The Making of Foxtrot: come nacque il capolavoro dei Genesis

Foxtrot è il quarto album in studio del gruppo progressive rock inglese Genesis. Fu pubblicato il 17 settembre 1972 su CharismaRecords. L’album fu scritto durante l’estate del 1972. Le sessioni furono caratterizzate da tensioni e disaccordi.
La copertina dell’album, l’ultima disegnata da Paul Whitehead, raffigura una volpe con un vestito rosso. Questo ispirò Peter Gabriel ad acquistare un iconico vestito rosso e una testa di volpe, che aggiunse alle sue presentazioni visive per il tour Foxtrot del 1972.

Foxtrot, pubblicato il 15 settembre 1972, sarebbe stato il primo album dei Genesis a entrare in classifica. Raggiunse la posizione numero 12 nel Regno Unito il 14 ottobre 1972 e rimase nella top 12 per un totale di sette settimane.

Il secondo tour italiano di quell’anno si svolse nell’agosto del 1972. Il 18 agosto, allo Stadio Comunale “Zugni Tauro” di Feltre. Il 19 agosto, al Jolly Club di Ravenna. Il 20 agosto, al Piper 2000 di Vaireggio. Il 21 agosto: al Palasport Bocciofila di Albenga. Il 22 agosto: al Cinema Teatro Alcione di Genova. Fino alla conclusione del tour, il 23 agosto (in una località non specificata). Il tour italiano conteneva materiale che sarebbe poi stato pubblicato su Foxtrot, come “Watcher of the Skies” e “Canned Utility and the Coastliners”.

Foxtrot: pietra miliare del progrressive rock

Get Them Out By Friday

“Get Them Out By Friday”, la musica e i testi sono attribuiti a tutti e cinque i membri della band.
Sebbene in realtà il testo sia stato scritto da Peter Gabriel e racconti una storia di avidità aziendale e critica sociale nei confronti dei proprietari terrieri, in parte ispirata ai problemi di Peter con il suo padrone di casa all’epoca, e sebbene il testo abbia un elemento fantasy, è anche piuttosto radicato nel mondo reale. “Get Them Out By Friday” è in realtà una mini-opera teatrale, della durata di 8,5 minuti, che presenta personaggi distinti. A cui Peter Gabriel ha assegnato stili vocali diversi per proiettare le caratteristiche di ciascun personaggio.

La storia del brano

La trama si sviluppa dagli anni ’70 a un futuro distopico, il 2012, che include argomenti come il controllo genetico e altri argomenti sgradevoli. La canzone è un potente commento sociale sugli effetti disumanizzanti del capitalismo incontrollato e dello sviluppo urbano, vagamente ispirato a un famigerato proprietario terriero inglese della Londra degli anni ’50 e ’60. “Get Them Out By Friday” è un esempio lampante dello stile rock progressivo dei primi Genesis, caratterizzato da una strumentazione complessa e da voci teatrali.

Canned-Utility and the Coastliners

“Canned-Utility and the Coastliners”, la musica è stata scritta esclusivamente dal tastierista Tony Banks. Steve Hackett ha scritto il testo, con Phil Collins che ha dato il via ad alcune delle idee ritmiche e vocali del brano. La dinamica mini-suite inizia con il tocco folk delle chitarre acustiche, per poi evolversi in una potente jam prog-rock. Il tema è l’inutilità del potere umano.

“Horizons”: un breve e splendido assolo di chitarra di Steve Hackett, ispirato a Bach, funge da intermezzo strumentale prima dell’epico finale dell’album.

Supper’s Ready

“Suppers Ready”, il capolavoro dei Genesis, dura ventitré minuti ed è suddiviso in sette parti: (1) Lovers Leap, (2) The Guaranteed Eternal Sanctuary Man, (3) Ikhnaton And Itsacon and Their Band Of Merry Men, (4) How Dare I Be So Beautiful, (5) Willow Farm, (6) Apocalypse in 9/8 (con la partecipazione dei deliziosi talenti di Gable Ratchet), (7) As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs (Aching Men’s Feet). “Suppers Ready” è un capolavoro musicale assoluto, un viaggio sconfinato attraverso visioni apocalittiche e rinascita spirituale, ricco di vari stili musicali e della voce drammatica di Peter Gabriel. È ampiamente considerato il coronamento dei Genesis.

