LE SORELLE DABNEY: ELVIRA, MYRTLE E IL PRIGIONIERO NEL BARATTOLO DI CETRIOLI

Nella sinistra cittadina di Haunted Hallow, le sorelle Dabney, Elvira e Myrtle, gestiscono un fiorente commercio di rimedi erboristici mistici e pozioni d’amore molto ricercate. In bilico tra i segreti: i barattoli contenenti le conseguenze che infliggono a chiunque osi sfidarle.

Elvira e Myrtle Dabney vivono nel cuore dei monti Appalachi, nella cittadina di Valley of Joy, sulla Devil Fork Road.

Elvira, la più organizzata e metodica, e Myrtle, la più spensierata e vivace, si prendono cura di un giardino di strane erbe. Ricco di muschio frusciante, erbe che brillano di notte e fiori che emettono melodie. Offrono rimedi naturali agli abitanti del luogo per qualsiasi malanno. Sono anche note per preparare incantesimi, se necessario. E sebbene le sorelle Dabney siano considerate innocue, è meglio non contrariarle. Si dice infatti che abbiano trasformato il loro antipatico vicino Elwood Dupree in una rana e che lo tengano rinchiuso in un grande barattolo di sottaceti sullo scaffale più alto della dispensa.

La loro specialità è preparare pozioni d’amore magiche, per le quali la gente accorre da ogni dove. Ma bisogna stare attenti, perché se alla pozione manca un capello o un’unghia del bersaglio, la pozione d’amore non funzionerà. Per le sorelle Dabney, il segreto di una pozione che funzioni davvero e duri nel tempo è una singola goccia scintillante di “Lacrima Gioiosa del Lutto”. La maggior parte delle persone pensa che i fantasmi siano solo capaci di provare dolore, ma Elvira e Myrtle sanno che non è così.

Cercano in particolare la “Lacrima di un Fantasma Felice”, una sostanza rara che viene versata solo quando uno spirito assiste a un momento di amore vero e disinteressato tra i vivi. La lacrima non è salata come una lacrima umana. E’ fresca, brilla di una tenue luce argentea e ha un leggero odore di pioggia su un selciato caldo. A sua insaputa, hanno reclutato un vedovo del posto affinché si sedesse su una panchina specifica a mezzanotte, sapendo che lo spirito della sua defunta moglie lo stava osservando. Quando sente la presenza della sua defunta moglie, sorride e il fantasma di sua moglie versa una lacrima di sollievo. Mentre Myrtle segue con una minuscola fiala di cristallo, raccogliendo la goccia prima che tocchi terra. Poi, quando la goccia viene aggiunta a un calderone di ibisco e miele fumanti, la pozione non fa semplicemente innamorare qualcuno. Crea un legame d’anima. 

Perché chi la beve improvvisamente vede la versione migliore in assoluto della persona che gliel’ha data. Spazzando via la persona che l’ha bevuta, la meschinità e l’ego, lasciando solo una devozione senza fondo. Se la pozione non contiene l’unghia o i capelli del bersaglio, e se qualcuno bevesse una bevanda avvelenata con la “Lacrima del Fantasma Felice” senza gli oggetti del bersaglio, non si limiterebbe a avere una cotta per qualcuno.

Ma si innamorerebbe perdutamente della prima persona o cosa che vede. Ed è esattamente quello che è successo a Prudence Pringle, insegnante della Valle della Gioia. Un giorno, mentre si aggirava per il cottage delle sorelle Dabney, e incrociò lo sguardo con Elwood Dupree, seduto nel suo barattolo di sottaceti, si innamorò perdutamente. Agli occhi di chiunque altro, Elwood sembrava una rana toro verrucosa e viscida. Ma per Prudence, lui sembrava un principe di smeraldo maledetto, un’anima incompresa intrappolata in un corpo verde.

Cercarono di fermarla prima che potesse afferrare Elwood, baciarlo e trasformarlo di nuovo in un essere umano. E per fortuna ci riuscirono. Ma ora le sorelle si trovavano in una situazione difficile. Avevano bisogno di qualcosa per contrastare l’incantesimo che aveva posseduto Prudence, e ne avevano bisogno in fretta. 

Così prepararono un infuso a base di radice di tarassaco e vecchi rancori, che avrebbe dovuto risolvere il problema. Ma Prudence si rifiutò di prendere l’antidoto perché, per la prima volta nella sua vita, era veramente felice e non era più infelice. Diventò invece la custode della rana, tenendo Elwood nel suo barattolo ma assicurandosi che venisse nutrito con le mosche più pregiate della città. Alla fine, le sorelle continuarono a curare il loro giardino, Prudence ottenne la rana ed Elwood rimase una rana. Quindi tutti vinsero tranne Elwood.

That they offer as natural cures to locals, for whatever ails them. They’ve also been known to brew up a hex, if the occasion calls for it. And although the Dabney sisters are considered harmless, don’t cross them. For chatter on the grape vine, says they turned their nasty neighbor Elwood Dupree into a frog, and keep, him in a large pickle jar on the top shelf of their pantry..

Their specialty is brewing up witchy love potions that people come from near and far for. But one must beware, for if the potion lacks a target’s hair or fingernail, the love potion just won’t do. For the Dabney sisters, the secret to a brew that actually works, and lasts, is a single shimmering drop of “The Joyous Mourner’s Tear.” Most people think ghosts are only capable of sorrow, but Elvira and Myrtle know better.

“Tear of a Happy Ghost”, a rare substance shed only when a spirit witnesses a moment of true, selfless love among the living. The tear is not salty like a human tear; it’s cool, glows with a soft silver light, and smells faintly of rain on a hot pavement. To get the tear, the sisters don’t just go to a graveyard; they have to play matchmaker for the living to trigger the ghosts emotion. Unknown to him, they recruited a local widower to sit on a specific bench at midnight, knowing his late wife’s spirit is watching.

When he feels his late wife’s presence he smiles, and his wife’s ghost sheds a tear of relief. While Myrtle follows behind with a tiny crystal vial, catching the drop before it hits the ground. Then when the drop is added to a cauldron of simmering hibiscus and honey, the potion doesn’t just make someone fall in love. It creates a soul tether.

Which is exactly what happened to Prudence Pringle, The Valley of Joy’s judgemental school teacher. Who wandered down to the Dabney sisters cottage one day, while and locked eyes with Elwood Dupree, sitting in his pickle jar, she fell hopelessly in love. To anyone else Elwood looked like a warty, slimy bullfrog. But to Prudence, he looked like a cursed emerald prince, a misunderstood soul trapped in a green body.

Within seconds, she was blowing kisses to him through the glass jar. Then she decided to open the jar to give her true love a kiss to break the spell he was under. But just as she did. Elvira and Myrtle walked into the room, and saw the spellbound Prudence about to reach into the jar. They tried to stop her before she could grab Elwood, kiss him and turn him back into a human, and luckily they succeeded. But now the sisters had a situation on their hands. They needed something to counter the spell that possessed Prudence and they needed it quickly.

So they brewed up a tea made of dandelion root and old grudges, that should do the job. But Prudence refused to take the antidote because, for the first time in her life she was truly happy, and was no longer miserable. She instead became the frog’s guardian, keeping Elwood in his jar but making sure he’s fed the finest flies in town. In the end, the sisters still tended their garden, Prudence got the frog and Elwood stayed a frog, so everyone won but Elwood.
