L’Intervista a Chris DiGirolamo

Quando hai cominciato ad interessarti di musica per la prima volta?
Suono la batteria da quando avevo cinque anni. Ora ne ho cinquanta così posso dire che la musica è stata con me per ben quarantacinque anni. Ho scelto le drums perché ricordo che mi sembravano molto cool. Fu amore a prima vista senza mezzi termini. E’ stato proprio così. Inoltre mia madre da ragazzino mi portava sempre a vedere concerti. Abbiamo visto Buddy Rich, The Spinners, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald e tanti altri. Ciò che ho notato mentre mi addentravo nei miei anni da teenagers, è stato che la musica e la batteria indiscutibilmente mi hanno permesso di star lontano dalla cattiva strada. Sono cresciuto con cinque buoni amici con i quali suonavamo insieme e tre suonavano la batteria. Sono diventati tutti eroinomani. Io in qualche modo sono sfuggito a tutto questo. Non voglio dire che non abbia avuto anch’io i miei demoni, ma la batteria e il frequentare il Berklee College of Music mi hanno salvato la vita. La batteria è ancora decisamente terapeutica per me. Posso chiudermi nella mia stanza con la batteria per ore e distaccarmi dall’assurdità della vita. Alcuni giorni suono come una palla da booling che rotola giù per le scale ma tutti abbiamo giornate no. Dopo essermi diplomato alla High School come dicevo ho frequentato il Berklee College of Music. Quando l’ho lasciato mi è stato offerto un lavoro di assistente ingegnere ai famosi studi di registrazioni Systems Two a Brooklyn NY. Ho lavorato con batteristi così famosi in quel periodo. Chris e la nascita di Two For The Show

Da lì ho sono passato agli studi Record Plant a Sausalido in California. Cosa che mi ha dato l’opportunità di lavorare con Santana, Pearl Jam e moltissimi altri grandi artisti della West Coast. Ho lasciato quel posto dopo il terremoto di San Francisco del 1989 nel quale mi sono trovato proprio nel bel mezzo. Quindi sono tornato di corsa a NY (ride). Da lì non ho mai lasciato la musica, l’ho insegnata, l’ho suonata, l’ho pubblicizzata. Senza alcun dubbio, la musica è il centro della mia vita!
La nascita di Two For The Show
Quando e partita la tua avventura con Two for the Show?
Two for the Show è nata casualmente. Per svariati anni (2000/2006) pubblicavo una rubrica mensile su una rivista di musica (The Music Paper). Un giorno, era il primo Febbraio 2006, ricevetti una telefonata da un tizio che mi chiese: “posso parlare con Chris?”. Gli risposi che ero io allora lui mi disse: “Mi sei stato raccomandato come PR”. Io non ero un PR, scrivevo solo come freelance a basso livello. Ora torniamo a me. Non ero al posto giusto. Non avevo lavoro, ero depresso e sul mio conto in banca c’erano 37 cents. Questa è la verità. Ma riprendiamo con la telefonata. In cinque secondi non so perché ma risposi si’, sono un PR. Quel tizio era il bassista Lyle Atkinson. Riattaccai senza avere la minima idea della situazione in cui mi ero infilato. Andai in libreria e acquistai il libro “Publicity for Dummies”. Il 14 febbraio prossimo fa diciotto anni che sono in questo business, tutto per una raccomandazione di lavoro errata!

Il Segreto del suo successo

Tu come dicevi hai lavorato con tantissimi brillanti musicisti. Quali sono i tuoi più bei ricordi di loro?
Io dico sempre a famiglia ed amici che spero di vivere a lungo ma che in ogni modo, se me ne andassi domani, non potrei rimpiangere nemmeno un attimo della mia vita. Ho fatto così tante favolose esperienze di musica live, così tante che non ve le posso raccontare tutte. Ecco, tutto queste esperienze sono il mio più bel ricordo.
C’è un artista con il quale ti piacerebbe lavorare?
Se dovessi sceglierne uno al momento ti direi che sono sempre stato “intorno” alla band di Santana. Naturalmente lavorando con la moglie di Carlos, quella è la mia posizione. Ecco, vorrei essere il pubblicitario di Santana a tutto tondo.
Qual è il tuo genere musicale preferito e perché?
Mi piacere veramente TUTTO! Sono molto aperto. Posso dirti di aver visto i Grateful Dead dal vivo più di 300 volte quindi la jam music è sempre stata una parte della mia vita. Poi naturalmente il jazz.

