I Balaam and the Angel ritornano sul palcoscenico con The Almighty e…la musica esplode! La band britannica formata da James Morris (chitarra), Mark Morris (basso e voce) e Des Morris (batteria) venuta alla ribalta nel 1984 e arrivata al successo con brani come New Kind of Love, I’ll Show You something Special and I Love The Things You Do To Me celebra i 40 anni di attività. Lo fa on stage davanti al pubblico che li ama e li segue da una vita. Il loro mix di psichedelia, dark e goth li ha resi una delle realtà più interessanti del panorama musicale dell’epoca così come la loro carica e il loro entusiasmo dal vivo. Ed è proprio ad uno show energetico e pieno di buona musica che i loro fans assisteranno nei giorni prossimi. Si tratta di tre imperdibili show.
Il 30 Novembre i Balaam and the Angel saranno infatti a Glasgow ai Barrowlands, l’1 Dicembre a Manchester allo 02 Academy e il 2 a Londra (Kentish Town Forum). Di tutto questo e di altro ancora ci ha parlato Jim Morris chitarrista eclettico, originale e stylish. In particolare il musicista ci ha annunciato la prossima uscita di un nuovo EP dei Balaam and the Angel…
Intervista a Jim Morris dei Balaam and the Angel
Tanto per cominciare, hai un’idea anche approssimativa di quando uscirà il nuovo album della band?
Non c’è ancora una data certa per la pubblicazione delle nuove registrazioni ma dato che le canzoni sono già pronte, direi che mi piacerebbe che il cd uscisse verso la fine della prossima primavera. Abbiamo ancora tante altre faccende da sbrigare, tipo i videoclip, l’artwork, la promozione, i tour…). Quindi la data finale di pubblicazione dipenderà dalla nostra abilità di sviluppare e approvare tutto quello che abbiamo da fare.
Il nuovo EP conterrà quattro pezzi. Si tratta di brani nuovi o di canzoni che avevate già pronte?
Quale parte di qualsiasi processo creativo di songwriting, non puoi che aspettarti che ci sia un riaffiorare, o un nuovo modo di immaginare, idee che erano state concepite in passato. Queste insieme a idee e concetti nuovi. Le vecchie idee possono fare da base di partenza per completare il nuovo materiale e certamente abbiamo guardato indietro, così come abbiamo guardato in avanti, nello scrivere i nostri nuovi pezzi. In ogni caso quello che abbiamo registrato è un set di quattro canzoni. Sono track totalmente nuove nel loro approccio a qualsiasi delle idee che le hanno ispirate, sia per quanto riguarda le lyrics che musicalmente. Posso dire che siamo davvero soddisfatti del risultato.
Il sound del nuovo EP e i 40 anni dalla release di World of Light
Chi sono i principali compositori dei nuovi pezzi?
Le canzoni dei Balaam and the Angel sono da sempre una combinazione degli input da parte di tutti e tre noi quindi è nostra la responsabilità come compositori.
Il nuovo EP celebra i 40 anni dalla release di World of Light il vostro primo EP su etichetta Chapter 22 Records..
L’EP World of Light cattura una parte molto speciale del nostro sound del 1984. Era una sorta di psichedelia dark che lo rendeva davvero unico rispetto a qualunque cosa che esisteva all’epoca. Certamente eravamo molto avventurosi nell’esplorare delle combinazioni strumentali (includendo registratori, rintocchi, campanelli.. Tutto questo era ispirato dal lavoro di acts come ad esempio i Psychic Tv. Il risultato è che ognuno dei brani è sonicamente differente. E’ una collezione di pezzi che mi piace ancora molto ascoltare. Come band durante il nostro set scegliamo ancora di suonare del materiale che viene dal quel periodo della nostra carriera. Insomma, si tratta di musica che funziona ancora bene dopo 40 anni.
Le radici musicali dei Balaam and the Angel
Quaranta anni sono un periodo molto lungo. Adesso state cercando di comporre musica diversa o siete ancora attaccati alle vostre radici musicali?
E’ vero. Quaranta anni sono proprio un sacco di tempo! Sono molto orgoglioso del fatto che io e i miei fratelli lavoriamo ancora insieme e abbiamo un’audience che vuole vederci suonare, ci supporta con il suo feedback positivo e continua ad interessarsi a ciò che facciamo. Noi abbiamo ancora quel tipo di curiosità e di entusiasmo che ci ha incoraggiato all’inizio a formare la band. Il ritorno a comporre della nuova musica ha rivelato che abbiamo davvero qualcosa per contribuire alla tanta musica che gira in questo periodo. Non ci siamo mai fermati quando si è trattato di cercare di esplorare nuovi approcci. Da qui le varie fasi con differenti sound che le persone possono associare al nostro nome. Ma insieme a questo c’è sempre stata una parte di quello che facciamo che è rimasta constante e che riflette le nostre influenze originarie legate all’esplosione del punk alla fine degli anni ‘70. Come risultato nel nostro lavoro c’è un’attitudine di cui ti accorgi ascoltando la nostra musica e assistendo alle nostre performance e che rimarrà sempre un’aspetto importante del nostro sound.
Un minitour che si annuncia strepitoso
Domani comincerete una serie di showcase. Cosa potete dirci al riguardo?
