Genesis: come l’Italia scoprì la storica band prima del resto del mondo – It./English Version

L’Italia ha accolto i Genesis come superstar all’inizio degli anni ’70, mentre la band era ancora un gruppo di culto in difficoltà nel loro paese d’origine, l’Inghilterra. Il loro album di svolta, Nursery Cryme (1971), non entrò in classifica nel Regno Unito fino al 1974. Mentre raggiunse il quarto posto nelle classifiche italiane poco dopo la sua uscita.

Quando la band arrivò per il suo primo tour italiano di 12 date nell’aprile del 1972, viaggiava su un furgone guasto e rimase scioccata nello scoprire di suonare in teatri gremiti ed entusiasti, anziché nei club vuoti che affrontavano in Gran Bretagna.

Il tour toccò diversi importanti centri culturali italiani, dove il culto dei Genesis era esploso per la prima volta. Il profondo legame tra l’Italia e i Genesis fu un fenomeno unico, in cui un pubblico straniero salvò una band che era stata in gran parte ignorata nel suo paese d’origine. Nel 1972 la band viveva essenzialmente due vite parallele: suonava per un pubblico scarso e indifferente nei pub inglesi per pochi spiccioli, mentre veniva acclamata come superstar nei teatri italiani. 

La fotografia di Armando Gallo ha giocato un ruolo fondamentale nella scoperta dei Genesis in Italia, fungendo da principale ponte visivo tra le performance teatrali della band in Gran Bretagna e un pubblico italiano entusiasta. Lavorando come corrispondente da Londra per l’influente rivista musicale italiana Ciao 2001, Gallo iniziò a documentare i Genesis già nel 1970, quando erano praticamente sconosciuti. Il lavoro di Gallo è stato fondamentale. Questo perché ha tradotto la presenza scenica d’avanguardia di Peter Gabriel in un formato statico e di grande impatto per i fan che non li avevano ancora visti dal vivo.

Gallo utilizzava pellicole al tungsteno 160 e tecniche di doppia esposizione per catturare l’atmosfera onirica e primordiale delle performance della band.  In Italia acqua il culto della personalità dei Genesis

I suoi primi piani intimi delle maschere e dei costumi di Gabriel offrivano ai lettori italiani una narrazione visiva che rendeva la complessa musica più accessibile e grandiosa. Come corrispondente da Londra per Ciao 2001, i suoi articoli e le copertine garantivano una costante visibilità alla band in Italia, poiché agiva come un insider fidato che alimentava la Genesis-mania nel paese. Le foto di Gallo contribuirono a creare un vero e proprio culto della personalità attorno alla band. A lui si deve la presentazione di una storia visiva di un periodo all’epoca poco documentato. Assicurando che la leggenda dei Genesis in Italia rimanesse viva per decenni.

Le 12 apparizioni in Italia rappresentarono il punto di svolta decisivo che salvò i Genesis dallo scioglimento. All’epoca, infatti, la band si trovava in difficoltà a causa di un debito di quasi 100.000 dollari e suonava davanti a un pubblico scarso nel Regno Unito.

Il loro travolgente successo in Italia fornì ai Genesis la forza economica e psicologica essenziale per continuare.

Il pubblico italiano non si limitava ad assistere ai concerti. Trattava la band con un livello di riverenza del tutto nuovo per i giovani musicisti. I fan erano silenziosi e rispettosi durante le complesse canzoni in più movimenti. In concerti come quello al Piper Club di Roma (18 aprile 1972), la reazione del pubblico era di puro stupore.

I testimoni descrivono spettatori che si alzavano in piedi in segno di ammirazione durante i momenti più drammatici, come durante i cambi d’abito di Peter Gabriel. 

