Intervista al gruppo A Poet’s Drum: conto alla rovescia per il cd Lost in the Beauty – It./English Version

A Poet’s Drum: un nome che potremmo definire “evocativo” per come suona, ma a dirla tutta la storia di questo gruppo suggerisce ben altro. E’ una storia che parla di perseveranza, resilienza, di quella enorme passione per la musica che, anche quando le cose non vanno nel giusto verso, ti porta ad andare avanti comunque. Basta pensare che A Poet’s Drum è una formazione che arriva dai lontani anni ’80 e che, con alterne vicende e un cambio di line-up, sta per tornare prepotentemente sulle scene con un nuovo album, Lost in the Beauty.

Qui si tratta di profonda amicizia, ma anche e soprattutto di quel talento che ti fa lavorare in modo serio, onesto. Quello che mostri senza abbellimenti da “simil” rockstar e che ti fa apprezzare dal pubblico e dagli addetti ai lavori.

La band, composta da Marko Pejakovic (vocals, chitarra), Nikola Pejakovic (chitarra, accordion, mandolino, backing vocals), Wolfang Bäumer (chitarra solista), Bernd Buchberger (basso) e Marc Turiaux (additional musician alla batteria) è sulla rampa di lancio per l’uscita di un nuovo album, Lost in the Beauty, la cui lavorazione è iniziata nel 2022 per proseguire con le registrazioni l’anno successivo. Diciassette pezzi inediti, tra vecchie demo e idee varie a rendere ancora più interessante il prodotto. Un album davvero desiderato, potremmo dire, dove ogni pezzo trova il suo significato, musicalmente, nella raffinata creatività e nell’alto standard esecutivo. Ma poi ci anche le lyrics da considerare. Parole che toccano l’anima e che si alternano tra l’umano bisogno di sentimenti, dolore per la perdita e speranza in un ambito volutamente autobiografico.

E’ una fortuna che nessun “contrattempo” tra quelli capitati tra la decisione di rimettere in pista A Poet’s Drum e la finalizzazione del nuovo cd siano riusciti a far desistere i membri del gruppo dal loro progetto. Sarebbe stato proprio un peccato non poter ascoltare l’opera di una band che ha resistito a più di qualche scossone. Forte di un legame di grande intensità e di una voglia di fare buona musica che ha sfidato il destino. 

Ecco qualche nota biografica per capire meglio come nasce e come si è sviluppata quella band. I due membri fondatori, Marko e Nikola Pejakovic sono fratelli, originari dell’ex Jugoslavia. Di sicuro devono aver ereditato la loro voglia di suonare dal padre, un musicista jazz piuttosto noto. I fratelli Pejakovic misero in piedi la formazione già nei lontani anni ’80 con Marko impegnato quale maggiore songwriter e il chitarrista Peter Kopf intento a trasformare le sue idee in vere e proprie canzoni. Da questo team verrà fuori nel 1998 l’album Grace. Del mixing si occupò Yogi Lang (il cantante degli RPWL) mettendo a disposizione la sua particolare visione musicale e la sua bravura nella produzione. Inutile dire che anche nel nuovo cd Lost in the Beauty c’è il suo zampino e un notevole apporto artistico e produttivo.  

Il nome di Marc Turiaux, uno dei più dotati ed apprezzati batteristi della scena prog tedesca, se non europea, fu consigliato da un collega. Dopo un paio di meeting per conoscersi meglio, il musicista entrò a far parte del progetto. Da sottolineare che Marc è il batterista degli RPWL, praticamente la più acclamata band di prog/art rock teutonica. A Poet’s Drum ha “frequentato” con i nuovi pezzi i locali più prestigiosi della scena alternative rock nel circuito di Monaco di Baviera in Germania, con una serie di performance live.

Le cose avevano cominciato a marciare bene quando, per motivi famigliari e di salute, il chitarrista Peter è stato costretto ad abbandonare la band. A rimpiazzarlo fu Wolfgang Bäumer. Di sicuro non una faccia nuova, ma un amico dei componenti di Marko e Nikola anche lui, con i quali aveva suonato già più di quaranta anni fa. Con l’inserimento di Peter e il tocco distintivo di Marc alle drums, per A Poet’s Drum la strada sembra ormai spianata e parte il conto alla rovescia per l’attesissimo nuovo album Lost in the Beauty. Ci scommettiamo, un lavoro di grande qualità. 

Pensi che essere buoni amici fin dall’infanzia abbia reso più forte la vostra musicalità, o c’erano anche dei punti negativi?
Penso che quando suoni con degli amici sei più aperto alle critiche e ai nuovi punti di vista. Il che ti fa crescere meglio e più facilmente. Non ci sono stati punti negativi, perché ad ogni prova, anche se c’erano opinioni e discussioni diverse, ci siamo divertiti tantissimo.

