INTERVISTA CON JOHN CORABI DEI THE DEAD DAISIES – DI CRISTINA SPERANZA
La canzone “Love That’ll Never Be” è stata scritta originariamente per un tuo progetto solista Perchè poi hai deciso di usarla per i The Dead Daisies?
E’ vero. Questa era una canzone che era stata scritta per un disco solista, ma non l’avevo ancora pubblicata. Quando sono tornato a lavorare con i The Dead Daisies e abbiamo discusso sulla possibilità di fare un nuovo disco ho proposto al resto della band di ascoltare questo pezzo. I ragazzi se ne sono innamorati, quindi l’abbiamo registrata. Abbiamo dovuto apportare alcune modifiche alla canzone per renderla più “rock”, ma adoro il modo in cui l’abbiamo realizzata insieme!!!
A parer mio il sound del pezzo ricorda un po’ quello degli Allman Brothers. Quali sono le tue principali influenze musicali?
Beh questo lo prendo come un ENORME complimento!!! Gli Allman Brothers erano una band leggendaria e, a dire il vero, volevamo un po’ di quel classico tocco southern rock…
La canzone parla di una ragazza che si rende conto troppo tardi di ciò che aveva. C’è una vera storia personale dietro “Love That’ll Never Be”?
Diciamo che è un pò una storia vera. Ma alla fine penso che sia nella natura umana mettere in discussione le proprie scelte quando le cose vanno male. Il proverbio dice “L’erba del vicino sembra più verde”… ma non è sempre così. Anche alcune delle mie ex fidanzate mi hanno detto di aver sbagliato con me ma io ero già andato avanti, quindi era troppo tardi…
Intervista ai Dead Daisies
Come avete lavorato insieme per trasformare il brano originale in una potente ballata rock mantenendo però intatto il suo significato di base?
Abbiamo ovviamente dovuto riesaminare la canzone .La versione originale aveva chitarre acustiche, pianoforte e archi e aveva anche più parti. Quindi, Marti Frederiksen (con il quale l’avevo scritta) ha pensato che la canzone fosse un po’ troppo “soft” e che ci fosse bisogno di darle un po’ di brio. Così Doug ha suggerito un suono di chitarra un po’ più duro ( tipo appunto The Allman Brothers, Black Crowes) e in quel mondo suonava alla grande!!!
Quindi Doug Aldrich ha contribuito aggiungendo il suo tocco energico di chitarra. Puoi raccontarci di quale è stato il suo processo creativo?
Innanzitutto va detto che Doug è un chitarrista incredibile, quindi affronterà sempre le cose e le renderà migliori di quanto potrei mai fare io dal punto di vista del playing. E poi lui è CRESCIUTO molto con la sua scrittura, il che lo ha aiutato a concentrarsi davvero su come da chitarrista può aggiungere qualcosa ai pezzi, suonando ciò di cui c’è davvero bisogno e non un milione di note inutili… E Doug irrompe prepotentemente nelle canzoni di “Light Em’ Up”!!!!
Hai scelto di pubblicare “Love That’ll Never Be” per San Valentino. Qual è il messaggio che vuoi trasmettere con questa scelta?
Onestamente non è stata una mia scelta ma una decisione della band. E che bel giorno (San Valentino) per pubblicare una canzone su una ragazza il cui cuore si spezza, perché si rende conto di aver vissuto una bellissima relazione con qualcuno che dava per scontato, e che non potrà mai più averla… È triste, ma come ho già detto succede sempre…
Intervista ai Dead Daisies
Il singolo è stato pubblicato dopo il successo di “Light’Em Up”. Secondo te, quanto è importante “Love That’ll Never Be” nella tua carriera musicale?
Penso che “Love That’ll Never Be” sia se posso dirlo una canzone semplice ma bellissima con cui molte persone possono identificarsi. Ne sono orgoglioso. Amo il modo in cui è stata registrata e spero che la gente la apprezzi, tanto quanto a me è piaciuto comporla. Ma a dirla tutta sono orgoglioso di quasi ogni canzone che io abbia mai scritto o co-scritto. Sono molto fortunato ad aver avuto una delle mie canzoni mai registrate da qualcuno. Mi sento molto fortunato ad avere ancora l’opportunità di contribuire in qualche modo al mondo della musica.
Avete pianificato due date live in Italia, a Fontaneto D’Agogna e a Padova, a marzo 2025. Cosa ti rende più entusiasta di tornare e suonare per il pubblico italiano? C’è qualcosa di speciale che hai preparato per questi concerti?