Il tour toccò teatri e club che divennero dei santuari del movimento prog-rock italiano. Tra i momenti salienti, Adria, il primo concerto in cui la band si rese conto di essere delle star. Mentre l’esibizione al Piper Club di Roma è considerata uno dei concerti più significativi nella storia dei Genesis, Napoli fu l’ultima tappa del tour al Teatro Mediterraneo. Dove la band rimase per scrivere il suo primo grande successo internazionale, Foxtrot. Alla fine, l’Italia salvò i Genesis. Nel 1972 erano profondamente indebitati con la Charisma Records. I diritti d’autore derivanti dalle vendite italiane di Nursery Cryme e i profitti dei 12 concerti sold-out fornirono ai Genesis l’ossigeno necessario per registrare Foxtrot. Senza l’Italia, i Genesis si sarebbero sciolti entro il 1973.

Sebbene l’Inghilterra abbia dato i natali ai Genesis, è stata l’Italia a farli vivere e, in cambio, i Genesis hanno dato all’Italia la scintilla per la sua più grande rivoluzione musicale. Dimostrando che l’arte non conosce confini quando l’anima della musica si fonde con il cuore dell’ascoltatore.

Italy embraced Genesis as superstars in the early 1970’s while the band remained a struggling cult act in their home country of England. Their breakthrough album Nursery Cryme (1971) failed to chart in the U.K. till 1974. While it reached number 4 on the Italian charts shortly after its release. 

When the band arrived for its first 12 date Italian tour in April of 1972, they were traveling in a broken van and were shocked find they were playing to packed, enthusiastic theaters rather then the sparse clubs they faced in Britain.

The tour visited several major Italian cultural centers where the Genesis cult first exploded. A  deep connection between Italy and Genesis that was a unique phenomenon where a foreign audience rescued a band that was largely ignored in its home country.

By 1972 the band was essentially living two parallel lives. Playing to sparse, indifferent crowds in English pubs for pennies, while being mobbed as superstars in Italian theatres. 

Armando Gallo’s photography played a pivotal role in the  discovery of Genesis in Italy, acting as the primary visual bridge between the band’s theatrical British performances and an eager Italian audience. Working as a London correspondent for the influential Italian music magazine Ciao 2001, Gallo began documenting Genesis as early as 1970, when Genesis were virtually unknown. Gallo’s work was essential because it translated Peter Gabriel’s avant-garde stage presence into a static, high impact format for fans who hadn’t yet seen them live. 

Gallo would use 160 tungsten film and double-exposure techniques to capture the raw dreamscape atmosphere of the band’s performances. His intimate close up shots of Gabriel’s masks and costumes provided Italian readers with a visual narrative that made the complex music feel more accessible and grandiose. As the London correspondent for Ciao 2001, Gallo’s regular features and cover stories provided constant exposure for the band in  Italy, as he acted as a trusted insider that spurred Genesis mania in Italy. Gallo’s photos helped build a cult of personality around the band. He is credited with presenting a visual history of a period that was not heavily documented at the time ensuring that the legend of Genesis in Italy remained vivid for decades.

The 12 appearances in Italy served as the definitive  turning point that saved Genesis from dissolving. For at the time they were struggling with being nearly $100,000 in debt. and playing to sparse crowds in the U.K..

Their overwhelming success in Italy provided Genesis the essential economic and psychological strength to continue. Italian audiences didn’t just attend the shows, they treated the band with a level of reverence that was entirely new to the young musicians. The fans were quiet and respectful,during the complex multi  movement songs. At the shows like the Piper Club in Rome (April18,1972) the crowds reaction was pure fascination. Witnesses describe audience members rising in awe during dramatic moments, such as during Peter Gabriel’s costume changes.

The tour would move through theaters and clubs that became shrines to the Italian prog-rock movement. Highlights included Adria, the very first show the band realized they were stars. While the Rome Piper Club  appearance is regarded as one of the most significant shows in Genesis history. Naples was the final stop in the tour at Teatro Mediterraneo where the band stayed to write their first big international hit album Foxtrot. . 

In the end Italy saved Genesis. In 1972 they were deep in debt to Charisma Records. The royalties from the Italian sales of Nursery Cryme and the profits from the 12 sold out dates provided the oxygen Genises needed to record Foxtrot. Without Italy Genesis would of disbanded by 1973. While England brought birth to Genesis, it was Italy that gave them life and in return, Genesis gave Italy the spark for its greatest musical revolution, proving that art knows no borders when the soul of the music matches the heart of the listener.
