BLACK SUN MASSACRE: L’INTERVISTA DAL CIMITERO

Siamo qui con Davey Love e Orion Morningstar per parlare della loro nuova band, i Black Sun Massacre (noti anche come Black Sun Mass). Entriamo subito nel vivo con una serie di domande sulla band, il suo nome, la sua formazione e la direzione musicale che ha intrapreso.

Intervista ai Black Sun Massacre

Davey, puoi parlarci un po’ della band, di quando e perché avete deciso di formarla e qual è la sua struttura strumentale?

Davey Love: Abbiamo formato i Black Sun Massacre perché la nostra precedente band, i Death Valley Gypsies, aveva fatto il suo corso. Dopo la sfortunata pandemia, la band ha iniziato ad adagiarsi sugli allori e ha smesso di crescere e di esplorare nuovi suoni… Il nostro cantante, Orion, ed io abbiamo sempre avuto la stessa visione, quindi abbiamo deciso di seguire il nostro stile creativo: riff pesanti, horror, occultismo, stoner rock. Il resto della band non condivideva questa passione, quindi abbiamo iniziato a cercare membri con la stessa visione e lo stesso stile creativo. Di recente abbiamo incontrato Michael Brown, un bassista formidabile dei Chrome Serpent, e abbiamo anche un batterista fantastico che vi sveleremo più avanti.

Gli esordi della band

Davey e Orion, potreste parlarci del vostro percorso musicale fino ad ora?

Davey Love: Sono cresciuto in una famiglia di musicisti. Mio nonno suonava la chitarra steel e ha trasmesso a me e a mio fratello l’amore per la musica. Abbiamo formato la nostra prima band, gli American Jam, quando avevo 14 anni. Da allora, ho suonato in molte band rock and roll nella zona della Baia di San Francisco e a Sacramento, in California. Tra queste, Mary Kelly Superstar, Vicious Power, Sonic Love Affair, The Ventilaters e Death Valley Gypsies, solo per citarne alcune. Orion Morningstar: Scrivo e canto da tutta la vita.

Se doveste paragonare il sound della band a un artista, una band o una combinazione di band e artisti, chi sarebbero?

Orion Morningstar: Black Sabbath, Uncle Acid, Electric Wizard, White Zombie, i primi lavori di Alice Cooper, roba dark di quel genere.

La vostra band ha già una forte presenza su Facebook. Come state gestendo la costruzione di una fanbase in quest’era digitale del marketing? Su quali altre piattaforme social si possono trovare i Black Sun Massacre?

Davey Love: Al momento ci stiamo concentrando principalmente sulla musica e sulla creazione della nostra immagine. Stiamo pianificando il lancio di un sito web entro la fine dell’anno e ci potete trovare su Instagram (blacksunmass) e Facebook (Black Sun Massacre). Stiamo pubblicando brevi videoclip di nuovo materiale, solo delle anticipazioni. Siamo molto contenti della velocità con cui sta crescendo la nostra fanbase.

Il nome Black Sun Massacre evoca immagini oscure. Come avete scelto il nome della band?

Davey Love: Abbiamo giocato con parole che avessero un significato per noi. È una direzione più oscura quella che stiamo prendendo, ovviamente.

Orion Morningstar: La cosa strana è che… mentre stavamo pensando al nome, il giorno si è trasformato in notte a causa di un’eclissi… è scattato qualcosa, e ha avuto senso.

I brani preferiti di Davey Love e Orion Morningstar

Per chi vi ascolta per la prima volta, qual è la canzone che ha maggiormente influenzato il vostro sound e che funge anche da perfetta porta d’accesso all’universo musicale dei Black Sun Massacre?

Orion Morningstar: Thelemic Nightmare è davvero fantastica… È un vero tesoro di immagini oscure.

Davey Love: A me piace Blood Witch… Se la suoniamo abbastanza forte, credo che potrebbe resuscitare i morti!

