Alla riscoperta dell’album dei Moody Blues In Search of a Lost Chord, uscito nel 1968 e diventato uno dei più gettonati del gruppo.
‘In Search of a Lost Chord’ è un album meraviglioso, ed è enormemente diverso dal precedente disco dei Moody Blues, l’innovativo Days of Future Past probabilmente il primo album prog-rock mai inciso, con il quale i Moody Blues si esibivano insieme alla The London Festival Orchestra. Nel loro successivo lavoro, ‘In Search of a Lost Chord’, la band decise di abbandonare l’orchestra e suonare tutti gli strumenti, 33 in tutto e che includevano dal sitar al violoncello. Fino ad uno strumento a quei tempi di nuova concezione chiamato mellotron.
La loro musica con quel disco venne incentrata sul mellotron, con le sue note sognanti che si adattavano perfettamente all’atmosfera psichedelica dell’album.

‘In Search of a Lost Chord’: tra psychedelia e musica indiana
‘In Search of a Lost Chord’ è un mix di psichedelia e influenze musicali indiane imbevute di misticismo e LSD. Le sessioni di registrazione, che durarono da gennaio a giugno del 1968, furono caratterizzate da sperimentazione e improvvisazione con un’atmosfera da jam session che invadeva lo studio durante tutta la lavorazione del disco. Mentre un sacco di idee spuntavano dal nulla e venivano approfondite. Questo sarebbe stato l’album in cui i Moody Blues avrebbero trovarono il loro mojo che li avrebbe lanciati in un viaggio musicale surreale. Portandoli a vette di successo che non avrebbero mai potuto immaginare.

Il tema dell’album
Il tema dell’album è la ricerca e la scoperta di sé, non solo nel mondo psichico ma anche attraverso l’autorealizzazione interiore. Aiutata dalla meditazione, dalle droghe psichedeliche e da trattati religiosi esotici come “Il libro tibetano dei morti e altri scritti religiosi/mistici”. Il produttore Tony Clarke ha descritto la scena delle sessioni di registrazione in questo modo. “Il pavimento dello studio sembrava quello di un museo disseminato da strumenti musicali esotici ovunque”. Tony Clarke sottolineò anche che ogni singola nota, battito o parola
nell’album aveva un significato ed era eseguita dagli stessi Moodies”.
In Search of a Lost Chord, si apre con una poesia assolutamente meravigliosa scritta e recitata dal batterista Graeme Edge. La composizione intitolata “Departure” descrive nel modo più surreale che ci sia un’esperienza sensoriale che sta accadendo. Si conclude con il suono della risata maniacale di Mike Pinder. Che poi si fonde perfettamente con la intro di “Ride My See Saw”, una canzone first class che è invecchiata davvero bene nel corso degli anni. E’ caratterizzata da una chitarra psichedelica/ rock, un accompagnamento ritmico mistico e una voce eccellente.

“Dr. Livingston, I Persume” si concentra sugli esploratori del mondo fisico e sul fatto che abbiano trovato o meno soddisfazione nelle loro ricerche.
“House of Four Doors” è una di quelle canzonì in cui apri una porta e vedi dove ti porta e dietro ognuna di quelle ci sono altre quattro porte dove si nasconde una diversa forma di musica. ‘Legend of the Mind’, ispirata dalla difesa dell’LSD da parte di Timothy Leary e dalla ricerca della pace interiore della band attraverso le sostanze psichedeliche. La canzone correlata è in realtà una visione di come i Moody Blues pensavano che le cose andassero nella San Francisco dei figli dei fiori.

Il lato b dell’album
Il lato b dell’album tratta principalmente della scoperta del sé interiore. “Voices in the Sky”, sottolinea la meraviglia e la gioia della vita e l’importanza di prestare attenzione alle piccole cose che spesso ci passano accanto inosservate. Un modo per incoraggiare gli ascoltatori a sintonizzarsi con il mondo che li circonda. “The Best Way to Travel”, è un pezzo che ho sempre pensato avesse a che fare con le esperienze extracorporee. Ma di recente ho scoperto che ha anche altri diversi significati alternativi. Uno è quello di un viaggio attraverso la vita, alla ricerca della felicità, alla ricerca di uno scopo e di un significato. L’altro significato ha a che vedere con un verso nella canzone, “luce che passa su uno schermo”. Suggerisce che la vita è probabilmente solo un’illusione.
‘Visions of Paradise’ è una visione surreale di uno stato di percezione alterata. Forse aiutato da sostanze psichedeliche, è ispirato dalle frustrazioni che la band ha sperimentato durante il tour negli Stati Uniti. Quindi dai problemi che riguardavano gli studenti universitari e i giovani in generale riguardo la guerra del Vietnam, le tensioni razziali, le leggi sulla droga, ecc. Il testo di ‘The Actor’ parte dal presupposto che la vita è un palcoscenico e siamo tutti attori. In Search of the Lost Chord si conclude con “OM”, una track fortemente influenzata dalla musica indiana. Un’ode alla meditazione trascendentale che invoca un senso di suono cosmico, un suono che è catturato all’interno dell’accordo perduto ora ritrovato, portando luce in perfetta armonia con l’universo.

