John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest: in arrivo il 17 ottobre l’album Relativity
Esoteric Antenna e Cherry Red Records sono lieti di annunciare la release del nuovo album di John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest, intitolato Relativity.
C’è voluto qualche anno per realizzare il disco, una collezione di canzoni della durata di 78 minuti basati sul concetto dell’essere umano, della sua interazione cosmica e delle sue relazioni. Prodotto dalla band è stato mixato dall’acclamato ingegnere del suono Stephen W Tayler (che ha lavorato con Kate Bush, Rush, Howard Jones, Rupert Hine, Tina Turner… Relativity è un vero sforzo di gruppo da parte di John Lees, Craig Fletcher, Jez Smith e Kevin Whitehead. Si avvale del raffinato bagaglio musicale di Barclay James Harvest ma è anche un prodotto musicale al passo con i nostri tempi. Il risultato è uno dei migliori album di BJH, in tutte le sue varianti, che sia mai stato realizzato negli anni.

Una lunga e prestigiosa carriera
La musica di Barclay James Harvest va avanti da oltre cinquanta anni. Attraverso una serie di album classici (che comprende Gone To Earth divenuto disco di platino), e memorabili performance. Queste includono un concerto dal vivo sui gradini del Reichstag, nel cuore dell’allora divisa Berlino di fronte a 175.000 persone. La registrazione del concerto arrivò dritta al numero uno delle classifiche tedesche e si piazzò al numero 15 di quelle UK. Quindi un concerto open air al parco Treptower di Berlino il 14 luglio del 1987 di fronte all’incirca a 170.000 fans. Era la prima volta che una band rock dell’Ovest si esibiva nella Germania dell’Est. Il gruppo ottenne un buon successo anche in Europa. Con brani composti da John Lees, come Mocking Bird, Child of the Universe, Poor Man’s Moody Blues e la leggendaria Hymn, la band continuò ad attrarre un seguito fedele di fans nelle scorse cinque decadi.
I cambi di line-up
La crescente disarmonia tra le file della band portò ad un annuncio nel marzo del 1998. Il gruppo si sarebbe preso un anno di stop, segnando la fine dell’originale Barclay James Harvest e i vari membri avrebbero intrapreso dei progetti solisti. John Lees si uní immediatamente all’amico fondatore della BJH, il tastierista Woolly Wolstenholme. Quella che avrebbe messo in piedi con Woolly Wolstenholme, che aveva lasciato il gruppo originale nel 1979, sarebbe stata alla fine la John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest. Con loro Craig Fletcher (basso, vocals) e Kevin Whitehead (batteria). La band fu premiata nel marzo del 2008 con il Lifetime Achievement nell’annuale cerimonia dei Radio Regenbogen Awards. Si tratta dell’equivalente tedesco degli UK BAFTA awards.
L’arrivo di Jez Smith e la band in tour
Nel 2009 Jez Smith si uní alla JLBJH come secondo tastierista. Tristemente, nel dicembre del 2010 Woolly Wolstenholme ebbe una ricaduta di depressione e tragicamente morí.
John Lees annunciò in seguito la propria intenzione di continuare con il gruppo. La release dell’album North avvenne nel 2013 e fu molto ben accolta. Nel 2018 John Lees ricevette il Premio Visionari all’annuale Prog Awards a Londra. Il gruppo continuò a stare in tour per l’Europa. Le loro recenti performance del 2023 hanno registrato il tutto esaurito in UK, Germania, Francia e Svizzera. Inoltre la band pubblicò un album live e un film concerto con un’orchestra di ottanta elementi, Philarmonic!

Con il loro nuovo album Relativity JLBJH hanno messo sul mercato il loro disco più accurato, nel puro spirito della Barclay James Harvest.
Relativity è disponibile in tre formati: uno standard CD edition, un’edizione limitata con box di tre dischi. Il box include un audio disc region free Blu Ray di Stephen W Tayler con un meraviglioso 5.1 Surround Sound mix dell’album. Inoltre un cd aggiuntivo con highlights inedite di un concerto registrato al RosFest, Pennsylvania, Usa nel maggio 2009 con Woolly Wolstenholme. Inclusa una versione limitata 2LP in vinile.

Esoteric Antenna and Cherry Red Records are pleased to announce the release of Relativity, the superb new album from John Lees’ BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST.
Several years in the making, the record is a 78-minute collection of songs loosely based upon the concept of human and cosmic interaction and relationships. Produced by the band and mixed by acclaimed engineer Stephen W Tayler(known for his work with Kate Bush, Rush, Howard Jones, Rupert Hine, Tina Turner and many more), Relativity is a true group effort by John Lees, Craig Fletcher, Jez Smith and Kevin Whitehead and draws upon the fine musical heritage of Barclay James Harvest whilst also being a body of music made for these current times. The result is one of the finest albums by any incarnation of BJH in many years.
A long and successfull career
The music of Barclay James Harvest has endured for over fifty years. Through a series of classic albums, (including the platinum selling Gone to Earth) and memorable concert performances, including a free concert on the steps of the Reichstag, in the heart of the then divided city of Berlin before 175,000 people (the recording of which went straight to No. 1 in Germany and reached number 15 in the UK) and an open-air concert in Berlin’s Treptower Park on July 14th, 1987 in front of an estimated 170,000 fans, the first time that a western rock band had performed an open-air concert in what was then East Germany, the band enjoyed huge success in Europe.
Through songs composed by John Lees such as Mocking Bird, Child of the Universe, Poor Man’s Moody Blues and the legendary Hymn, the band has continued to attract a loyal and dedicated global following over the past five decades.
Increasing disharmony in the ranks of the band led to an announcement in March 1998 that the band would be taking a sabbatical, marking the end of the original Barclay James Harvest, and that the members of the band would be pursuing solo projects.

John Lees immediately teamed up with fellow BJH founder member, keyboardist Woolly Wolstenholme (who had departed the original band in 1979) to form what would eventually become John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest, along with Craig Fletcher (bass, vocals) and Kevin Whitehead (drums). The band was honoured in March 2008 by being bestowed the “Lifetime Achievement” award at the annual Radio Regenbogen Awards (the German equivalent of the UK BAFTA awards).

In 2009 Jez Smith joined JLBJH as a second keyboard player. Sadly, in December 2010 Woolly Wolstenholme’ssuffered a recurrence of a severe depressive condition and he tragically passed away. After some John Lees announced that he intended to continue with the group. The release of the album “North” in 2013 was greeted with praise and in 2018 John Lees received the Visionary award at the annual Prog Awards in London. The band continued to tour Europe, their most recent tour being in 2023 which resulted in sold-out concerts in the UK, Germany, France and Switzerland and a live album and concert film with an 80-piece orchestra, Philharmonic! With their new album, Relativity, JLBJH have delivered their most accomplished album to date and a record which is in the true spirit of Barclay James Harvest.

Relativity is available in three formats; a standard CD edition, a limited 3 disc boxed set edition (which includes a region free Blu-ray audio disc of Stephen W Tayler’s wonderful 5.1 Surround Sound mix of the album and an additional CD of highlights of a previously unreleased concert recorded at RosFest, Pennsylvania, USA in May 2009 featuring the Woolly Wolstenholme) and a limited 2LP gatefold vinyl edition.