Cosa possiamo aspettarci dalla band in termini di genere musicale? Potrebbe essere veloce e furioso come i Motörhead, cupo e malinconico come i Black Sabbath, o forse il suono grezzo e veloce dei primi Iron Maiden, con due chitarre, una linea di basso incalzante e performance intense e coinvolgenti dal vivo?

Davey Love: Sì, un po’ di tutti e tre…

Orion Morningstar: Per i concerti abbiamo in programma qualcosa di entusiasmante, ma non possiamo ancora rivelarlo… lo “spettacolo” rifletterà il lato oscuro dell’America… beh, del mondo intero.

I progetti futuri dei Black Sun Massacre

Oltre a costruire una base di fan, qual è l’obiettivo principale dei Black Sun Massacre entro la fine del 2026?

Davey Love: Siamo ancora dei neonati per quanto riguarda la nostra nuova visione, anche se suoniamo tutti da decenni. Continuare a costruire la nostra base di fan, fare concerti, registrare, produrre merchandising e entrare in contatto con altre band dello stesso genere.

THE INTERVIEW FROM THE GRAVEYARD

We’re here with Davey Love and Orion Morningstar discussing their new band, Black Sun Massacre (AKA Black Sun Mass). Let’s just dive right into it with a series of questions about the band, its naming, formation and the musical direction it’s headed in.

Davey can you tell us a little bit about the band, when and why you decided to form the band and what the band’s structure is as far as instrumentation?

Davey Love: We formed Black Sun Massacre because our previous band, Death Valley Gypsies had run it’s course. After the lame pandemic the band started getting too comfortable and resisted to grow and explore new sounds… Our singer, Orion and I, always had the same vision, so we decided to follow our creative style—heavy riffs, horror, occult, stoner rock— which the rest of the band wasn’t into, so we began looking for members with the same vision and creative styles. We recently hooked up with Michael Brown, a thunderous bass player from Chrome Serpent. and we have a fantastic drummer that will be later revealed.

Davey and Orion, could you tell us about your own personal musical journeys up to this point?

Davey Love: I grew up in a musical family. My grandfather played steele guitar and taught my brother and I our love for music. We started our first band, American Jam, when I was 14. Since then, I’ve played in many rock and roll bands in and around the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento California. Mary Kelly Superstar, Vicious Power, Sonic Love Affair, The Ventilaters, and Death Valley Gypsies to name a few.

Orion Morningstar: I’ve been writing and singing my entire life.

Davey Love: Right now we are mainly focused on the music and creating our image. We are planning a website launch later in the year, and we can be found on Instagram (blacksunmass) and Facebook (Black Sun Massacre). We are putting out short music video clips of new material; just teasers and we are very happy with the fast pace that our fanbase is growing.

For listeners hearing you for the first time, what is the one song that is highly influential on your overall sound, and also acts as a perfect gateway into the Black Sun Massacre musical universe?

Orion Morningstar: Thelemic Nightmare is a real cool one…It’s a real treasure house of dark images.

Davey Love: I like Blood Witch… If we play it loud enough, I think it could raise the dead!

What can we expect from the band as far as the brand of music you’ll be bringing to your audience, could it be fast and furious like Motorhead, doom and gloom like Black Sabbath, or possibly early Iron Maiden’s raw fast pace sound featuring twin guitars, accompanied by a prominent, galloping bass line, and intense live oriented performances ?

Davey Love: Ya, a little bit of all three…

Orion Morningstar: For the live shows we do have some exciting plans but we can’t reveal them yet… the “show” will reflect the darker side of America… well, and the entire world.

Beyond building a fan base. What is the number one goal of Black Sun Massacre by the end of 2026 ?

Davey Love: We are still newborn babies as far as our new vision goes, even though we all have been playing for decades. Continuing to build or fanbase, live shows, record, merchandise, and to connect with other bands of the style.
