Silver Song è indubbiamente uno dei capolavori del repertorio di Anthony Phillips (LINK), composto insie me a Mike Rutherford, ex compagno nei Genesis e caro amico, e interpretata da Phil Collins (LINK). Ma è forse anche il pezzo più “misterioso”, per come è stato presentato al pubblico, che lega due membri fondatori dei Genesis, Phillips e Rutherford, e uno aggiunto ovvero Phil Collins. Tanto per cominciare occorre dire che Silver Song, una ballad dolce con influenze folk rock, fu il primissimo brano a svelare le doti canore di Collins. Il musicista, infatti, era entrato nei Genesis come batterista e non certo come cantante, ruolo ricoperto all’epoca da Peter Gabriel.

Non a caso Silver Song venne registrata nell’estate del 1974 presso gli Island Studios a Londra, con l’intento di lanciare Phil proprio come cantante solista, al di la della sua militanza nei Genesis. Ma per qualche non chiarito motivo, la cosa non accadde e la casa discografica dell’epoca, la Charisma Records, non lo pubblicò rimandando ad altro momento le ambizioni da cantante di Collins. Appare abbastanza chiaro che l’etichetta discografica volesse mettere in un angolo tutti i progetti solisti dei membri dei Genesis per non oscurare il successo del gruppo.

E’ chiaro che, saputa dell’esistenza di un simile pezzo, che vedeva insieme il talento indiscusso di Anthony Phillips, la partecipazione del bassista dei Genesis Mike Rutherford e Phil Collins come cantante solista, i fans “si misero alla caccia” di Silver Song. Ma per poterselo gidere ed ascoltare ufficialmente, dovettero attendere la prima ristampa di The Geese and the Ghost (2008), l’acclamato debut album solo di Anthony Phillips originariamente uscito nel 1977. In seguito versioni acustiche del pezzo sono contenute in vari demo e nella collezione di album Private Parts & Pieces di Anthony Phillips.

Una curiosità sul pezzo

Se leggerete il testo, vi accorgerete che il brano parla di amicizia, o meglio di due amici che si allontanano con la promessa però di continuare a mantenere il proprio rapporto. Questo si spiega bene se si considera che Phillips scrisse Silver Song nel 1969 dedicandola a John Silver, il primissimo batterista dei Genesis che però decide di lasciare la band per continuare gli studi.

Di sicuro dal punto di vista musicale Silver Song, un brano dalla spiccata melodia che mette in mostra le doti compositore di Anthony Phillips, fondamento dello stile dei primi e più consacrati Genesis, è un ottimo pezzo e un delicato tributo. Da notare anche che in Silver Song Anthony suona sia la sua leggendaria chitarra acustica a 12 corde che l’organo Hammond, il synth.e la batteria. Mentre Phil Collins si è dedicato esclusivamente alla lead vocals, Mike Rutherford ha suonato la chitarra a 6 corde e il basso.

Non dimentichiamo però che negli anni Anthony Phillips, con la sua solita perizia tecnica, registrò svariate demo del brano per trovare quella che lo convincesse completamente. A partire dal settembre del 1969. Una del 1970 lo vede addirittura usare degli effetti alla chitarra che simulavano tromba e trombone. Per qualche motivo, e nonostante gli sforzi di Anthony e Mike, però, il brano non entrò neppure a far parte di The Geese and the Ghost e nemmeno del successivo album di Phillips, Wise After the Event.

Anthony Phillips e Phil Collins insieme anche per Only your Love

Silver Song non fu l’unico pezzo di Anthony Phillips cantato da Phil Collins. Il batterista, infatti, interpretò anche Only Your Love che pubblicizzò durante un radio show nel 1974. Il brano finí poi nella reissue di The Geese and The Ghost del 2015. E’ evidente che i tempi non erano ancora maturi affinché Phil Collins divenisse celebre come cantante.