Adoro venire in Italia!! Amo la passione dei fan per la musica, amo il cibo, il vino, TUTTO!!! Sono italiano dopotutto, quindi è come “tornare a casa” per rivedere la mia gente… Ora devo solo imparare a parlare la mia lingua madre e il gioco è fatto.. un giorno spero…
Oltre al tour e all’uscita del singolo, quali sono i piani dei The Dead Daisies per il prossimo futuro?
Abbiamo alcune sorprese in arrivo. Stiamo ancora facendo delle date a supporto di “Light Em’ Up”, ma siamo anche nelle fasi finali di pubblicazione di un disco BLUES che abbiamo registrato nei leggendari Fame studios a Muscle Shoals, Alabama mentre registravamo Light Em’ Up…
Sarà un disco fantastico! È la nostra interpretazione di un sacco di vecchi classici blues… rimanete sintonizzati!! E poi ovviamente si torna on the road…
BACKDIGIT ITALY Q&A WITH THE DEAD DAISIES – JOHN CORABI
The song “Love That’ll Never Be” was originally written for a solo project by John Corabi. How did you decide to use it as a The Dead Daisies track?
John: You are correct. This was a song that had been written for a solo record, but I hadn’t released it yet. When I went back to The Dead Daisies we discussed doing a new record so I offered the song for them to check out. Everybody fell in love with it, so we recorded it. We had to make some changes to the song to make it more “rock” but I love the way we did it together!!!
Your single reminds some Allman Brothers’ sound. What are your main musical influences, particularly talking about this rock ballad?
John: Well we’ll take that as a HUGE compliment!!! The Allman Brothers were a legendary band, and to be honest, we were going for a bit of that classic Southern rock feel….
The song is about a girl who realise too late about what she had. Is there a true personal story behind “Love That’ll Never Be”?
John: A little bit based on a true story. But I think it’s HUMAN NATURE, to question your choices when things are going bad. Here we say “The grass looks greener on the other side of the fence”….And it’s not always the case. I’ve had ex-girlfriends tell me later that they made a mistake. But, I had moved on, so it was too late…

How did you work together to transform the original song in a powerful rock ballad keeping its original meaning?
John: We had to re-look at the song as it was. The original version had acoustic guitars, piano, and strings, and even had more parts. So, Marti Frederiksen (who I wrote the original with) felt like the song was a bit “soft” and we needed to rock it up a bit. So Doug, suggested a bit of a tougher guitar sound (I.e. The Allman Brothers, Black Crowes) and it sounded great!!!
Doug Aldrich contribuited adding his energetic guitar touch. Can you tell us about his creative process?
John: Firstly…Doug is obviously an incredible guitar player, so he’s always going to approach things and make them better than I ever could from a playing point of view. But Doug has GROWN a ton with his writing, which has helped him to really focus on how he (as a guitarist) can add to the song, by playing what it NEEDS, not playing a million unnecessary notes…It’s about the song. And DOUG crushed the songs on the “Light Em’ Up” record!!!!
You chose to release “Love That’ll Never B e” on Valentine’s Day. What is the message that you want to send with this choice?
John: Well, I didn’t choose…lol. It was a band decision. And what a fine day (Valentines Day) to release a song, about a girl whose heart is breaking, because she realises she HAD a beautiful relationship with someone she kind of took for granted, and she can NEVER have that again…It’s sad, but it happens all the time…
The single was published after “Light ‘Em Up” success. In your opinion, how important is “Love That’ll Never Be” in your musical career?
John: I think “Love That’ll Never Be” is (if I may say so) a simple but beautiful song that a lot of people can relate to. I’m proud of it. I love how it was recorded. And I hope people enjoy it, as much as I loved creating it. But I’m also proud of ALMOST every song I’ve ever written, or co-written. I’m very blessed to have had any of my songs ever recorded by anyone. I feel very blessed and fortunate to still be given the opportunities to contribute anything to the world of music.
Intervista ai Dead Daisies
You planned two live dates in Italy, in Fontaneto D’Agogna and in Padova, on March 2025. What makes you more enthusiastic about coming back and playing for the Italian audience? Is there anything special that you prepared for these concerts?
John: I love coming to Italy!! I love the fans passion for music, I love the food, the wine, EVERYTHING!!! I’m Italian, so it’s like “coming home” to see my people…Now…I just NEED to learn how to speak my Mother tongue…lol….someday hopefully…
Besides the tour and the release of the single, what are The Dead Daisies plans for the next future?
John: Well…We have a few surprises coming. We’re still doing dates in support of the “Light Em’ Up” record, but we’re also in the finalising stages of releasing a BLUES record we recorded at the legendary FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama while we were recording Light Em’ Up…It’s gonna be awesome! It’s our take on a bunch of old blues classics…stay tuned!! And then it’s back on the road…