‘In Search of a Lost Chord’ è il miglior album che i Moody Blues abbiano mai realizzato, una gemma perduta che aspetta di essere riscoperta. Piena zeppa di grandi canzoni che vale la pena di ascoltare se non l’avete mai fatto prima, o semplicemente riascoltare come ho fatto io l’altra sera. Buona musica a tutti!
Re-discovering “In Search of a Lost Chord”
‘In Search of a Lost Chord’ is a marvelous album, that’s massively different from the Moody Blues previous album the ground breaking, possibly first Prog-rock album, ‘Days of Future Past’, which featured the Moody Blues performing with the ‘The London Festival Orchestra’. On their new album, ‘In Search of a Lost Chord’, the band decided to ditch the orchestra and play every instrument, which numbered 33, on the new album themselves. The instruments used included e everything from a sitar to a cello, to a newly developed instrument called a mellotron. The music centered around the mellotron, with its dreamy notes a perfect fit for the psychedelic mood of the album.

A mix of psychedelia and indian mysical influences
’In Search of a Lost Chord’ is a mix of psychedelia and Indian musical influences drenched in mysticism and LSD. The recording sessions for the album which lasted from January to June of 1968, were characterized by experimentation and improvisation. And a jam session atmosphere that prevailed within the studio throughout the sessions, as endless ideas were improvised, and explored. This would be the album, that the Moody Blues found their mojo and it would set them on a surrealistic musical journey that would lead them to heights of success they could never have imagined.
The theme of the album
The albums theme is quest and self discovery, not only in the psychical world but also through inner self-realization aided by meditation, psychedelic drugs and exotic religious tracks like ‘The Tibetan Book of the Dead, and other religious/mystical writings. Producer Tony Clarke described the scene of the recording sessions, as, “The studio floor resembled a museum with exotic musical instruments shrewd everywhere”. While he also pointed out that every single note, beat or word on the album had meaning and was performed by the Moodies themselves”.
’In Search of a Lost Chord, opens with an absolutely beautiful poem written and spoken by drummer Graeme Edge. The poem called, ‘Departure’, describes in the most surrealistic way, a sensory experience happening. That ends with the sound of Mike Pinder’s maniacal laughter, which then seamlessly merges as the introduction to ‘Ride My See Saw’, an awesome song that has aged really well over the years that features a rockin psychedelic guitar, mystic rhythm accompaniment and excellent vocals.
‘Dr. Livingston, I Persume’, focuses on explorers of the physical world and whether or not they found fulfillment in their searches. ‘House of Four Doors’ is a kind of song, where you open a door and see where it takes you to and behind each of those four doors lies a different form of music. ‘Legend of the Mind’, inspired by Timothy Leary’s advocacy of LSD, and the band’s own search for inner peace through psychedelics. The song related is actually a view of how the Moody Blues thought things were like in the lower powered San Francisco.

The other songs of the Moody Blues album
Side two of the album mostly deals with inner self discovery. ‘Voices in the Sky’, emphasizes the wonder and joy of life and the importance of paying attention to the little things that often pass us by, that also encourages listeners to tune into the world around them and see the wonder and joy that surrounds them. ‘The Best Way to Travel’, is a song I always assumed had something to do with out of body experiences. But I recently learned several other alternative meanings, one is that the song explores traveling through life, in the pursuit of happiness, while also searching for meaning and purpose. Another alternative points out that a line in the song ,” light passing by on a screen”, suggests that life is possibly just an illusion.
The surreal vision of Moody Blues
‘Visions of Paradise’, is a surreal vision of a state of altered perception possibly aided by psychedelics, inspired by the frustrations the band experienced while touring the United States and issues concerning college students and young people in general, as far as how they dealt with issues like the Vietnam War, racial tensions, drug laws, etc. ‘The Actor’ lyrics touch on the idea that life is a stage and we are all actors. Which I guess in one way or another we all are. The album concludes with “OM”, a song heavily influenced by Indian music, that’s an ode to transcendental meditation which invokes a sense of a cosmic sound, a sound that’s captured within the now found lost chord, bringing enlightenment to a being in perfect harmony with the universe.

‘In Search of a Lost Chord’, is the best album, The Moody Blues ever made, a lost gem waiting to be rediscovered that’s jammed packed full of great songs and well worth a listen if you haven’t heard it before, or if just want to listen to it again as I did the other night, enjoy.