The Making of Foxtrot by Genesis

Foxtrot is the fourth studio album by the English progressive rock band Genesis. It was released on 17th September 1972, on Charisma
Records. The album was written over the summer of 1972. Relative essions were prone to tensions and disagreements.
The album’s cover, the final one designed by Paul Whitehead, features, a fox wearing a red dress. Which inspired Peter Gabriel to acquire an iconic red dress and fox head, which he added to his touring visual presentations for the 1972 Foxtrot tour. Foxtrot released on 15th September 1972, would be the first Genesis album to chart. It peaked at number 12 in the UK on the 14th October 1972 and stayed in the top 12 for a total of seven weeks.

The big success in Italy

While in Italy, Foxtrot was warmly received, where it reached number 15 on the Italian album charts. Genesis would tour Italy twice in 1972. The first tour took place in April of 1972, with dates that included: appearances on the: 15th of April: at the Hit Parade Club, in Lugo.

16th of April: at the Super Tivoli, in Travagliato. 17 of April: at the Palasport, in Siena. 18th April: at the Piper Club, in Rome. The second tour of Italy that year occurred in August of 1972. On the 18th August, at Stadio Comunale, “Zugni Tauro”, Feltre. The 19th August at the Jolly Club, in Ravenna. The 20th August at the Piper 2000, in Vaireggio. Then the 21st August: At the Bocciofila Palasport, Albenga. The 22nd August: at the Cinema Teatro Alcione, in Genoa. Till wrapping up the tour on the 23rd of August (at an unspecified location.) The Italian tour featured material that would later be released on Foxtrot. Such as “Watcher of the Skies” and “Canned Utility and the Coastliners”.

The music for “Watcher of the Skies”, was written by all five Genesis members.While the lyrics were specifically written by Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, who were inspired by the deserted landscape of the airfield where they were rehearsing, and the science fiction novel “Childhood’s End” by Arthur C. Clarke.

“Time Table”, a piano led song of antiquity, is an understated piece of music composed by Tony Bank, who also wrote the lyrics
along with Mike Rutherford. They were inspired on this one, by the vision of an alien observer looking at an empty Earth, along with Arthur C. Clarke’s novel “Childhood’s End”.

Get Them Out By Friday

Get Them Out By Friday”, music and lyrics are credited to all five members of the band. Although in actuality the lyrics were written by Peter Gabriel, and tell a story of corporate greed and social criticism of landlords, partially inspired by Peter’s problems with his own landlord at that time, and although the lyrics have a fantasy element to them, they are quite rooted in the real world as well.

The story of the track

“Get Them Out By Friday” is actually a mini-play, that’s 8.5 minutes long, and features distinct characters. To which Peter Gabriel, assigned different vocal styles to project each character’s characteristics. The storyline progresses from the then 1970’s to a dystopian future 2012, that features such things as genetic control and other icky subjects. The song is a powerful social commentary on the dehumanizing effects of unchecked capitalism and urban development, that’s loosely based on a notorious English landlord in 1950’s and 1960’s London. “Get Them Out By Friday” is a primary example of early Genesis’s progressive rock style, that featured intricate instrumentation and theatrical vocals.

Canned-utility and coastliners

Canned-Utility and the Coastliners”, music was written solely by keyboardist Tony Banks. While Steve Hackett wrote the lyrics. With Phil Collins initiating some of the rhythmic and vocal ideas on the song. The dynamic mini-suite starts with the folk feel of acoustic guitars, building into a powerful prog-rock jam. Whose theme is the futility of human power.

Horizons

“Horizons”: a brief beautiful guitar solo from Steve Hackett, inspired by Bach, serves as an instrumental interlude before the album’s epic finale.

Supper’s Ready

“Suppers Ready”, Genesis’s magnum opus is twenty three minute long and subdivided into a seven parts (1) Lovers

It is widely considered Genesis’s crowning achievement.

Peter Gabriel wrote the lyrics for ‘Suppers Ready’, and
although writing credits were officially credited to the whole band. Peter Gabriel authored most or all of the lyrical content. Tony Banks composed the music. Phil Collins contributed to the arrangements and segues between sections. While Steve and Mike contributed on their respective instruments.

Peter’s use of elaborate costumes, including the iconic fox dress mentioned in Suppers Ready, and his stage presence during the accompanying tour brought a new level of theatricality to Genesis and to rock music in general. While also giving Genesis their first taste of significant commercial success.
The album’s ambitious scope, complex musicianship, and innovative structure, particularly the track “Suppers Ready”, has influenced countless progressive rock bands and remains a benchmark for the progressive rock genre. It is frequently included in lists of the greatest progressive rock albums of all times, and rightfully deserves to be.