Cosa rende il tuo lavoro così di successo? Qual è il tuo segreto?
Bella domanda! Il giorno in cui abbiamo ufficialmente cominciato a lavorare sul serio ho pensato alcune cose. Per prima cosa: devi lavorare sempre più degli altri. Seconda cosa: fai sempre per il tuo artista quello che hai detto che farai, anche se il risultato non sarà quello che speravi. Terza cosa: Sii sempre onesto. E’ stato questo il segreto.

Cosa dicono di Chris

A che cosa stai lavorando al momento?
Stiamo lavorando con il bravissimo bassista Mark Egan e con due grandiosi giovani sassofonisti, Hiruy Tiife e Brent Birckhead. Abbiamo appena siglato un contratto anche con il grandioso batterista Larnell Lewis. Quindi un sacco di buona musica…

Qual è stato il più bel commento che un musicista ha fatto sul tuo conto?
E’ facile. I più belli sono stati questi due che ti dico perché si riferiscono al mio modo di essere. Il primo è di Lenny White: “Due cose buone riguardo il lavorare con Chris DiGirolamo. Il primo è che lui conosce questo business meglio di chiunque altro ed essendo un musicista comprende il rapporto tra il musicista e la stampa. Il secondo è che lui è una persona migliore delle altre”. Il secondo commento è del compianto Ellis Marsalis: “Chris DiGirolamo è un pubblicitario di prim’ordine e nel contempo ha mantenuto intatta la sua anima. Grazie Chris per essere ciò che sei!”.

Interview to Chris DiGirolamo

When did you first get into music?
I have played drums since I am five years old. I am 50 now, so the music has been there for forty-five years. As far as choosing the drums, I just remember it being “cool” looking to me. It was a love at first site without ques-on. That was really it. My mom also always took me to shows as a young one. We saw Buddy Rich, The Spinners, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and so many more etc. What I noticed as I matured into my teens is that music, and drums undeniably allowed me to avoid a bad path. I grew up with five good friends. We played music together. Three were drums. They all became heroin addicts. Somehow, I escaped it all. That’s not to say I have not had my demons, but the drums and going to Berklee College of Music saved my life. The drums are still downright therapeutic for me. I could go in my drum room for hours and detach from the absurdity of life. Some days I sound like a bowling ball going down a staircase, but we all have those days. After graduating high school, I attended Berklee College of Music. When I left Berklee, I was offered an assistant engineering job at the famed Systems Two recording studio in Brooklyn, NY. I worked with so many famous drummers on that job. Marvin “Smitty” Smith, Dennis Chambers, Adam Nussbaum, so many.

When Chris founded Two For The Show

From there I worked at the Record Plant in Sausalito, California, which gave me the opportunity to work Santana, Pearl Jam, and so many other great west coast artists. I left there after the “89” San Francisco Earthquake, which I was right in the middle of. So, I came back to New York quickly (laughs). From there is has always been music. Teaching it, playing it, or promoting it. It is hands down the center of my life.
When did your start your adventure with Two for the Show?
Two for the Show was born by accident. For several years (2000-2006) I published a monthly drum column in a music magazine (The Music Paper). One day it was Feb 1st, 2006. I received a call from a man who said “Can I speak to Chris?” I told him he was. He goes to say “You came recommended to me as a publicist. I wasn’t a publicist I was just doing free lance writing on a very small level.
Now take step back to me. I was not in a good place. I was out of work, depressed, and my checking account had 37 cents in it. That is the truth. Back to the call. So in a 5 secind moment I don’t know why but I said yes I’m a publicist. That man was bassist Lyle Atkinson. I hung up had no idea what I just got myself involved in. I went immediately to the bookstore and bought “Publicity for Dummies”. This February 14h we are in business 18 years. All from a mistaken job recommendation.

Working with Carlos Santana

You worked with so many brilliant musicians. What are your best memories about them?
I hope I live a long life, however I always say to family and friends. If I was gone tomorrow I couldn’t complain about this life one bit. I have had so many amazing live music experiences, its too much to say. My best memory is all of them.
Is there an artist you would like to work with and it hasn’t happened yet?
Well if I had to pick right now. I have always been AROUND the band Santana. Working with Carlos’ wife of course, I am in that position. I would love to take over Santana’s full publicity.
What’s your fav kind of music and why?
Really EVERYTHING. My ear is just open. I can tell you I have seen the Grateful Dead over 300 times. So jam music has always been part of my life. And of course jazz.

The secret of his success

What makes you so successful in your work? What is your secret?
Great question. The day we officially started something just hit me. I thought…
Always work harder than the other.
Always do what you say you are going to do for the artist. Even if the result isnt what we
wanted.
Be honest always!