State per pubblicare il vostro nuovo cd, che è il secondo dopo Grace, uscito nel 1998. Quanto credi che sia cambiata la vostra musica dall’album di debutto?
Non troppo, forse il suono è in parte più moderno, un po’ più duro e alcuni testi e canzoni sono più cupi. La differenza principale rispetto a Grace è che, invece della batteria programmata, ora viene registrata dal vivo dal nostro batterista Marc Turiaux. Anche il media è cambiato, “Lost in the Beauty” uscirà su doppio vinile invece che su CD.

Sembra che il cantante e produttore Yogi Lang degli RPWL sia stato coinvolto in questo progetto musicale fin dall’inizio. Cosa lo ha portato a lavorare nuovamente con la band per questo nuovo album?
Yogi è un ragazzo eccezionale e lo conosciamo dalla nostra adolescenza. Ci ha aiutato ogni volta che ne avevamo bisogno. Con l’attrezzatura, i suggerimenti per la registrazione, con alcuni consigli musicali e, ultimo ma non meno importante, ha fatto in modo che l’album suonasse alla grande.

Quanto della sua esperienza con RPWL (e altre uscite) pensi che Yogi Lang abbia portato a questa nuova uscita?
Yogi è un grande produttore e sa cosa è possibile portare su un supporto sonoro e cosa no. In parte ha influito sul suono, coordinando frequenze e strumenti, ma non sulla nostra musica e sulle nostre canzoni. Siamo andati nel suo studio con tutte le nostre tracce registrate e Yogi le ha posizionate nella sala d’ascolto virtuale e le ha fatte sembrare perfette per l’uscita del vinile.

Da qualche anno la band aveva interrotto la sua carriera a causa di problemi di salute dei componenti e delle loro famiglie ma voi non avete mai smesso di credere in questo progetto. Perché avete pensato che fosse il momento giusto per pubblicare un nuovo disco? 

Il motivo principale per registrare un album era che volevamo porre fine alle sofferenze a lungo termine dovute ai problemi menzionati e mettere le nostre canzoni preferite su vinile. All’inizio avevamo pianificato solo 8-10 canzoni, ma negli ultimi 2 anni abbiamo scritto così tanto materiale, che con altre quattro canzoni finite, ora ce ne sono 17 nell’album.

Quali sono gli elementi migliori della vostra musica e come li definireste in poche parole? 

È difficile da dire, ma penso che le melodie e alcuni elementi folk (anche dei Balcani) mescolati con il rock di tutti i generi definiscano la nostra musica. Il lavoro preciso degli strumentisti e dei cantanti della band e il loro modo di interpretare le canzoni, creano il suono inconfondibile di A Poet’s Drum.

Marc Turiaux si è unito alla band nel 1999/2000 e ha suonato alcuni concerti dal vivo. Poi vi siete fermati e lui è tornato di recente nella formazione. Avete  sostituito anche il chitarrista. Quali elementi di novità pensi che questi cambiamenti nella line-up abbiano portato alla musica della band? 

Marc Turiaux ha subito introdotto la sua professionalità di musicista. Ci ha portato a un livello più elevato di comprensione di ciò che è possibile. Wolfgang Bäumer alle chitarre ha avuto un approccio totalmente nuovo alle nostre canzoni e ha portato le sue capacità di altissimo livello e ci ha aiutato a far crescere l’album con lui. Peter Kopf, che è stato sostituito a causa di problemi di salute, grazie a Dio ha potuto suonare la chitarra in due canzoni dell’album e questo ha significato molto per noi.

State pianificando un tour per presentare le vostre nuove canzoni?

Al momento abbiamo in programma soltanto un concerto per la release dell’album il prossimo 13 maggio ad Unterschleissheim Gleis 1. Ma abbiamo in mente altri show per il prossimo autunno e inverno. 

A Poet’s Drum: a name we might call “evocative” because of its sound, but truth be told, the history of this group suggests something entirely different. It’s a story of perseverance, resilience, and that enormous passion for music that, even when things aren’t going your way, drives you forward. Just consider that A Poet’s Drum is a band that hails from the distant ’80s and that, despite ups and downs and a lineup change, is about to make a forceful comeback with a new album Lost in the Beauty.

This is about a deep friendship, but also, and above all, about that talent that makes you work seriously and honestly, the kind you show without rock-star embellishments and that makes you appreciated by audiences and industry insiders alike. The band, comprised of Marko Pejakovic (vocals, guitar), Nikola Pejakovic (guitar, accordion, mandolin, backing vocals), Wolfgang Bäumer (lead guitar), Bernd Buchberger (bass), and Marc Turiaux (additional drummer), is readying for the release of a new album, Lost in the Beauty, which began production in 2022 and will continue recording the following year. Seventeen previously unreleased songs, including old demos and various ideas, make the album even more compelling.

