temi dei testi possono provenire da libri di storia, documentari, arte e quant’altro. Musicalmente direi che molta dell’ispirazione deriva dalla vera musica medievale, ma non esclusivamente. I nostri gusti musicali spaziano da diversi tipi di metal fino alla musica folk scandinava, quindi la nostra fonte di ispirazione è vasta!

Utilizzate strumenti molto antichi, come la ghironda e la cornamusa insieme a chitarre distorte. Perché questa scelta particolare e quanto questo contribuisce alla creazione del vostro sound?

Questa domanda in realtà si collega ad alcune delle precedenti. Mikael era molto affascinato dalla musica medievale e così decise di imparare a suonare questi veri strumenti medievali. Questa cosa a sua volta lo portò a essere in grado di incorporare quei suoni in alcuni dei nostri primi progetti, cose che facevamo prima di fondare  questa band. Quindi quando lui ed Erik hanno dato vita agli Apocalypse Orchestra era abbastanza ovvio che la ghironda e le cornamuse dovessero essere  in primo piano. E il sound “ronzante” si adattano così bene a un muro di suoni distorto!

“Anchorhold” parla di isolamento. Questo oggi come oggi sembra essere un tema molto importante nella nostra società. Hai sperimentato tu stesso l’effetto dell’isolamento e da dove nasce l’idea del pezzo?

L’idea per il testo è nata dal fenomeno stesso. È davvero affascinante pensare che le persone fossero così ferme nelle  loro convinzioni religiose da decidere di farsi murare in quel modo. Non ha nulla a che fare con le nostre esperienze di isolamento, si tratta più di provare a immaginare  ciò che hanno sperimentato questi anacoreti.

Il vostro primo album è stato accolto molto calorosamente. Quali sono le tue aspettative per il nuovo cd?

Non sappiamo davvero cosa aspettarci visto che siamo stati assenti per un bel po’ di tempo. Ma crediamo di aver realizzato un album  più uniforme del precedente e che contiene ancora gli stessi elementi che hanno fatto accogliere così bene “The End Is Nigh”.

Avete mai avuto l’ambizione di cambiare, in qualche modo, la scena musicale metal con le vostre idee innovative?

No, per niente. Volevamo solo mescolare gli elementi medievali e folk con un ritmo più lento per fare qualcosa di diverso. Ma non è stata una scelta calcolata, si trattava più che altro di creare qualcosa che volevamo ascoltare noi stessi, che ci piaceva.

Quali sono i vostri progetti futuri? State pianificando un tour per promuovere le canzoni di “A Plague upon Thee”?

Al momento non sono previsti tour, ma vedremo cosa succederà a venire.

The new album, “A Plague upon Thee” talks about obscure stories from the past, like the zealots and infernal plunders. What made you choose such macabre themes?

Often because we find them amusing ourselves. There are lots of these weird historical practices that aren’t talked about in history lessons, so we write songs about them instead! And if these lyrical themes happen to be on the macabre side of things, so be it!

Your sound is a mix between medieval melody and the power of doom metal. How did you succeed in putting together these two styles in a way so unique and powerful?

The phrasings of real medieval melodies are actually very suited to be played in slower tempos. And since the melodies aren’t strictly in major or minor keys like we’re used to nowadays it’s quite easy to harmonize them in a very gloomy and sombre way.

Your live shows have a theatrical style, with actors, fires and screenings. How do you manage to transform your music into a such intense show and how important is for you the visual aspect?

The visual aspect is very important to us because it adds depth to the shows. On the other hand, we try to not be dependent on any theatrics, because it’s not always possible to add these elements due to logistics or budget. If we’re playing indoors in a small club, anything with fire might be out of the question for instance. So the most important thing will always be the music itself. So even though our tempos might be slow, we always try to bring as much intensity and energy as possible into the musical performance.

What is the track that, in your opinion, represents the most Apocalypse Orchestra style?

A friend of ours who has participated in several of our music videos thinks that “Saint Yersinia” is the one track that captures the essence of what we’re about, so let’s go with that!

What was the main source of inspiration for writing the material for your new album?

That’s a hard question to answer. Since we all write the material to a certain degree you can’t really pinpoint one source. Lyrical ideas and themes can come from history books, documentaries, art and whatnot. Musically I would say lots of inspiration comes from actual medieval music, but not exclusively. Our musical tastes range from different kinds of metal to scandinavian folk music so our source of inspiration is vast!

You use very ancient instruments, like hurdy gurdy and bagpipes together with distorted guitars. Why this particular choice and how much does it contribute to the creation of your sound?

This question actually ties in with some of the previous ones. Mikael had a growing fascination with medieval music and decided to learn to play these actual medieval instruments. And that in turn led to him being able to incorporate those sounds in some of our earlier projects that we had prior to this band. So when he and Erik started Apocalypse Orchestra it was pretty obvious that the hurdy and the bagpipes should be the leading instruments. And the droning sounds fit so good together with a distorted wall of sound!

APOCALYPSE ORCHESTRA INTERVIEW

The song “Anchorhold” is probably about isolation. This seems to be a very important thematic in this period in our society. Did you experiment with the effect of isolation yourself and where does the idea of the song comes from?

The idea for the lyrics came from the phenomenon itself. It’s really fascinating that people were so convicted in their religious beliefs that they actually committed themselves to be bricked in like that. So it really has nothing to do with our own experiences with isolation, it’s more about trying to imagine that aspect of what these anchorites experienced.

Your first album was very warmly welcomed. What are your expectations for the new cd?

We really don’t know what to expect since we’ve been absent for quite a long time. But we believe that we have made an album that is more even than our previous one and still contains the same elements that made “The End Is Nigh” so well received.

Did you ever have the ambition of changing, in some way, the metal musical scene with your innovative ideas?

No, not at all. We just wanted to mix the medieval and folk elements with a slower tempo to do something different. But it wasn’t a calculated choice, it was more about creating something we wanted to listen to ourselves.

What are your future projects? Are you planning a tour to promote the songs of “A Plague upon Thee”?

No tours are planned at the moment, but we’ll see what happens!
