Gemini di Anthony Phillips: l’album di un musicista nella categoria degli eletti – It./Eng Version

Gemini il nuovo album per pianoforte di Anthony Phillips, maestro della chitarra dodici corde ed ispirato pianista e sperimentatore, è uscito lo scorso Aprile e se siete tra i suoi estimatori o leggete con attenzione Backdigit lo sapete già. Come pure sapete che il titolo viene dal pezzo Gemini che Anthony ha scritto nel 2018 e che la famosa pianista Martha Argerich ha suonato in prima mondiale sempre nel 2018 a Barcelona.

Che altro sapete già? Che era dai tempi di Soirèè del 1999 che Phillips non incideva più un album per solo pianoforte e che Gemini è stato registrato tra l’ottobre 2022 e l’ottobre 2025 agli Englewood Studios di Londra, che è un doppio album e che contiene ben 44 pezzi tutti strumentali.

Sapete di certo altre cento cose su Gemini delle quali perciò non parlerò. Ciò su cui mi volevo soffermare infatti è Anthony Phillips l’uomo e l’artista. Conosco e frequento l’ambiente della musica praticamente da tutta la vita e mi sono resa conto fin da subito che molto spesso l’uomo e il musicista sono due cose diverse e nettamente separate.

Una volta feci osservare ad un musicista molto famoso di cui non starò qui a fare il nome, che il lavoro degli artisti si distingue da quello di tutti gli altri perché viene dal cuore e dall’ispirazione. Lui mi spiazzò rispondendomi che la mia era una visione estremamente idealizzata e molto poetica dei fatti nudi e crudi e che in realtà il lavoro di un artista viene fuori principalmente dalla tecnica, dalla professionalità. Oltre che dallo spaccarsi la testa per cercare quel riff e quel motivo che spinge il pubblico a comprare poi il disco.

Perché chi sta in questo business cerca principalmente di fare soldi, per tirare a campare e ove possibile anche agiatamente. Andando avanti con il tempo mi resi conto che aveva ragione e che questo è il presupposto dalla quale partono la maggior parte dei musicisti. Occhio però perché ho detto la maggior parte, che non vuol dire tutti. Anthony Phillips, infatti, appartiene alla categoria degli eletti, quelli per cui la vita e l’arte si fondono perfettamente e senza discrepanze ed è sempre stato così. 

Lui è un artista “puro” che non cambia faccia ed atteggiamento quando entra in studio rispetto a quando va in libreria a fare shopping (ama molto leggere libri di argomenti diversi: classici, sport, poesia, gialli…). Anthony Phillips non è un’artista per metà della giornata e per l’altra è qualunque altra cosa, lui è un artista 24 ore al giorno anche quando dorme, quando mangia e quando guarda la tv (spesso lo fa seduto sul sofà con una delle sue fide chitarre accanto così che se dovesse arrivare l’ispirazione…). 

Gemini non è nato per essere un album, lo è diventato man mano che Anthony raccoglieva casualmente idee, pensieri, ispirazioni. E questo accadeva quando meno se lo aspettava, in qualunque momento del giorno o della notte.

Il dono di Anthony Phillips per la musica è una cosa seria, autentica e i suoi fans più accaniti lo sanno, se lo immaginano e lo amano per questo. Un po’ come Monet e Renoir i cui sketch prendevano forma e colore senza che loro avessero pianificato nulla e in realtà, anche Ant procede spinto dalla naturale ispirazione. Quando la segue si perde in essa alle volte senza rendersene nemmeno conto. E quando gli fai notare che in dieci minuti ha composto un pezzo di musica memorabile lui si schernisce, ti guarda incredulo, la sua umiltà e modestia sono pari alla sua bravura e al suo talento. 

Se non lo conoscete ancora bene vi consiglio vivamente di ascoltare Gemini e da lì addentrarsi nel suo mondo approfondendo con gli altri due album incisi per pianoforte, Soirèè del quale abbiamo già  accennato e Ivory Moon  del 1986 nato da un progetto teatrale, per poi passare ai suoi favolosi album per chitarra, tra i quali il relativamente recente Strings of Light del 2019 o Field Day del 2005. 

Ma Anthony Phillips è tutto questo ed altro ancora. Nella sua discografia troverete colonne sonore cinematografiche, televisive e library music, pensate ad esempio, tanto per citarne alcune, alla serie Missing Links e alle colonne sonore delle famose serie televisive inglesi Survival e Natural World. E poi album soft rock eleganti come Wise After the Event del 1978, Sides del ’79 o Invisible Men del 1983. Quindi il capolavoro Slow Dance del 1990 che molti tra gli ammiratori più attenti di Phillips considerano uno dei suoi lavori migliori o 1984 del 1981, un disco di musica elettronica dal sapore fortemenete cinematic di grande livello, poi musica classica moderna suonata da una grande orchestra. Come il ‘gioiellino’ Seventh Heaven del 2012. 