A truly coveted album, one might say, where each piece finds its musical meaning in its refined creativity and high standard of performance. But then there are also the lyrics to consider. Words that touch the soul and alternate between the human need for sentiment, grief for loss, and hope in a deliberately autobiographical context. It’s fortunate that none of the “setbacks” that occurred between the decision to get A Poet’s Rum back on track and the finalization of the new CD managed to dissuade the band members.

It would have been a shame not to hear the work of a band that has withstood more than a few upheavals. Strengthened by a deeply felt bond and a desire to make good music that has defied fate.

Here are some biographical notes to better understand how the band was born and developed. The two founding members, Marko and Nikola Pejakovic, are brothers originally from the former Yugoslavia. They must have inherited their passion for music from their father, a well-known jazz musician. The Pejakovic brothers formed the band back in the 1980s, with Marko serving as the primary songwriter and guitarist Peter Kopf intent on transforming his ideas into actual songs. This team would release the 1998 album Grace. Yogi Lang (the singer of RPWL) handled the mixing, lending his unique musical vision and production skills. It goes without saying that his contribution to the new CD Lost in the Beauty is also significant, as is his artistic and production contribution. 

The name Marc Turiaux, one of the most talented and respected drummers on the German, if not European, prog scene, was recommended by a colleague, and after a couple of meetings to get to know each other better, the musician joined the project. It’s worth noting that Marc is the drummer for RPWL, practically the most acclaimed prog/art rock band in Germany. A Poet’s Drum has been performing live at the most prestigious venues on the alternative rock scene in Munich, Germany, with his new songs.

Things were starting to look up when, for family and health reasons, guitarist Peter was forced to leave the band. His replacement was Wolfgang Bäumer, certainly not a new face, but a friend of the members of Marko and Nikola, with whom he had played over forty years ago. With Peter’s addition and Marc’s distinctive drumming, the road seems clear for A Poet’s Drum, and the countdown to the highly anticipated new album, Lost in the Beauty, has begun. We’re betting it’s a high-quality effort.

Do you think that being good friends from your childhood has made your musicianship stronger, or were there also negative points in it?
I think, when you play with friends, your are more open for critics and new points of view, which makes you grow better and easier. There were no negative points, because every rehearsal, even if there were different opinions and discussions, we had so much fun and enjoyment.

You are about to release your new cd, which is the second one after Grace, who was out in 1998. How much do you believe your music has changed since your debut album?
Not too much, maybe the sound is partly more modern, a bit harder and some Lyrics and Songs are darker. The main difference to Grace, are, instead of programmed drums, now live recorded drums, by our drummer Marc Turiaux. Also the media has changed, “Lost in the Beauty” will be released on double vinyl instead of CD.

It seems that singer and producer Yogi Lang from RPWL was involved in this musical project since the beginning. What did it bring him to work again with the band for this new album?
Yogi is a great guy and we know him from our teenage years. He helped us out whenever needed, with equipment, suggestions for recording, with some musical advise, and last, but not least, made the album sound great. 

How much of his experience with RPWL (and other releases) do you think Yogi Lang has brought to this new release?
Yogi is a great producer and he knows what is possible to bring on a sound media and what not. He partly had influence on the sound, by coordinating frequencies and instruments, but not on our music and our songs. We came to his studio with all our recorded tracks and Yogi placed them in the virtual hearing room and made them sound perfect for the vinyl release.

For some years the band stopped its career due to health problems of the members and their families but you never stopped believing in this project. Why did you think this was the right time to release a new record? 

The main reason for recording an album was, that we wanted to end the long term suffering from the mentioned issues and to archive our favourite songs on vinyl. At first we planned only 8-10 Songs, but in the last 2 years I wrote so much material, that out of four finished songs there are now 17 on the album.

What are the best elements in your music and how would you define it using a few words?

That`’s hard to say, but I think, that the melodies and some elements of folk (also from the Balkans) mixed with rock of all kinds of genres are defining our music. The precise work of the instrumentalists and vocalists in the band and their way of interpreting the songs, create the unmistakable Poet`s sound. 

Marc Turiaux joined the band in 1999/2000 and played some live concerts. Then the band stopped and he came back recently. Then the guitar player was replaced too. What new elements do you think these changes in the line-up have brought to the music of the band? 

Marc Turiaux immediately brought in his profession as a musician. He brought us to a higher level of understanding as to what is possible. Wolfgang Bäumer on guitars had a totally new approach to our songs and brought in his top level skills and helped us to let the album grow with him. Peter Kopf, who was replaced because of health issues, was Thank God able to play guitars on two Songs of the album and that meant a lot to us.

Are you planning a tour to present your new songs?

At the moment we have planned only one concert for the album release  on the 13^Th of May in Unterschleissheim at the Gleis 1. We are planning for more in autumn and winter of 2026.
