Il mondo musicale ha perso il grande talento di Joji Hirota, compositore, batterista, multipercussionista e cantante. Il musicista è scomparso lo scorso 16 settembre all’Ospedale St. Mary di Londra a causa di un’aneurisma della aorta addominale. La moglie era con lui mentre la figlia Kazumi, che ha comunicato per prima pubblicamente la notizia, è stata fino all’ultimo al telefono con il padre non riuscendo a tornare in tempo dagli Stati Uniti. Nato nel 1948 a Otaru, isola ad ovest del Giappone, come pochi altri Joji Hirota è riuscito a portare il fascino della musica orientale a stretto contatto con quella occidentale contribuendo a creare dei piccoli capolavori. Grazie alle sette note ha oltrepassato barriere e mescolato culture, uscendo ben presto dai confini della popolarità giapponese per immergersi nella magia della musica del britannico Anthony Phillips (chitarrista, pianista e compositore membro fondatore dei Genesis), con i quali ha scritto ed inciso ben due album, Missing Links Vol. 3: Time and Tide (1997) e Wildlife (2008).

Sono ben 45 i brani inclusi in Wildlife e richiamano varie parti del mondo, immergendo l’ascoltatore in atmosfere che spaziano dall’Amazzonia al Serengeti. Basta pensare a pezzi come Creatures of the Magic Water, Web of the Spider Monkey, Bears of the Russian Front, per rendersi conto della ricchezza di questo prodotto e della sua notevole qualità interpretativa. Un risultato ottenuto dalla magnifica sintonia tra Anthony Phillips e Joji Hirota. Wildlife fu pubblicato anche in Giappone per la Disk Union e dalla Voiceprint nel resto del mondo.

Il lungo percorso musicale di Joji Hirota

Joji Hirota da giovanissimo ha frequentato la Kyoto Arts University, dove eccelleva nell’esecuzione delle percussioni e in generale degli strumenti della tradizione nipponica. La sua bravura ha trovato ben presto un centro di interesse e stima nel Regno Unito. Non a caso negli anni ’80 il batterista aprí il Live Earth a Londra con la sua formazione Joji Hirota and the Taiko Drummers ed ha contribuito come percussionista e co-compositore alla produzione Macbeth della Royal Shakespeare Company.

L’ensemble è ancora oggi considerato uno dei migliori esempi della cultura musicale giapponese. suonatore del tamburo rituale taiko e del flauto shakuhachi fin dalla tenera età di 11 anni, ha iniziato a comporre la propria musica a soli tredici anni. Si è trattato di un concerto che ha riunito acts molto conosciuti tra i quali la popstar Madonna, trasmesso dalla BBC.

The musician passed away on September 16 at St. Mary’s Hospital in London due to an abdominal aortic aneurysm. His wife was by his side, while his daughter Kazumi—who was the first to publicly announce the news—stayed on the phone with her father until the very end, unable to return from the United States in time. Kazumi and her mother are currently organizing the funeral in London, which they promise will be filled with the magnificent music Joji Hirota composed and performed with such passion throughout his life.

From a very young age, Joji Hirota attended Kyoto Arts University, where he excelled in percussion and traditional Japanese instruments. Notably, in the 1980s, the drummer opened the Live Earth concert in London with his group, Joji Hirota and the Taiko Drummers, and contributed as a percussionist and co-composer to the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of *Macbeth*.

The ensemble is still considered today one of the finest examples of Japanese musical culture. A player of the ritual *taiko* drum and *shakuhachi* flute since the age of eleven, he began composing his own music at just thirteen. Recognized worldwide as a virtuoso on his instruments, he became the musical director of Stomu Yamash’ta’s Red Buddha Theatre in 1972. In 1977, he became the musical director and percussionist for the Lindsay Kemp Dance Company. This prestigious role gave him the opportunity to showcase his talent on stages around the world, with performances in Europe, Canada, Mexico, and South America. He even released an album—*Sahasurara*, issued in 1976 by King Records in Japan—that reflected these diverse experiences. In 1981, he released his second album, *The Wheel of Fortune*.