Per andare a ritroso nella sua vasta produzione io personalmente dopo Gemini mi tufferei nelle note armoniose e magiche di The Golden Hour del 2024. Anthony Phillips e la sua musica sono un tutt’uno e la musica che lui compone è il suo mondo quotidiano, entrarci lo sanno i suoi fans di sempre, è un privilegio. E se è vero come diceva Shakespeare che il vero scopo dell’arte è di dar forma alla vita Anthony Phillips da sempre assolve perfettamente al suo compito dando forma alle emozioni e traducendole in musica permettendo così a tutti di viverle e condividerle.  

Gemini, the new piano album by Anthony Phillips, a master of the twelve-string guitar and an inspired pianist and experimenter, was released last April, and if you’re one of his fans or a close reader of Backdigit, you already know that. You also know that the title comes from the piece “Gemini,” which Anthony wrote in 2018 and which renowned pianist Martha Argerich performed in its world premiere that same year in Barcelona. What else do you already know? That Phillips hadn’t recorded a solo piano album since 1999’s Soirèè, and that Gemini was recorded between October 2022 and October 2025 at Englewood Studios in London. That it’s a double album and contains 44 instrumental pieces.

You probably know a hundred other things about Gemini, which I won’t go into here. What I wanted to focus on, in fact, is Anthony Phillips, the man and the artist. I’ve known and been involved in the music world practically my entire life, and I realized early on that the man and the musician are often two different and clearly separate things. I once remarked to a very famous musician, whose name I won’t mention here, that the work of artists stands out from everyone else’s because it comes from the heart and inspiration. He shocked me by replying that my vision was extremely idealized and poetic of the bare facts, and that in reality, an artist’s work emerges primarily from technique, professionalism, and racking one’s brains to find that riff and that tune that drives the public to buy the record.

Because those in this business are primarily trying to make money, cash to get by, and, where possible, do so comfortably. As time went by, I realized that my friend was right, and that this is the assumption from which most musicians start. But be careful, because I said “the majority,” which doesn’t mean all. Anthony Phillips, in fact, belongs to the Chosen, those for whom life and art blend seamlessly and seamlessly, and it always has been that way.

He is a “pure” artist whose face and attitude don’t change when he enters the studio compared to when he goes shopping at the bookstore (he loves reading books on a variety of subjects: classics, sports, poetry, detective stories, etc.). Anthony Phillips isn’t an artist half the time and anything else the other half. He’s an artist 24/7, even when he sleeps, eats, and watches TV (often sitting on the sofa with one of his trusty guitars nearby, so that if inspiration strikes…).

Gemini wasn’t born as an album; it became one as Anthony randomly collected ideas, thoughts, and inspirations, and this happened when he least expected it, at any time of the day or night.

Anthony Phillips’ gift for music is a serious, authentic thing, and his most ardent fans know it, imagine it, and love him for it. A bit like Monet and Renoir, whose sketches took shape and color without them actually planning anything, Ant also proceeds driven by natural inspiration, and when he follows it, he gets lost in it, sometimes without even realizing it. And when you point out that in ten minutes he’s composed a memorable piece of music, he scoffs and looks at you in disbelief.

His humility and modesty are equal to his skill and talent. If you’re not yet familiar with him, I highly recommend listening to Gemini and then delving deeper into his world with his other two piano albums: Soirèè, which we’ve already mentioned, and Ivory Moon from 1986, born out of a theater project. This will then lead to his fabulous guitar albums, including the relatively recent Strings of Light from 2019 and Field Day from 2005.

But Anthony Phillips is all this and more. His discography features film and television soundtracks and library music, including, to name a few, the series Missing Links and the soundtracks to the popular British TV series Survival and Natural World. He also boasts elegant soft rock albums like 1978’s Wise After the Event, 1979’s Sides, and 1983’s Invisible Men. He also includes the 1990 masterpiece Slow Dance, which many of Phillips’s most avid fans consider one of his finest works, and 1981’s 1984, a highly cinematic electronic album. And then modern classical music played by a great orchestra, like the 2012 gem Seventh Heaven.

To delve back through his vast output, after Gemini, I would personally dive into the harmonious and magical notes of 2024’s The Golden Hour. Anthony Phillips and his music are one, and the music he composes is his everyday world. Entering it, his lifelong fans know, is a privilege. And if it’s true, as Shakespeare said, that the profound purpose of art is to shape life, Anthony Phillips has always fulfilled his task perfectly by giving form to emotions and translating them into music, thus allowing everyone to experience and share them.