Personalmente sono davvero esaltato all’idea di questi concerti con The Almighty. Penso che la combinazione di queste due band sia una perfetta miscela e il fatto che i biglietti per gli shows abbiano venduto così bene dimostra che il pubblico la pensa alla stesso modo. Sarà grandioso rivisitare i Barrowlands di Glasgow e The Forum Kentish Town a Londra. Questi sono due locali che sono stati scenario delle nostre migliori esibizioni. Io sono un tipo di performer da “big stage” così non vedo l’ora di potermi esibire su questi grandi palcoscenici durante le tre serate del nostro minitour.
Il futuro della band di Jim, Mark e Des Morris
Nel corso di questi concerti presenterete anche due nuovi pezzi. E’ stato facile sceglierli all’interno della tracklist del vostro nuovo EP?
Per sceglierli abbiamo dovuto considerare quali di questi si adattassero meglio al set dello show. Ma avremmo potuto semplicemente suonare una qualunque delle quattro tracks che stiamo per pubblicare.
Ci siamo divertiti tantissimo ad inciderle e i risultati finali sono favolosi. Non ho dubbi che al nostro pubblico piaceranno. Quando avranno la possibilità di ascoltarle, ce lo sapremo ridire!
Back on stage with The Almighty
Balaam and the Angel are back on stage and… the music blasts! The British band formed by James Morris (guitar), Mark Morris (bass and vocals) and Des Morris (drums) came into the limelight in 1984 and became successful with songs such as New Kind of Love, I’ll show you something Special and I love the Things you do to me celebrates forty years of activity and does so on stage in front of the public who has loved them and followed them all their lives. Their magical mix of psychedelia, dark and goth made them one of the most interesting bands of the musical scene of that time as well as their energy and enthusiasm during their live performances. And it’s an energetic show full of very good music that their fans will attend in the next few days during three unmissable shows. On November 30th Balaam and the Angel will be in Glasgow (Barrowlands), on December 1st in Manchester at the 02 Academy and on the 2nd in London (Kentish Town Forum). Jim Morris, eclectic, original and stylish guitarist, talked to us about all this and more.
Interview with Jim Morris
Do you aprox have any idea about the date of the release of the new recordings?
There is no firm date for the release of the new recordings but given the readiness of the tracks I would like to think that it will some time towards the end of the spring. We do have a lot of additional things to sort out (video, art work, promotion, touring etc) so the final date will depend on our ability to develop and approve some of these things
The new ep will include four tracks. Are these new songs or songs you had written before?
As part of any creative/song writing process you may expect there to be a resurfacing, or reimaging, of ideas that you had previously created alongside some brand new concepts and ideas. Old ideas can be a launch pad for complete new material and certainly we did look backwards as well as forwards in writing the new songs. However what we have record is a set of four songs that are totally new in their approach, both lyrically and musically, to any of the ideas that inspired them. We are very pleased with the results.
The sound of the new EP and 40 years of World of Light
Who are the main composers?
Balaam And The Angel songs are always a combination of the input from all three brothers so we all take responsibility as the composers.
The new ep will celebrate forty years since the release of your 4track Ep on Chapter 22 Records (World of Light). Looking back at that music what is your opinion nowadays?
The World Of Light EP captured a very special part of the sound that we were making in 1984. It was a sort of dark psychedelia that made it very unique to anything else that existed at the time. We were certainly very adventurous in our exploration of instrumental combinations (to include recorder, glockenspiels, sleigh bells etc) which was inspired by the work of acts like Psychic TV. As a result each one of the four tracks is sonically different. It is a collection of songs that I still enjoy listening to and, as a band, we still choose to play with our set of material from other era’s of our career. So music that still work well 40 years on.
The musical roots of the band
Forty years is such a lot of time. Are your trying to compose very different music or a re you still attached to your musical roots?
Forty years IS a long time. I am very proud that me and my brothers are still working together and have an audience that wants to see us play and support us through their positive feedback and continued interest in what we do. We still have the kind of curiosity and enthusiasm that encouraged us to start the band in the first place and the return to some creation of new music has revealed that we do have something to contribute to the vast amount of music that is made available to us in this day and age. We have never stood still in trying to explore new approaches (hence the various phases of sound that people may associate with us) but somewhere within that there has always been a part of what we do that has remained constant and reflects our initial influences which is rooted in the explosion of Punk in the late 1970’s. As a result there is an attitude to what we do that you can pick up in our music and see in our performances that will always be an aspect of our sound.
An exciting minitour with The Almighty
On the 30th November you will start a mini tour. What are your feelings about it?
Personally I am totally hyped up about the forthcoming shows with The Almighty. I think that the combination of the two bands is a perfect blend and the fact that tickets for the shows have sold so well demonstrates that audiences feel the same. It will be great to revisit Glasgow Barrowlands and The Forum Kentish Town again. They are venues that hold some very special memories for me and were the scene of some of our greatest shows. I am a “big stage” kind of performer so I am really looking forward to strutting my stuff on these larger stages over the three night of the mini tour.
The future of the band
During these concerts you will also be performing two of the new tracks. Was it easy to choose them among the new ep tracklist?
We did have to consider which ones might fit best in the set for the shows but we would happily have played any of the four tracks that we are due to release. We really had a blast recording them and the end results are amazing. I have no doubt that people will enjoy them as, and when, they get the chance to hear them so let’s see eh ?
