Marianne Faithfull, regina della swingin‘ London degli anni ’60, divenne inizialmente celebre come girlfriend di Mick Jagger e amica di Brian Jones e Keith Richards dei Rolling Stones. La cantante, songwriter e attrice ci ha lasciato lo scorso 30 gennaio 2025 a Londra.

Quando era ancora una teenager Marianne Faithfull conquistò ben quattro top ten hits in UK tra il 1964 e il 65. Pensate che aveva iniziato ad esibirsi soltanto nel 1964. A marzo di quello stesso anno era stata notata dal manager dei Rolling Stones Andrew Loog Oldham al party di lancio per un nuovo album della band. Oldham non aveva mai sentito Marianne cantare nel momento in cui la vide ma seppe da subito che era destinata alla gloria del pop. Poco dopo le venne offerto un contratto che lei accettò per registrare dei dischi e immaginatevi che aveva soltanto diciassette anni. Keith e Mick avrebbero scritto la sua prima canzone. Il pezzo intitolato As Tears Go by fu una hit che raggiunse il numero nove delle charts UK. I suoi successivi tre singoli tutti pubblicati nel 1965 sarebbero ugualmente diventati delle top ten hits.

Marianne Faithfull: il cuore della scena pop a Londra

Marianne fu il cuore della scena musicale groovy della Londra degli anni sessanta. Come cantante, attrice e per la sua relazione sentimentale con Mick Jagger. La sua fama conquistata velocemente la mise pero sotto i riflettori e sotto il giudizio del pubblico. Lei e Mick non potevano fare un passo che non fosse riportato dai media. Le cose peggiorarono drammaticamente durante una perquisizione ai Redlands, la casa di proprietà di Keith Richards nel Sussex. La polizia infatti trovoò una piccola quantità di droga il che portò Keith e Mick all’arresto. Sebbene Marianne non fu arrestata fu comunque trascinata nel fango insieme a Keith e Mick.

Quest’episodio, scioccante per l’epoca sarebbe stato l’inizio di anni difficili che Marianne dovette affrontare. Nel 1965 si sposò con John Dunbar dal quale ebbe il figlio Nicholas e divorziò l’anno successivo. A quel punto si trasferì a casa di Brian Jones con Brian e la sua fidanzata Anita Pallenberg. Fu in quel periodo che Marianne cominciò a dilettarsi con droghe “ricreazionali”, in particolar modo la marjuana alla quale divenne immediatamente dipendente. La sua relazione con Mick Jagger durò fino al 1970 l’anno in cui perse la custodia di Nicholas. Da lì la caduta verso la dipendenza da eroina. Un severo caso di laringite verosimilmente combinata con il fumo, l’alcool e l’abuso di droghe abbassarono e cambiarono il tono di voce della Faithfull. La voce bassa, roca, sarebbe diventata il suo marchio di fabbrica. Durante gli anni lei continuò sempre a fare dischi.

Marianne che sperimentò anche periodi in cui rimase senza tetto si risposò nel 1979 con il giornalista Benjamin Brierley e si trasferì a New York. Poi nel 1985 dopo un periodo trascorso in un rehab Marianne riuscì a liberarsi dalla dipendenza dalle droghe prima di divorziare nel 1986. La Faithfull si sposò una terza volta nel 1988 con l’attore Giorgio Della Terza dal quale divorziò nel 1991. Continuò a fare musica e a ricevere importanti riconoscimenti per il suo impegno nello showbiz fino al giorno in cui ha lasciato questo mondo.

I tanti successi tra musica e recitazione

Il suo primo album, intitolato semplicemente Marianne Faithfull, uscí nel 1965. Da li la Faithfull non si fermò più continuando, tra gli altri, con Love is a Mist (1967), Broken English del 1979, Dangerous Acquanintances (1981), A Secret Life (1995). Quindi Kissin’ Time del 2002, Horse and High Heels del 2011, Give my love to London del 2014 fino a She walks in Beauty del 2021. Come attrice Marianne Faithfull ha recitato in teatro, per il cinema e la televisione. Raggiunse la grande fama in Francia con il film The Girl on a Motorcycle con Alain Delon.

Fu Ofelia in Hamlet al the Round House a Londra nel 1969, recitò nei film Ghost Story e Assault on Agathon. In tv ebbe ruoli tra gli altri in The Door of Opportunity e Terrible Jim Fitch. Ha preso parte al musical di Tom Waits The Black Rider. Quindi ancora al cinema nel biopic Maria Antoinette, Irina Palm, Faces in the Crowd…

While she was still a teenager, Marianne Faithfull enjoyed four top ten hits in the UK from 1964
to 1965. She had begun performing in 1964. Then in March of that same year, she was spotted
by Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham at a launch party for a new Stones album.
Oldham had never heard Marianne sing but the moment he saw her. He knew she was destined
for Pop Stardom. Soon after this, Marianne would be offered and accept a recording contract at the age of seventeen. Keith and Mick would write her first song. The song titled, ‘As Tears Go Bye’, was a hit. It peaked at number 9 on the UK record charts. Her next three singles all
released in 1965, would also be top 10 hits.

Marianne was at the heart of the groovy 1960’s London music scene, as a singer, actress and her romantic relationship with Mick Jagger. Her new found fame had placed her under close public scrutiny. She and Mick couldn’t make a move that wasn’t reported in the press. Things worsened dramatically when during a drug bust at Keith Richards Sussex home ‘Redlands’. The police found a small amount of drugs.
Which led to Keith and Mick’s arrest. Although not arrested herself, Marianne’s name would be
dragged through the mud along with Keith and Mick’s.

This episode, shocking at the time, would be the beginning of the difficult years that lie ahead for Marianne. Who was wed in1965, had a child that same year, left her husband John Dunbar in 1966, then relocated to London with her son Nicholas. Where they moved into Rolling Stone, Brian Jones’s house, with Brian and his girlfriend, Anita Pallenberg. It was about this time that Marianne began dabbling with recreational drugs, particularly marijuana, which she readily imbibed assorbito in. Her relationship with Mick Jagger would last till 1970. The same year she would lose custody of her son Nicholas. Then after sliding into heroin addiction. A severe case of laryngitis, most likely combined with smoking, drinking and drug use permanently lowered and changed Marianne’s singing voice. Marianne, who at times experienced periods of homelessness, remarried in 1979 to journalist and writer Benjamin Brierley, moved to New York City in 1981.Then in 1985, with the help of rehab, Marianne conquered her addiction issues, before divorcing again in 1987. Then she married actor Giorgio Della Terza divorcing again in 1991.
